Download or read book THE MAR THOMA STORY written by John Thomas and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic of the apostle St. Thomas is reported in this treatise. The traditional tale tells an unacceptable story without credibility and relevance to the reality of how Jesus and His apostles preached—to whom, when, where and why hearers left their earlier faith to become the first believers in the faith, which has since come to be known as Christianity in spite of all the resistance, persecutions and tortures these believers had to endure, suffer and die cruel deaths for. Then there are the enduring unassailable facts—a people on the west Malabar coast of Peninsular India, the Syrian Christians, claiming from the very beginning of their existence of having been Christianised only by the testimony and witness of the apostle to their ancestors, and a tomb on the east Coromandel Coast of peninsular India at Mylapore, forlorn and without any local devotees (until the coming of the Portuguese), that has always been known and claimed to be the only burial place of the apostle. Then it has to be critically evaluated, why among the apostles, St. Thomas alone travelled about 7000 km east and south of Palestine (in a direction away from the travels and mission of all other apostles), traversing desert and ocean to preach only to two similar communities at two seaports at Muziris and Mylapore on either side of peninsular India. This is the enigmatic and perplexing matter thoroughly researched, analysed, evaluated and reported in this book and treatise. The book finally arrives at the factors that led to the success of the apostle’s mission at the seaport of Muziris.

This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebration of the Holy Qurbana is the central and focal point of the faith life of the Holy Church. Holy Qurbana contains the whole spiritual wealth of the Church. The translation and revision of the Eucharistic liturgy is the basic visible expression of reformation in the Malankara Church. The formation and development of the Eucharistic liturgies in the churches has distinct story and relevance to share. The churches in Malankara also have their own unique trajectory of the development and existence of the Eucharistic Liturgy. In this book, the writer attempts to put forth the historical development of the Eucharistic Liturgy in the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church. The writer has examined the historical evolution and the developmental process of the Eucharistic liturgy of the church, which is a revised version of the liturgy of St. James. This book depicts a new set of reflections on the history of liturgy and worship in the Malanakara Mar Thoma Syrian Church. The study helps us to identify the historical roots and ecclesiastical relationship in the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church through the readings of the liturgical formations.

Download or read book Ethnic Church Meets Megachurch written by Prema A. Kurien and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes the profound impact American evangelicalism is having on the religious lives of contemporary Christian immigrants, and the pressures immigrant churches face to incorporate evangelical worship styles, often at the expense of maintaining their ethnic character and support systems. Most interestingly, it shows that the integration patterns of post-1965 Christian immigrants and their descendants have essentially reversed earlier models. While immigrants from Europe and their children were expected to shed their ethnic identities to become Americans, in the sphere of religion, they could maintain their ethnic traditions within American denominations. This book shows that members of the contemporary second generation are incorporating into U.S. society by maintaining their ethnic identities in secular contexts but are adopting a de-ethnicized religious identity and practice. In particular, many are gravitating toward evangelical megachurches. Drawing on multi-site research in the U.S. and India, this book also provides a global perspective on religion, demonstrating the variety of ways in which transnational processes affect religious organizations and their members, and how forces of globalization, from the period of colonialism to contemporary out-migration, have brought tremendous changes among Christian communities in the Global South. Download or read book Christian Pluralism in the United States written by Raymond Brady Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-13 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent immigrant Christians from India are changing the face of American Christianity. They are establishing churches with Orthodox, Protestant and Catholic rites. This book is a comprehensive study of these Christians, their churches and their adaptation. Professor Williams describes migration patterns since 1965, and how the role of Indian Christian nurses in creating immigration opportunities for their families affects gender relations, transition of generations, interpretations of migration, Indian Christian family values, and types of leadership. Contemporary mobility and rapid communication create new transnational religious groups, and Williams reveals some of the reverse effects on churches and institutions in India. He notes some successes and failures of mediating institutions in the United States in responding to new forms of Christianity brought by immigrants.
Download or read book The Clash of Heavens written by Bovas Abraham and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the topic of religion so contentious? Since childhood, everywhere he goes, Chacko sees a “clash of heavens” between people of different religions. He was brought up in the Christian Mar Thoma Church in a small village in India in the 1940s and has practised Christianity throughout his life. However, as he travels around the world, from India to Canada via Ghana, and witnesses political transitions and coups, acts of terrorism and war, and learns more about various religions, he is drawn into deep discussions with friends about belief, the Bible, and God. Was Jesus really a historical figure? Why are there different versions of the creation story? How does Darwin’s Theory of Evolution fit in? Why is God referred to as “Father,” and not “Mother” or “Sister”? Who is God? Along his journey of discovery and truth, Chacko meets “angels” from all walks of life who contribute to his outlook on humanity—but also bring him to question himself even more. Will his quest ever end? The Clash of Heavens: A Journey of Discovery with Angels explores the spiritual conflicts that can both disconnect and connect us from each other, the courage it takes to question the beliefs you’ve been taught in order to find your own truth, and how religion has shaped the world, from practices and folklore to beliefs and actions.
Download or read book A History of Christianity in Asia Vol II written by Samuel Hugh Moffett and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the history of Christianity in the East is not as well known. The seed was the same: the good news of Jesus Christ for the whole world, which Christians call "the gospel." But it was sown by different sowers; it was planted in different soil; it grew with a different flavor; and it was gathered by different reapers. It is too often forgotten that the faith moved east across Asia as early as it moved west into Europe. Western church history tends to follow Paul to Philippi and to Rome and on across Europe to the conversion of Constantine and the barbarians. With some outstanding exceptions, only intermittently has the West looked beyond Constantinople as its center. It was a Christianity that has for centuries remained unashamedly Asian. A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission, it is stimulating for all readers interested in Christian history. --
