Book All Things Cease to Appear

Download or read book All Things Cease to Appear written by Elizabeth Brundage and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This literary thriller's complex narrative involves a cursed house, an unsolved murder and impeccable writing.” —The New York Times Book Review • The basis for the Netflix film Things Heard and Seen Recent transplants to the small town of Chosen, New York, the Clares have not received the warmest welcome; once a thriving dairy farm, their home is haunted by the tragedy that left the former owner’s three sons orphaned and adrift. Late one winter afternoon, professor George Clare knocks on his neighbor’s door with terrible news: he returned from work to find his wife, Catherine, murdered in their bed. Someone took an ax to her head while their three-year-old daughter, Franny, played alone in her room across the hall. As one dark secret peels away to reveal others—and as the Clare marriage reveals itself to have a sinister darkness that rivals the farm’s history—Elizabeth Brundage offers a rich and complex portrait of the scars that can haunt a community for generations and the dark longings inside each and every one of us that drive us to do inexplicable things.

Book Pink Floyd and Philosophy

Download or read book Pink Floyd and Philosophy written by George A. Reisch and published by Open Court. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their early experiments in psychedelic rock music in the 1960s, and their epic recordings of the 1970s and '80s, Pink Floyd became one of the most influential and recognizable rock bands in history. As "The Pink Floyd Sound," the band created sound and light shows that defined psychedelia in England and inspired similar movements in the Jefferson Airplane's San Francisco and Andy Warhol's New York City. The band's subsequent recordings forged rock music's connections to orchestral music, literature, and philosophy. "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" ignored pop music's ordinary topics to focus on themes such as madness, existential despair, brutality, alienation, and socially induced psychosis. They also became some of the best-selling recordings of all time. In this collection of essays, sixteen scholars expert in various branches of philosophy set the controls for the heart of the sun to critically examine the themes, concepts, and problems—usually encountered in the pages of Heidegger, Foucault, Sartre, or Orwell—that animate and inspire Pink Floyd's music. These include the meaning of existence, the individual's place in society, the interactions of knowledge and power in education, the contradictions of art and commerce, and the blurry line—the tragic line, in the case of Floyd early member Syd Barrett (died in 2006)—between genius and madness. Having dominated pop music for nearly four decades, Pink Floyd's dynamic and controversial history additionally opens the way for these authors to explore controversies about intellectual property, the nature of authorship, and whether wholes—especially in the case of rock bands—are more than the sums of their parts.

Book The Last Thing You Surrender

Download or read book The Last Thing You Surrender written by Leonard Pitts and published by Agate Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Americans in the Jim Crow South face enormous changed triggered by World War II in this epic novel by the Pulitzer-winning author of Freeman. Could you find the courage to do what’s right in a world on fire? An affluent white marine survives Pearl Harbor at the cost of a black messman’s life only to be sent, wracked with guilt, to the Pacific and taken prisoner by the Japanese. A young black woman, widowed by the same events at Pearl Harbor, finds unexpected opportunity and a dangerous friendship in a segregated Alabama shipyard feeding the war. Meanwhile, a black man, who as a child saw his parents brutally lynched, is conscripted to fight Nazis for a country he despises and discovers a new kind of patriotism in the all-black 761st Tank Battalion . . . Set against a backdrop of violent racial conflict on both the front lines and the home front, The Last Thing You Surrender explores the powerful moral struggles of individuals from a divided nation. What does it take to change someone’s mind about race? What does it take for a country and a people to move forward, transformed? Praise for The Last Thing You Surrender “A story of our nation at war, with itself as well as tyranny across the globe. It’s an American tapestry of hatred, compassion, fear, courage, and cruelties, leavened with the promise of triumph. A powerful story I will not soon forget.” —James R. Benn, author of the Billy Boyle WWII mysteries “Seamlessly integrates impressive research into a compelling tale of America at war—overseas, at home, and within ourselves, as we struggle to find the better angels of our nature. Pitts poignantly illustrates ongoing racial and class tensions, and offers hope that we can overcome hatred by refusing to sacrifice dignity.” —Booklist, starred review

No matter how she tries to stop it, she’s pulled from her safe bed night after night, haunted by her own family history and legacy. Now, the truth feels unavoidable: it’s only a matter of time before she loses her mind and the swamp becomes her grave. Unless she can figure out how to break the curse. Book excerpt: THE planter alighted from the dusty-little train under the crumbling brick car-shed at Darley, and, turning his heavy hand-luggage over to the negro porter, he walked across the grass to the steps of the Johnston House. Here he was met by Jim Thornton, the dapper young clerk, who always had a curled mustache and oiled hair smoothed flatly down over his brow. "Oh, here you are, right side up, Captain Duncan!" he cried, cordially. "You can't stay away from those level acres of yours very long at a time." "No, Jim," the short, thick-set man smiled, as he took the extended hand; "as soon as I heard spring had opened, I got a bad case of homesickness, and we left Florida. My wife and daughter came a week ago. I had to stop on business in Jacksonville. I always like to be here in planting season; my men never seem to know exactly what I want done when I am away. Jim, I've got a lot of fine land out there between the river and the mountains."

Book God Is Busy Fixing Things

Download or read book God Is Busy Fixing Things written by Pastor Jim Walter and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Is Busy Fixing Things How do I know this? I've been one of his co-workers for more than fifty years. I've been one with Him in building His church. I've been one with Him in making disciples. I've been one with Him in building homes. I've been one with Him in uniting brothers and sisters in Christ. I've been one with Him in restoring sinning brothers, and rebuilding shattered relationships. Summing everything together, I have been and still am one with Him fixing that which got broke in Genesis three. Namely, His crowning creation; (mankind, you and me) Only He can fix us. He fixes us one at a time. He always does His fixing in a vital way, through His Living Word by His Spirit. As one of His co-workers my part is to prayerfully use His tools (His Word, His Cross, His Gifts) in total dependence upon His Spirit to fix people on the inside. When He does and continues to do His work of fixing (regenerating and sanctifying) broken people, I get my reward in seeing transformed lives and homes like you will read about in this book. As He imparts life to the dead and they continue to grow: The proud become humble. The covetous become generous. The angry become meek. The bitter become sweet. The divided become united. The Self-centered become God-centered. Pastor Jim Walter is a graduate of Practical Bible Training School, now Davis College, Binghamton, NY where he continues to serve on the school's Trustee Board. He has pastored four churches. His last twenty seven years before retiring were at South Apalachin Baptist Church, Apalachin, NY, the church that ordained him in 1954. He is still actively speaking and teaching God's Word, and also writing.
