Book An Introduction To Bioceramics

Download or read book An Introduction To Bioceramics written by Larry L Hench and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-10-08 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic materials that are specially developed for use as medical and dental implants are termed bioceramics. They include alumina and zirconia, bioactive glasses, glass-ceramics, coatings and composites, hydroxyapatite and resorbable calcium phosphates, and radiotherapy glasses. This is the first textbook in a field which is growing rapidly in clinical applications including orthopedics, otolaryngology, maxillo-facial and plastic surgery, oral surgery, periodontology, and tumor therapy. Fourteen chapters, written by world experts, describe the processing, compositions, properties, surface chemistry, tissue response, and clinical applications. There are also chapters on characterization and quality assurance testing, and the procedures that must be followed to satisfy regulatory requirements. A forecast of the future needs of the field and Appendices that summarize the relevant standards and test methods complete this unique book. The purpose of the book is to summarize and synthesize the very large and disparate body of literature in the field. Thus, it is easy to use as a textbook for an undergraduate or first year graduate course, or short industrial course, or as a reference source.

    Book Details:
  • Author : The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-04-22
  • ISBN : 1000191044
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book ISR and the Gulf written by The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) is today a core capability for the modern military, in peacetime and in war. ISR is and will remain a key enabler in the Gulf region in ongoing conflicts. There is still a reliance on the United States, and its ISR systems deployed in the Gulf, to facilitate ongoing operations and to provide situational awareness at the tactical, operational and strategic levels. However, even US ISR is finite, and there is growing demand for its resources in other regions. The Gulf Cooperation Council states have some ISR capacity, but this needs further development and improved exploitation to better address regional needs. Written by a team of IISS specialists, ISR & the Gulf: An Assessment considers the meaning of and requirement for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in the context of the region. It examines the military needs and industrial aspirations of the Gulf Arab states regarding ISR, and the opportunities and risks these present. The report is a companion work to the Institute’s Missile-Defence Cooperation in the Gulf, and is similarly intended to help provide the basis for informed decision-making to support improved security in the region.

Download or read book Child Mental Health Practice from the Ecological Perspective written by Richard L. Munger and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1991 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecological perspective is a contextual approach which works at the interface between families and the broader ecology or ecosystem of the child; the approach is not new but has not been widely adopted due to the lack of illustrative material available for practitioners. Through an approach more descriptive and explanatory than empirical, the author shows the clinician (or other child care professional) why the child's environment is crucial and provides techniques to draw people in the child's environment into the healing process.

Book Seeking Truth in International TV News

Download or read book Seeking Truth in International TV News written by Vivien Marsh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts CGTN (formerly CCTV-News) and the BBC’s international television news head-to-head, interrogating competing ‘truths’ in the exacting business of news reporting. Written by a media scholar and former long-serving BBC News journalist, Seeking Truth in International TV News asks if China’s English-language television news programmes are little more than state propaganda, and if the BBC can be viewed as a universal news standard to which all other broadcasters should aspire. Over 8 years of Xi Jinping’s rule, it investigates how the international TV news channels of CGTN and the BBC reported on Chinese politics, protests in Hong Kong, disasters, China in Africa, and insurgency and its suppression in Xinjiang. The comparison reveals uneven editorial imperatives at the Chinese broadcaster and raises questions about the BBC’s professed tenets of balance and impartiality. It also illustrates how Chinese journalists commit ‘small acts of journalism’ that push the boundaries of information control. A rigorous analysis of reportage from the two channels, this book will be relevant to scholars of global media, journalism, international relations and public diplomacy. It will also interest those in academia, the media and international affairs who want to examine the nature of news and ‘soft power’ in a comparative context.

Book Conflict and Peace Building in Divided Societies

Download or read book Conflict and Peace Building in Divided Societies written by Anthony Oberschall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book provides an integrated account of ethnic, nationality and sectarian conflicts in the contemporary world including the role of collective myths, the mass media and the ethnification of identities as contributors to ethnic conflicts and wars. In addition to many examples from the last two decades, Oberschall provides a comprehensive overview of the conflict and peace processes in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and the Middle East. Oberschall analyzes: peace building through constitutional design power sharing governance disarming combatants, post-accord security and refugee return transitional justice (truth and reconciliation commissions, war crimes tribunals) economic and social reconstruction in a multiethnic society. In addition to many examples from the last two decades, Oberschall provides a comprehensive overview of the conflict and peace processes for Bosnia, Northern Ireland, and Israel-Palestinians. He argues that insurgency creates contentious issues over and above the original root causes of the conflict, that the internal divisions within the adversaries trigger conflicts that jeopardize peace processes, and that security and rebuilding a failed state are a precondition for lasting peace and a democratic polity. This book will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and academics interested in the fields of peace studies, war and conflict studies, ethnic studies and political sociology.

Book Foundations of Futures Studies

Download or read book Foundations of Futures Studies written by Jose Valciukas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Futures studies is a new field of inquiry involving systematic and explicit thinking about alternative futures. It aims to demystify the future, make possibilities for the future more known to us, and increase human control over the future. This book summarizes and expands contributions of futurists to the envisioning power and well-being of humanity. Bell brings together futurist intellectual tools, describing and explaining not only the methods, but also the nature, concepts, theories, and exemplars of the field.Foundations of Futures Studies fulfills Bell's five main purposes for writing this two-volume effort: (1) to show that futures studies, like other fields from anthropology to zoology, exists as an identifiable sphere of intellectual activity; (2) to create a teaching instrument that can be used as a basic text for core courses in futures studies; (3) to futurize the thinking of specialists in other disciplines; (4) to contribute to the further development and improvement of futures studies; and (5) to provide tools to empower both ordinary people and leaders to act in ways that create better futures for themselves and their societies. Bell maintains that despite its sometimes doomsday rhetorical style and widespread use by special interests, futures studies offers hope for the future of humanity and concrete ways of realizing that hope in the real world of our everyday lives. It will appeal to all interested in futures studies, as well as sociologists, economists, political scientists, and historians.
