The paper also explores how the perceived challenges and strategic responses of firms influenced their performance and stock market's valuation of the firms. Executives saw strategic challenges principally in rivalrous terms. Executives sensitive to rivalry took investment-intensive decisions, whereas executives concerned about risk made product market adjustments and entered alliances. Industry turbulence and foreign competition led firms to downsize. Firms led by risk-sensitive executies performed poorly. Downsizing signalled to the stock market a reduction not only in the tangible asset base, but more so in the firm's intangible resources.
