Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the isokinetic bench press could discriminate football-playing ability and to correlate the isokinetic bench press with other commonly used football upper and lower body power tests. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate football players aged 18-26 years were divided into two groups by player ability: starters (Group 2) and non-starters (Group 1). On separate days, subjects performed the vertical jump, 40-yard dash, one-repetition maximum (RM) bench press and isokinetic bench press at 60, 180 and 300°/s. Pearson Correlation Coefficient analysis revealed significant correlations among all measures in the present study (height, weight, isokinetic peak force at 60°/s, 180°/s and 300°/s, vertical jump, 1-RM bench press and 40-yard dash). Height and weight negatively correlated with all measures, except the 40-yard dash, indicating that taller and/or heavier football players produced higher (slower) 40-yard dash times. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if whole body vibration effects strength gains in the bench press, the back squat, and the power clean in division 1 football players. Thirty-one NCAA Division 1 male football players volunteered for this study and were randomly assigned to a control group (C=16) or one of two vibration groups (V1=7, V2=8). Subjects followed the training program for eight weeks. A pre-test, mid-test, and post-test one repetition max was measured at 0, 4, and 8 weeks for the bench press, the back squat, and the power clean. A 3x3 factorial ANOVA revealed varied results between the three lifts performed. In the bench press, there were no significant differences in strength gains between the three training groups (F=.616, p=.547). In addition, there was no significant interaction (F=1.05, p=3.74). There were significant differences between trials in the bench press in strength gains (F=7.570, p=.006). In the back squat, there were no significant differences in strength gains between the three training groups (F=.847, p=.440). Even as coaches evaluate each athlete by using the results of a vast battery of tests, there has been considerable speculation and discussion about the physical attributes of Division I football players and their playing status. The purpose of this study was to determine what influence strength, power, and performance tests scores have on an individual's playing status. The Skill group results indicate that power is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters. Simultaneously, the Combo group results indicate that speed is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters. Also, the L.O.S. group results indicate that bodyweight is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters.

Book excerpt: "In recent years the National Collegiate Athlete Association has lessened the amount of time they allow their participating football members to practice in the preseason. Consequently, coaches look for ways to best utilize the time they do have. This study was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference in preseason testing results between the starters and non-starters. Seventy-two members of the Bemidji State University (BSU) football team, 24 in three separate positions, were studied over a three years span, encompassing 33 games to determine of [sic] the starters performed significantly higher than the non-starters in the five fitness tests performed. No such study had been performed at BSU longer than three games prior to this research. Athletes were tested on the 40 yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, pro agility, and the Beaver Run. Results were entered into an SPSS program and compared using an independent samples t-test. There were significant results between the starters and non-starters of the linebacker and the wide receiver group. No such results were found in any of the five preseason fitness tests amongst the defensive back groups. The results of this study indicate there are differences between starters and non-starters in certain position groups and certain tests within those groups. Not all tests were significant and are able to be used to help determine potential starters over non-starters"--Abstract.
