Book It Ain t Rock Roll The biography of drummer John Kerrison

Download or read book It Ain t Rock Roll The biography of drummer John Kerrison written by Robin E. Hill and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child John Kerrison was so obsessed with becoming a drummer that he made a snare drum from a biscuit tin and wallpaper. Tutored by the legendary Jim Marshall he turned professional at the age of thirteen. "I quit school at fifteen... The headmaster said choose academia or Rock & Roll... I chose Rock & Roll." John's drum kit survived being loaned to Keith Moon and he played on the same bill as The Rolling Stones. As a scooter riding Mod he experienced the swinging 1960s firsthand and contributed to the deafening arrival of Hard Rock, performing in bands alongside future Deep Purple legends Rod Evans, Nick Simper, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. In 1971 a traumatic spinal cord injury abruptly ended John's promising career as a drummer. Eventually he surfaced from the depths of despair and found an innovative way of regaining his ability to play a full drum kit.

Book London s Working Class Youth and the Making of Post Victorian Britain 1958 1971

Download or read book London s Working Class Youth and the Making of Post Victorian Britain 1958 1971 written by Felix Fuhg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emergence of modern working-class youth culture through the perspective of an urban history of post-war Britain, with a particular focus on the influence of young people and their culture on Britain’s self-image as a country emerging from the constraints of its post-Victorian, imperial past. Each section of the book – Society, City, Pop, and Space – considers in detail the ways in which working-class youth culture corresponded with a fast-changing metropolitan and urban society in the years following the decline of the British Empire. Was teenage culture rooted in the urban experience and the transformation of working-class neighbourhoods? Did youth subcultures emerge simply as a reaction to Britain's changing racial demographic? To what extent did leisure venues and institutions function as laboratories for a developing British pop culture, which ultimately helped Britain re-establish its prominence on the world stage? These questions and more are answered in this book.

Book excerpt: **Kirkus Best Books of the Year (2013)** **Time Magazine 10 Top Nonfiction Books of 2013** **The New Republic Best Books of 2013** In this heart-lifting chronicle, Richard Holmes, author of the best-selling The Age of Wonder, follows the pioneer generation of balloon aeronauts, the daring and enigmatic men and women who risked their lives to take to the air (or fall into the sky). Why they did it, what their contemporaries thought of them, and how their flights revealed the secrets of our planet is a compelling adventure that only Holmes could tell. His accounts of the early Anglo-French balloon rivalries, the crazy firework flights of the beautiful Sophie Blanchard, the long-distance voyages of the American entrepreneur John Wise and French photographer Felix Nadar are dramatic and exhilarating. Holmes documents as well the balloons used to observe the horrors of modern battle during the Civil War (including a flight taken by George Armstrong Custer); the legendary tale of at least sixty-seven manned balloons that escaped from Paris (the first successful civilian airlift in history) during the Prussian siege of 1870-71; the high-altitude exploits of James Glaisher (who rose) seven miles above the earth without oxygen, helping to establish the new science of meteorology); and how Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jules Verne felt the imaginative impact of flight and allowed it to soar in their work. A seamless fusion of history, art, science, biography, and the metaphysics of flights, Falling Upwards explores the interplay between technology and imagination. And through the strange allure of these great balloonists, it offers a masterly portrait of human endeavor, recklessness, and vision. (With 24 pages of color illustrations, and black-and-white illustrations throughout.)

Smoke on the Water is the first book in more than 20 years to tell the story of this remarkable band, from their grandiose inception in 1968 to the release of their latest album in 2003. Drawing from candid interviews with band members, associates, and fans alike, it traces the group through some of the most turbulent times that any band has survived, placing the band's own music in vivid context and illustrating just how profoundly this one group helped change the world.

Book Performing Early Modern Drama Beyond Shakespeare

Download or read book Performing Early Modern Drama Beyond Shakespeare written by Harry R. McCarthy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element provides the first in-depth study of the present-day all-boy company, Edward's Boys, who are based at King Edward VI School ('Shakespeare's School') in Stratford-upon-Avon. Since 2005, the company has produced a wide array of early modern plays, providing the most substantial repertory of early modern drama available for examination by scholars. The Element provides a comprehensive account of the company's practices, drawing on extensive rehearsal and performance observation, evidence from the company's archive, and interviews with actors and key company personnel. The Element takes account of the company's particular educational and strongly interpersonal environment, suggesting that these factors have a distinctive shaping force on their performance practice. In the hands of Edward's Boys, the Element argues, early modern drama becomes the source of company creation, ensemble practice, and virtuosic physical play, inviting us to reimagine what it means – and takes – to perform these plays today.

Book excerpt: "As Cotkin shows, not only did Americans readily take to existentialism, but they were already heirs to a rich tradition of thinkers - from Jonathan Edwards and Herman Melville to Emily Dickinson and William James - who had wrestled with the problems of existence and the contingency of the world long before Sartre and his colleagues. After introducing the concept of an American existential tradition, Cotkin examines how formal existentialism first arrived in America in the 1930s through discussion of Kierkegaard and the early vogue among New York intellectuals for the works of Sartre, Beauvoir, and Camus.

Book Teen Beat Mayhem

Download or read book Teen Beat Mayhem written by Mike Markesich and published by . This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you were on the cusp, or right smack dab in the middle of adolescence during the 1960s, playing in a rock & roll group was the coolest fad around. TeenBeat Mayhem! is a historical account paying tribute to this unheralded musical class from that decade, one comprised of American teenagers who forged their own brand of homegrown rock & roll. The book relates how this nationwide craze exploded following the Beatles nationally televised debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, how amateur and club-working groups were forced to update their sound to stay competitive, while young novices deftly practiced their craft to become energetic performing combos. You'll read accounts relating what it was like making a 45rpm record, and tales of summits and pitfalls which either fortified or broke a combo's collective spirit. It's a timeline account of the popular, regional and lesser-known groups who occupied different hierarchical levels, separated by age, life experience and musical ability, whirling around within a rapidly changing music scene. This entire era would have remained inconspicuous without the unbridled enthusiasm of a few record collectors and rock & roll fanatics. You'll learn how their pioneering efforts during the 1970s to champion awareness and appreciation for the multitudes of forgotten teenage groups flourished over time, ultimately leading to the categorization of a rock & roll sub-genre known worldwide as the sound of '60s garage. TeenBeat Mayhem! includes a meticulously detailed, 228 page 45rpm discography listing thousands of recording combos from A to Z, with monikers like the Rogues, Fugitives and Outcasts, to the more creative and unique: the Alarm Clocks, Zakary Thaks, and Dr. Spec's Optical Illusion; a song title index; reference sources; the Top 1000 "garage" songs depicted by color 45rpm record label scans, and other interesting features. Designed to mimic a high school yearbook of the period, TeenBeat Mayhem! is the first book of its kind geared toward record collectors, garage rock & roll fans, musicologists, neophytes and everyone curious to find out what really happened musically throughout America during the mid to late1960s.
