Download or read book You ll Never Make a Hairdresser written by Russell Paul Hughes and published by Chipmunkapublishing ltd. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description'You'll never make a hairdresser' is an autobiography detailing the life of a young boy living on a deprived housing estate in Manchester and tracing his progression to the present day and the realisation of his dreams. The novel includes many humorous experiences; the loss of his virginity to a wheelchair bound client, mobile hairdressing within the housing estate representing the culture and lifestyle of all involved, down to the very poignant moments on the loss of a dearly loved sister to cancer at the age of just 37. The novel also explores the innermost thoughts and feeling of the author, not only his depression which resulted from the onset of epilepsy at the age of thirty but also on a deeply personal level when he realised that as a heterosexual husband and father he was living a lie. Following these revelations he embarks on a journey of discovery which finally leads him to the confident and fulfilled gay businessman he is today. About the AuthorRussell was born in 1966 and raised in Wythenshawe, South Manchester. Russell's hairdressing career began in the early 1980's but his dream of becoming a hairdresser began much earlier when he first visited a salon in Manchester at the age of 13. Never losing sight of his dream Russell broke away from the tradition of locally based factory work and began a journey of training and apprenticeships in salons throughout Manchester. By 21 Russell had opened his own salon 'The Crop Shop' in Hale, Cheshire and was finally realising the dream he had held onto throughout his youth. Russell moved to North Wales with his wife and children but continued to base his work in the vibrant city of Manchester where the hair industry and business opportunities were rapidly developing; and where he was able to maintain close family connections with his older siblings. In 1997 Russell was struck by tragedy when his dear sister Allyson died. His loss of the person he describes as 'a mother figure' left him so bereft that his life spiralled into turmoil. As severe depression and epilepsy took hold of him, Russell spent long periods of time hospitalised whilst everything which he had built in ruins. The illness he experienced would be life changing and lead to him losing everything that his life was built on; the last foundation being his marriage when Russell confronted his sexuality and openly admitted that as a heterosexual husband and father he was living a lie. A long and lonely period of recovery followed during which Russell struggled to not only build his own emotional and physical strength but to find a way back into the hairdressing industry and to re-establish himself as a successful business man. Russell remained based in North Wales throughout this difficult time undertaking a number of jobs in order to become self sufficient again. The salons and customers which have shaped Russell's hairdressing career span a period of almost 30 years and form the backdrop to his book, in which customer encounters are intertwined with the personal hurdles Russell overcome with bereavement, sexuality, depression, epilepsy and dyslexia; but throughout these challenging times Russell kept hold of his dream and his humour, and with the ability to reminisce in such a poised, yet entertaining way has enabled the creation of his first novel 'You'll Never Make A Hairdresser'. Russell now runs his own salon 'Russell Paul Hairdressing' based in Prestatyn, North Wales where he lives with his civil partner Jonathan.

Download or read book Fire Up Your Metabolism written by Lyssie Lakatos and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I can't loose weight because I have a terrible metabolism" You may not realize it, but you can take control of your metabolism. Identical twins and registered dietitians, Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames embarked on a twin study to determine precisely what does -- and doesn't -- increase the rate at which our bodies burn calories and fat. Their findings? Small changes have big results. The nine weight-loss principles -- and the 200 tips that help you incorporate them into your lifestyle -- in Fire Up Your Metabolism are surprisingly simple: Eat breakfast before you get to work. Learn which sugary snacks trump others (peanut M&Ms boost metabolism, but Twizzlers don't). Drink water, which is essential to burning calories. Always eat dinner, even if it's late. Focus on muscle building, not cardiovascular workouts. With Fire Up Your Metabolism, you won't have to avoid restaurants or follow a diet (though one is included if you like regimentation). The fatigue and distracting hunger that derail most dieters won't affect you because revving your metabolism is all about eating. You will enjoy breads and other carbohydrates. You will boost your metabolism with power proteins, including hamburgers, and avoid other proteins that bog you down. You will indulge in snacks you thought a dieter could never touch. Lyssie and Tammy's clients have experienced not only dramatic weight loss but also the thrill of having more energy than ever before. Now you, too, can rewire your metabolism to lose weight fast and forever.

Her daughter has dyed her hair purple. And for her thirty-fifth birthday, her sisters have arranged a weekend getaway--complete with makeover and limo. It's all Maggy can do to hold on to the pieces of her life right now. And traveling all the way to Atlantic City, she thinks, will only make things worse. Conor Riley is in Atlantic City that same day--and his only plans are to roll some dice and keep his mind off the past. He can't help noticing the beautiful woman across the room, sitting alone. He can't help but ask her to dance. And he can't help but ask her to come with him to a romantic escape by the shore--and to think about what their future together could hold. One voice tells Maggy to stick with what she knows: car pools and groceries and going it alone. And then there is the other voice--the one that tells her to take a chance, and say yes...

Download or read book Nothing Like a Dame written by Eddie Shapiro and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nothing Like a Dame, theater journalist Eddie Shapiro opens a jewelry box full of glittering surprises, through in-depth conversations with twenty leading women of Broadway. He carefully selected Tony Award-winning stars who have spent the majority of their careers in theater, leaving aside those who have moved on or occasionally drop back in. The women he interviewed spent endless hours with him, discussing their careers, offering insights into the iconic shows, changes on Broadway over the last century, and the art (and thrill) of taking the stage night after night. Chita Rivera describes the experience of starring in musicals in each of the last seven decades; Audra McDonald gives her thoughts on the work that went into the five Tony Awards she won before turning forty-one; and Carol Channing reflects on how she has revisited the same starring role generation after generation, and its effects on her career. Here too is Sutton Foster, who contemplates her breakout success in an age when stars working predominately in theater are increasingly rare. Each of these conversations is guided by Shapiro's expert knowledge of these women's careers, Broadway lore, and the details of famous (and infamous) musicals. He also includes dozens of photographs of these players in their best-known roles. This fascinating collection reveals the artistic genius and human experience of the women who have made Broadway musicals more popular than ever-a must for anyone who loves the theater.
