Download or read book What You Need to Know to Understand written by Jessica Johnson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I didn’t ever want to care about another human being again. It hurt too much; left me feeling too empty, too worthless. And so I decided for a second time that I was going to try to play the indifferent game. I was too late though . . . By the time I’d decided, I’d already been affected in ways I hadn’t even realized. The virus had taken hold of me, mutating my identity and inner thoughts until they had transformed to almost complete self-abhorrence. It had happened so slowly over the years that I hadn’t even noticed it, and only now, in retrospect, do I realize how much my mind had changed in that time. But for you to really understand, you would have to be able to read my mind.

When she arrives at the Sinclairs' enormous estate on Lake Superior, Julia begins to suspect that there may be sinister undercurrents to her "too-good-to-be-true" position. As Julia delves into the reasons of why Amaris chose to abandon her successful writing career and withdraw from the public eye, her search leads to unsettling connections to her own family tree, making her wonder why she really was invited to Havenwood in the first place, and what monstrous secrets are still held prisoner within its walls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Amy Hill Hearth comes her first historical thriller, inspired by the story of the 1916 Jersey Shore shark. “Sharks are as timid as rabbits,” says a superintendent of the Coast Guard, dismissing the possibility that a shark could be the culprit in an unprecedented fatal attack at the Jersey Shore. It’s July, and swimming in the sea is a popular new pastime, but people up and down the East Coast are shocked and mystified by the swimmer’s death. A prominent surgeon at the shore, Dr. Edwin Halsey is the one who examines the victim, and the only one who believes the perpetrator was a shark—and that it will strike again. With the public and the authorities—and even those who witnessed the attacks—so stubbornly disbelieving, Dr. Halsey finds himself fighting widespread confusion, conspiracy theories, and outright denial. Seeking the input of commercial fisherman, he soon learns they have long been concerned about a creature they call the Beast. The Lenape, one of the tribes native to the area, have their own beliefs about this creature, but can Dr. Halsey convince the rest of the world before it’s too late? The story of the 1916 Jersey Shore shark changed the way Americans think of the seashore, reminding us once again that nature plays by its own rules.

Book excerpt: People who have been damaged, thrown away, marginalized, or traumatized are more capable of apprehending social patterns, precisely because they’ve needed to be aware and vigilant about how the world works. For too long, those who rely on long-held rights and entitlement have claimed that others are biased about the very topics on which they have expertise. Damaged Like Me is a series of essays and stories that reveal a complex social landscape. It shows how possible and vital it is to build roads to a more equitable and loving collective culture that includes body sovereignty, racial justice, gender equity/liberation, and much more. It does so by relying on the insights and approaches to knowledge production of those on the receiving end of inequity and violence, those whose “objectivity” on issues of oppression has been consistently maligned despite their having the most to teach us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What iflike it is said in the Biblewe were supposed to live forever? But Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and somehow, our bodies changed, giving us a limited life span. We all know Adam lived 936 years, and as each generation came about, our life span kept getting shorter until we got to the present day, only living to about 75 to 100 years if we were lucky. Science knows that almost every animal on this planet has all the amino acids needed in its liver to constantly make vitamin C to keep them healthy. Some time ago, we lost that ability because we were getting enough vitamin C in our diets, so our liver quit making it. This is just an example of how our bodies once again turned something off, which has become detrimental to our health. But what if somewhere down the line, that switch turned on again, and what if that peculiar switch was our ability to live forever again? This brings me to my story. He was born sometime in the late 1800s. Growing up normal, he didnt realize how special he was until he got a clue while fighting in World War I. A soldier was dying and needing blood to possibly save his life. So he gave his blood to help him. The doctor told the dying soldier that if he lived, he still would not have the use of his right arm again. It was just too damaged. Several days later, the soldier not only regained the use of his right arm but also healed much quicker than any of the doctors thought. They viewed it as a miracle. This disturbed our main character because he felt something was weird about himself. He couldnt put his finger on it, but he knew something was not right. So he kept to himself after the war. One day, he looked in the mirror and noticed something. He knew he was in his forties, but he didnt look a day over twenty. As time went on, he became more protective of disclosing his age and changing his identity to reflect an age much more suitable to his looks. By the end of the Korean War, the government was looking for him, so he changed his identity often and moved around a lot. This brings us to Phoenix, Arizona, where a freak accident brought our hero to his end. And that is where the story begins. Not knowing who our hero is and how he will change the lives of so many people is a miracle in itself, but the stories that follow are just as miraculous as the people who received his organs.
