Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American documentarian travels a haunted highway across the frozen tundra of Siberia in New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden’s Road of Bones, a “tightly wound, atmospheric, and creepy as hell” (Stephen King) supernatural thriller. Surrounded by barren trees in a snow-covered wilderness with a dim, dusky sky forever overhead, Siberia’s Kolyma Highway is 1200 miles of gravel packed permafrost within driving distance of the Arctic Circle. A narrow path where drivers face such challenging conditions as icy surfaces, limited visibility, and an average temperature of sixty degrees below zero, fatal car accidents are common. But motorists are not the only victims of the highway. Known as the Road of Bones, it is a massive graveyard for the former Soviet Union’s gulag prisoners. Hundreds of thousands of people worked to death and left where their bodies fell, consumed by the frozen elements and plowed beneath the permafrost road. Fascinated by the history, documentary producer Felix “Teig” Teigland is in Russia to drive the highway, envisioning a new series capturing Life and Death on the Road of Bones with a ride to the town of Akhust, “the coldest place on Earth”, collecting ghost stories and local legends along the way. Only, when Teig and his team reach their destination, they find an abandoned town, save one catatonic nine-year-old girl—and a pack of predatory wolves, faster and smarter than any wild animals should be. Pursued by the otherworldly beasts, Teig’s companions confront even more uncanny and inexplicable phenomena along the Road of Bones, as if the ghosts of Stalin’s victims were haunting them. It is a harrowing journey that will push Teig beyond endurance and force him to confront the sins of his past.

Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Investigator team of Matt Diamond and Natasha Cutter had returned to their new offi ce in Beverly Hills California and were going over a large list of potential clients when one caught their eye. They had received a call from Ms. Gloria Goldstein regarding the murder of her parents and the theft of a large twenty-carat light pink diamond from their jewelry store. The police had been of little help and she was most anxious for them to investigate the tragedy. Although the event began in Beverly Hills, the location changed quickly to Johannesburg South Africa and meant that the globe traveling team would once more return to the same country where they had been in their previous case. The hunt for the theft of the diamond and the murder of Benjamin and Rebecca Goldstein had to begin at the original source, the antique studio of Martin Clause in Johannesburg. He was the fi rst one to purchase, what he later called The Empress diamond, from a local black man, for $500,000 and sold it to the Goldsteins for a solid $1,000,000 a few days later. The Empress was the largest light pink diamond ever found in the world and was a chance fi ne in Tanzania. Although vastly under-priced and could be worth millions more, the only place it could demand its real value was in the United States and the Goldsteins were the way to get it to the American market. Entering into the theft and murders were three former American Special Forces veterans and their mission was the pursuit of the Empress. At the same time, there was a sinister fi gure behind all of this with a code name of THE RED FOX that would pay any cost to obtain the Empress. His interest in the Empress was to obtain it for a billionaire, Sir Fredrick Marsh, who wanted it as a birthday gift for his wife. It was now up to Matt Diamond and Natasha Cutter to follow the trail of the Deadly Diamond. A trail that would include the deaths of several others and a diamond that many would believe was cursed. The intrigue of who has it now is an exciting trip and the surprise ending will get the reader out of his seat with the strange twist of faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of L.A. Weather comes “a whimsical, humorous, and passionate mystery that explores the love and hurt of a father and daughter on the run” (Jorge Ramos, News Anchor for Univision). “1,001 nights in a Mexicali women’s prison . . . González and Daughter Trucking Co. is about our compulsion to make events into stories and stories into bridges of understanding.”—John Sayles, Screenwriter and Director Serving a sentence in a prison in Mexico, Libertad González finds a clever way to pass the time with the weekly Library Club, reading to her fellow inmates from whatever books she can find in the prison’s meager supply. The story that emerges, though, has nothing to do with the words printed on the pages. She tells of a former literature professor and fugitive of the Mexican government who reinvents himself as a trucker in the United States. There he falls in love with a wild woman with whom he shares his truck and his life—that is until Joaquín González unexpectedly finds himself alone on the road with a baby girl and González & Daughter Trucking Co. is born. Joaquín and his daughter make the cab of an 18-wheeler their home, sharing everything—adventures, books, truck-stop chow, and memories of the girl’s mother—until one day the girl grows into a woman, and a chance encounter with one man causes her to rebel against another. With her stories, Libertad enthralls a group of female prisoners every bit as eccentric as the tales she tells. In González and Daughter Trucking Co., bestselling author María Amparo Escandón seamlessly blends together these elements into one compelling and unexpected conclusion that will have you cheering for Libertad and filled with joy.
