Download or read book Impersonations written by Sheryl N. Hamilton and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personhood is considered at once a sign of legal-political status and of socio-cultural agency, synonymous with the rational individual, subject, or citizen. Yet, in an era of life-extending technologies, genetic engineering, corporate social responsibility, and smart technology, the definition of the person is neither benign nor uncontested. Boundaries that previously worked to secure our place in the social order are blurring as never before. What does it mean, then, to be a person in the twenty-first century? In Impersonations, Sheryl N. Hamilton uses five different kinds of persons - corporations, women, clones, computers, and celebrities - to discuss the instability of the concept of personhood and to examine some of the ways in which broader social anxieties are expressed in these case studies. She suggests that our investment in personhood is greater now than it has been for years, and that our ongoing struggle to define the term is evident in law and popular culture. Using a cultural studies of law approach, the author examines important issues such as whether the person is a gender-neutral concept based on individual rights, the relationship between personhood and the body, and whether persons can be property. Impersonations is a highly original study that brings together legal, philosophical, and cultural expressions of personhood to enliven current debates about our place in the world.

Book excerpt: A collection of the great writer's observations, made during his travels across the Europe he loved so much When I am on a journey, all ties suddenly fall away. I feel myself quite unburdened, disconnected, free - There is something in it marvellously uplifting and invigorating. Whole past epochs suddenly return: nothing is lost, everything still full of inception, enticement. For the insatiably curious and ardent Europhile Stefan Zweig, travel was both a necessary cultural education and a personal balm for the depression he experienced when rooted in one place for too long. He spent much of his life weaving between the countries of Europe, visiting authors and friends, exploring the continent in the heyday of international rail travel. Comprising a lifetime's observations on Zweig's travels in Europe, this collection can be dipped into or savoured at length, and paints a rich and sensitive picture of Europe before the Second World War.

The world soon found out exactly who she was, as her career went on a rollercoaster ride through classic British television series such as Minder, To the Manor Born, The Detectives, Doctor Who, Casualty, Space: 1999 and, of course, Coronation Street. This came alongside a distinguished stage career, with stellar performances in The Vagina Monologues and Calendar Girls. But her success has often been tempered with heartache. The fanfare surrounding her celebrity marriage to Dennis Waterman quickly faded amid accusations of alcoholism and spousal abuse. And then there was her surreal stint on Celebrity Big Brother, which she calls 'sixteen days of madness' - Now older and wiser, and elevated to the status of national treasure, Rula Lenska is ready to share her unbelievable story in full. And while we've all watched her life from the outside, no one has heard or seen Rula like this - unabashed, honest and thrilling.
