Book excerpt: This original and fresh book explores Okinawa's makeover as a tourist mecca in the long historical shadow and among the physical ruins of the Pacific War's most devastating land battle. Gerald Figal considers how a place burdened by a history of semicolonialism, memories of war and occupation, economic hardship, and contentious current political affairs has reshaped itself into a resort destination. Drawing on an innovative mix of detailed archival research and extensive fieldwork, Gerald Figal considers the ways Okinawa has accommodated war experience and its legacies within the manufacture and promotion of both a "tropical paradise" image and a heritage tourism site identified with the premodern Ryukyu Kingdom. Tracing the postwar formation of "Tourist Okinawa," Figal addresses interrelated issues of economic sustainability, local political autonomy, interregional and international relations, environmental preservation, historical and cultural self-representation, and especially Okinawa's role as a global peace site laboring under the legacies of war. From the end of World War Two to the present, the author follows Okinawa's evolution through three main themes: war memorialization, tourism-influenced environmental and historical restoration, and invasion and occupation represented by U.S. military bases and beach resorts. Creatively, accessibly, and eloquently written, this compelling work highlights a set of islands that represent key issues facing contemporary Japan.

Junkinsas much the poet in design as in languagehas achieved another triumph of deftness, irony and grace. Allen Josephs (On Hemingway and Spain) I was bowled over by Puss. I have never read, in any other literary work, such a profoundly pure and honest and dead-on rendering of the young girl. And that coupled with her extraordinary father/daughter relationship, it moved me deeply. He did for that relationship what Hemingway did for father and son in Indian Camp. Glen, the editor of the local newspaper decides to publish a pic (pic) of them to boost the shrinking circulation of his ‘paper, but Jade, his young female journalist, is opposed to the scheme and tries to sabotage it. He orders Luke, his young Press photographer, and a former Special Forces soldier, to take the pic of them and he agrees despite Jade’s pleas not to take it. Glen also orders Luke to take some advertising pics at a new local business which he discovers sells inflatable sex dolls. It is owned by Zanna, an eccentric female former Royal Navy officer who sometimes acts as if she is still at sea. Luke decides to avoid taking the pic by taking one of the sex dolls, instead, and trying to convince Glen that they are the doggers. Meanwhile, Glen hires someone else, an unemployed family man called Andy, to take the pic. He is excited by the prospect of becoming a Press photographer but is also afraid that his wife and kids will find out what kind of pic it is. Alan Jones, a local councillor, who is fanatically pro-Havensea and is bitterly opposed to the pic being taken, arranges for Luke to be attacked to prevent him from taking it. He also meets Kitty, an attractive female visitor from Canada. She believes that he is interested in her, but is he just using her to publicise Havensea in the Canadian tourism market instead? Among the final scenes. Jade investigates the doggers but is trapped by them in a deserted car park at night. Luke and Zanna are trapped by the tide and try to paddle across the flooded marsh on the inflatable sex dolls. Will they make it? Andy is also trapped by the tide and tries to escape on a passing piece of sea junk. Luke and Jade meet again. Can they be friends again - or more than just friends?

Book Vanished Islands and Hidden Continents of the Pacific

Download or read book Vanished Islands and Hidden Continents of the Pacific written by Patrick D. Nunn and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands—as well as entire continents—are reputed to have disappeared in many parts of the world. Yet there is little information on this subject concerning its largest ocean, the Pacific. Over the years, geologists have amassed data that point to the undeniable fact of islands having disappeared in the Pacific, a phenomenon that the oral traditions of many groups of Pacific Islanders also highlight. There are even a few instances where fragments of Pacific continents have disappeared, becoming hidden from view rather than being submerged. In this scientifically rigorous yet readily comprehensible account of the fascinating subject of vanished islands and hidden continents in the Pacific, the author ranges far and wide, from explanations of the region’s ancient history to the meanings of island myths. Using both original and up-to-date information, he shows that there is real value in bringing together myths and the geological understanding of land movements. A description of the Pacific Basin and the "ups and downs" of the land within its vast ocean is followed by chapters explaining how—long before humans arrived in this part of the world—islands and continents that no longer exist were once present. A succinct account is given of human settlement of the region and the establishment of cultural contexts for the observation of occasional catastrophic earth-surface changes and their encryption in folklore. The author also addresses the persistent myths of a "sunken continent" in the Pacific, which became widespread after European arrival and were subsequently incorporated into new age and pseudoscience explanations of our planet and its inhabitants. Finally, he presents original data and research on island disappearances witnessed by humans, recorded in oral and written traditions, and judged by geoscience to be authentic. Examples are drawn from throughout the Pacific, showing that not only have islands collapsed, and even vanished, within the past few hundred years, but that they are also liable to do so in the future.
