Book Career and Family

Download or read book Career and Family written by Claudia Goldin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author builds on decades of complex research to examine the gender pay gap and the unequal distribution of labor between couples in the home. The author argues that although public and private discourse has brought these concerns to light, the actions taken - such as a single company slapped on the wrist or a few progressive leaders going on paternity leave - are the economic equivalent of tossing a band-aid to someone with cancer. These solutions, the author writes, treat the symptoms and not the disease of gender inequality in the workplace and economy. Here, the author points to data that reveals how the pay gap widens further down the line in women's careers, about 10 to 15 years out, as opposed to those beginning careers after college. She examines five distinct groups of women over the course of the twentieth century: cohorts of women who differ in terms of career, job, marriage, and children, in approximated years of graduation - 1900s, 1920s, 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s - based on various demographic, labor force, and occupational outcomes. The book argues that our entire economy is trapped in an old way of doing business; work structures have not adapted as more women enter the workforce. Gender equality in pay and equity in home and childcare labor are flip sides of the same issue, and the author frames both in the context of a serious empirical exploration that has not yet been put in a long-run historical context. This book offers a deep look into census data, rich information about individual college graduates over their lifetimes, and various records and sources of material to offer a new model to restructure the home and school systems that contribute to the gender pay gap and the quest for both family and career. --

Book The Answer Is in the Problem

Download or read book The Answer Is in the Problem written by J Krishnamurti and published by Krishnamurti Foundation America. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these Talks, given in Europe, Ojai and India, Krishnamurti addresses the need to approach our life problems in a manner does not perpetuate fragmentation. "Though we have many problems, and each problem seems to produce so many other problems, perhaps we can consider together whether the wisest thing to do is, not to seek the solution of any problem at all. It seems to me that our minds are incapable of dealing with life as a whole; we deal, apparently, with all problems fragmentarily, separately, not with an integrated outlook. Perhaps the first thing, if we have problems, is not to seek an immediate solution for them, but to have the patience to inquire deeply into them, and discover whether these problems can ever be solved by the exercise of will. What is important, I think, is to find out, not how to solve the problem, but how to approach it." An extensive compendium of Krishnamurti's talks and discussions in the USA, Europe, India, New Zealand, and South Africa from 1933 to 1967—the Collected Works have been carefully authenticated against existing transcripts and tapes. Each volume includes a frontispiece photograph of Krishnamurti , with question and subject indexes at the end. The content of each volume is not limited to the subject of the title, but rather offers a unique view of Krishnamurti's extraordinary teachings in selected years. The Collected Works offers the reader the opportunity to explore the early writings and dialogues in their most complete and authentic form.

Book Age of Greed

Download or read book Age of Greed written by Jeff Madrick and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid history of the economics of greed told through the stories of those major figures primarily responsible. Age of Greed shows how the single-minded and selfish pursuit of immense personal wealth has been on the rise in the United States over the last forty years. Economic journalist Jeff Madrick tells this story through incisive profiles of the individuals responsible for this dramatic shift in our country’s fortunes, from the architects of the free-market economic philosophy (such as Milton Friedman and Alan Greenspan) to the politicians and businessmen (including Nixon, Reagan, Boesky, and Soros) who put it into practice. Their stories detail how a movement initially conceived as a moral battle for freedom instead brought about some of our nation's most pressing economic problems, including the intense economic inequity and instability America suffers from today. This is an indispensible guide to understanding the 1 percent.

Book excerpt: You must read this page before you enter this book. This book consists of facts and opinions of mine . and my freedom of expression consists of the rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly and to petition the US government to impeach the president. Again this is my human right to voice my opinion and freedom of speech, as it is to all private citizens. the book will down right offend you and will straight piss you the fuck off, but frankly I could care less. Most importantly you must understand the point I am trying to get across to you, after finishing the book listen to the news and do some research about what's going on around you, before you judge me! I care so much for the country I live in; and would hate to see it fall or become another man's land. Inside Stupidy and Greed" contains my views of Barack Obama's credibility and why people view him as a savior to this country, and also the way we view and act as a nation to other countries for that matter. How can we forget how greedy our financial system is?, the banks and wall street for example not to mention local cities and other states sharing our country. the way the United States of America is ran as if it was some sort of business, which would have fallen along time ago. My life and every other private citizens in this country is a part of this tragedy. Every human sickens me and I am ashamed of that representing our country, mankind will not change a want for power over money or vice versa. and why do people believe in god? Yet we put his name on our currency, which is the root of all evil is greed. Being so ashamed of my own species while there nothing that I can do but give my opinion on what matters to me and what is around me. Being in conclusion I will leave you with this though before continuing... "It is only a matter of time before we die from our own hand!""

  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book Pay Any Price written by James Risen and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2014 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War corrupts. Endless war corrupts absolutely. Ever since 9/11 America has fought an endless war on terror, seeking enemies everywhere and never promising peace. In Pay Any Price, James Risen reveals an extraordinary litany of the hidden costs of that war: from squandered and stolen dollars, to outrageous abuses of power, to wars on normalcy, decency, and truth. In the name of fighting terrorism, our government has done things every bit as shameful as its historic wartime abuses -- and until this book, it has worked very hard to cover them up. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus. FDR authorized the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans. Presidents Bush and Obama now must face their own reckoning. Power corrupts, but it is endless war that corrupts absolutely.

Book A Greedy Society

Download or read book A Greedy Society written by Charles Henry Orr and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Greedy Society will show the poor, working, and middle-class people hoping for the American dream being sadly disappointed in America. They have been lied to, cheated, and discriminated against, not only in housing but in employment opportunities as well. This is an investigation of the impact of mortgage foreclosures on African American families and communities in urban areas like Chicago, Illinois. There were one million foreclosures in 2010 in the United States, while Wall Street executives and banks received huge profits from real estate transactions. In this study, the author has covered all aspects of the real estate industry. The main coverage was the problems of foreclosures. The secondary issue in this piece was the African American family’s quality of life. How do foreclosure problems affect African Americans’ future? Why are African American families and communities more vulnerable? What will the future be like in homeownership for African American families in the United States? These questions were researched and analyzed in this academic book. The subjects of business, sociology, politics, and economics will be used in this discussion. The direct connection to my first book is deliberate. Foreclosures will increase the homeless population and poverty in the United States.
