Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling novelist Rob Pobi comes Mannheim Rex, an homage to the blockbuster Jaws and the classic American novel Moby Dick. After the sudden death of his wife, famous horror writer Gavin Corlie retreats from New York City to a secluded house on Lake Caldasac. But his new life in the country is far from idyllic, and when a thirteen-year-old wheelchair-bound boy named Finn Horn nearly drowns in the lake, Gavin discovers a startling secret: people in this peaceful lakeside community keep vanishing. Is the corrupt, drug-fuelled town sheriff to blame? Or is Finn’s account of a lake-dwelling leviathan more than a near-death hallucination? Racing against time and Mother Nature, Gavin and Finn embark on a quest to catch a nightmare beast. It’s survival of the fittest, and it isn’t long before the pair realizes that they might be out of their depth…and that the hunters may have become the hunted. An homage to Peter Benchley’s Jaws and the classic Moby Dick, Mannheim Rex is an unsettling thriller that switches seamlessly between heartwarming friendship and heart-stopping action.

Over time, they improved the Wings, from flying idiots to a productive serving class. But there are some places that feathered appendages just wont fit. The humans who handle these less-than-pleasant tasks are provided extra assistance and special privileges to make up for such work. Pete is just a boy, but hes quick and agile and can get into all of those tight spaces to help his father maintain the sewers, but he could do without the older apprentices hazing. Left in the dark, filthy tunnels by his fathers apprentice, Pete is rescued by Jared, a unique descendant of both human and Wing. This chance intervention sets Pete, Jared, and their friends on a path that will eventually bring the true problem of the settlement to light.

Download or read book Fear and Self Loathing in the City written by Michael Sinclair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear and Self-Loathing in the City is a practical guide to both managing the pressures of the workplace and coping with the struggles we may have in our personal lives. It incorporates simple techniques and quick solutions to many stressful work-related issues that exist in most working cultures. This book is crucial for today's workplace. The current state of the economy, financial disasters and general instability is having a massive affect on employees. Workers have to deal with redundancies and the pressures of finding new jobs; the number of sick days is on the rise; drug use and alcoholism is increasing; and depression and anxiety are becoming more and more common. Although more people are seeking help, there is still a stigma in the workplace about depression, anxiety, and other very real mental illnesses. As a result, many employees suffer in silence for fear their contemporaries will find out they are not coping, see it as a sign of weakness and think badly of them.

Download or read book Interpreting and Translation Services and the Applied Language Solutions Contract written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Justice Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that the MoJ did not have a sufficient understanding of the complexities of court interpreting work. Significant concern was revealed that quality standards could be diminished by the imposition of a tiered system to enable a wider pool of interpreters, and by the introduction of lower levels of pay. However, the Department pushed ahead with the contract and failed to properly anticipate or address the potential for problems with Applied Language Solutions' (ALS) capacity to deliver on its promises. ALS, and more recently Capita, has been unable to recruit qualified and experienced interpreters in sufficient numbers. Professional interpreters have largely boycotted the new arrangements and Capita-ALS clearly needed significantly more resources than it had at its disposal. It also only paid lip service to the regulatory duties accepted under the Framework Agreement, yet did not have the capacity to cope with complaints or to implement basic vetting procedures. The MoJ has had to monitor Capita-ALS very closely to secure the level of improvement necessary to make the Agreement workable, and continues to do so. The existing arrangements may not be financially sustainable as Capita is propping up the continuation of the Agreement, which mean that the Department's savings, originally projected to be £15million, are effectively being secured at the company's expense. Actions taken by MoJ also had the effect of hampering the inquiry when HMCTS issued an edict to its staff instructing them not to participate in the Committee's online consultation, established to invite direct observations from frontline staff of the performance of ALS
