Book excerpt: The belief that America has been providentially chosen for a special destiny has deep roots in the country's past. As both a stimulus of creative American energy and a source of American self-righteousness, this notion has long served as a motivating national mythology. God's New Israel is a collection of thirty-one readings that trace the theme of American destiny under God through major developments in U.S. history. First published in 1971 and now thoroughly updated to reflect contemporary events, it features the words of such prominent and diverse Americans as Jonathan Edwards, Thomas Jefferson, Brigham Young, Chief Seattle, Abraham Lincoln, Frances Willard, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Ralph Reed, and Rosemary Radford Ruether. Neither a history of American religious denominations nor a history of American theology, this book is instead an illuminating look at how religion has helped shape Americans' understanding of themselves as a people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a hundred years, demography has been at the heart of the Zionist project, reflected in the goal of creating and maintaining a Jewish majority in Israel and in ensuring the physical continuation of the Jewish people. Demography continues to be an essential issue in the current struggle between Israel and Palestine. Yet in academic discourse, demography is treated as a minor, largely technical side-issue in the social sciences, with little theoretical consideration given to population processes as social processes. Israel's Destiny: Fertility and Mortality in a Divided Society brings together important recent work in this area. The contributions to Israel's Destiny focus on the influence of religion, religiosity, nationalism, and ethnicity on fertility and mortality in Israel. Israel's Destiny is divided into four sections: the first focuses on fertility, particularly Israel's apparently high birth rate when compared with other countries with a similar standard of living; the second looks at patterns of nuptiality and contraception and the way marriage patterns are shaping group boundaries; the third looks at mortality, particularly among men; and the fourth looks at social policy effects of the demographic process. The main focus is that differential reproduction of the population by national and ethnic group, as well as social class--through fertility and mortality--and the social structuring of the population--through marriage patterns--are critical elements in the creation and evolution of Israeli society. The editors' introduction places all these studies in a wider perspective of current demographic research. The volume provides a concise population history of the state of Israel to help the reader put the studies in their proper local and historical context.

Book excerpt: Fantastic Victory tells the brief but exciting account of Israel's 1967 miracle war, and how this conflict split the world into two camps--those for and those against Israel's fight for its life. With less than 3 million people facing the combined strength of 110 million Arabs supported by the Soviet Union, Israel should have been wiped off the globe. Instead, after six miraculous days, Israel shocked the world by defeating her enemy and winning back not only her ancient capital of Jerusalem, but hundreds of miles of enemy territory as well. Fantastic Victory explains the complexities behind the decades of failed negotiations and subsequent wars to conquer the Jews. Israel's past and present are uniquely central to the world's three great religions--Christianity, Judaism, and Islam--and in the pages that follow, a framework for understanding Israel's future can be seen intimately tied to the outcome of its miracle Six Day War of 1967.

Download or read book Converging Destinies written by Stuart Dauermann and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While all have reason to celebrate the greening of Christian-Jewish relations since the Shoah and the promulgation of Nostra Aetate (4), few will deny that much work remains to be done by Christians and Jews seeking the best way forward that they might best serve God's purposes in the world, the mission of God. This book addresses that need by first surveying how each community has historically conceived of its own mission and from that stance assigned an identity to the other. The text illuminates how such construals have often impeded progress and therefore need to be upgraded and supplemented. But how shall this be done? Converging Destinies proposes an eschatological vision and practical suggestions to summon Jews and Christians to prepare for that day when each will be both commended and reproved by the judge of all, sounding a call for more determined action, greater humility, and cooperative effort as together Jews and Christians serve the mission of God, accountable to him for how they have served him and each other in the world that he has created according to his will.

Book The Destiny of Israel and the Church

Download or read book The Destiny of Israel and the Church written by Derek Prince and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel is at the center of a powerful clash of forces, but God has established firm covenants with both Israel and the church. The only reliable source of light upon the situation in the Middle East is provided by God’s prophetic Word. If we do not seek the light that comes from this source, we will inevitably find ourselves in the dark, subject to confusion and deception. The church had its origin within Israel, but over the centuries the destinies of the two groups have diverged widely—until now. An exciting feature of our time is that the destinies of Israel and the church are once again beginning to converge. This God-ordained convergence will produce the most dramatic and significant developments in all of human history. In The Destiny of Israel and the Church, renowned Bible teacher Derek Prince explores the answers to these questions, and more: Has the church replaced Israel in God’s plan? Why is the tiny nation of Israel the focus of world attention? What is the restoration of Israel? What is the responsibility of Christians toward Israel?

Book excerpt: As the biblical clock counts down, the destinies of Israel and the Church are converging. As God's people, both Jew and Gentile, make themselves ready as his warrior bride, Christians will face increasing spiritual warfare that intersects with warfare in the natural realm. Sandra Teplinsky calls Jewish believers to stand firm in these times of intensified opposition and make themselves ready as the bride of Christ. Israel's Anointing encourages believers to take up the biblical mandate to make Israel jealous, to help God's chosen people see this company of militant lovers in whose midst Yeshua dwells--and want him at last. Anyone with a love for Israel and an eye toward the end times will connect with this powerful book.

Book The State of Israel vs the Jews

Download or read book The State of Israel vs the Jews written by Sylvain Cypel and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A PopMatters Best Book of the Year A perceptive study of how Israel’s actions, which run counter to the traditional historical values of Judaism, are putting Jewish people worldwide in an increasingly untenable position, now with a new introduction. More than a decade ago, the historian Tony Judt considered whether the behavior of Israel was becoming not only “bad for Israel itself” but also, on a wider scale, “bad for the Jews.” Under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, this issue has grown ever more urgent. In The State of Israel vs. the Jews, veteran journalist Sylvain Cypel addresses it in depth, exploring Israel’s rightward shift on the international scene and with regard to the diaspora. Cypel reviews the little-known details of the military occupation of Palestinian territory, the mindset of ethnic superiority that reigns throughout an Israeli “colonial camp” that is largely in the majority, and the adoption of new laws, the most serious of which establishes two-tier citizenship between Jews and non-Jews. He shows how Israel has aligned itself with authoritarian regimes and adopted the practices of a security state, including the use of technologies such as the software that enabled the tracking and, ultimately, the assassination of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Lastly, The State of Israel vs. the Jews examines the impact of Israel’s evolution in recent years on the two main communities of the Jewish diaspora, in France and the United States, considering how and why public figures in each differ in their approaches.
