  • Author : Jochen B. Fiebach
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9783798513723

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke MRI is a new imaging tool providing detailed information of the pathophysiological aspects of cerebral ischemia. This book with CD-ROM includes a case collection of 25 hyperacute stroke patients, all imaged within six hours of stroke onset with a complete stroke MRI protocol. Stroke MRI and the established clinical methods are compared and recent results from single and multicenter trials are presented to demonstrate the advantages of MRI for stroke patients. The CD-ROM contains diffusion-, T2-, T2*-perfusion-weighted images and MR angiography. Each case offers to answer the relevant questions concerning vessel status and lesion size as well as presence or absence of a "tissue at risk" with a self assessment mode and the expertsa (TM) therapeutic decision. The CD and the book are complementary to avoid redundancy as far as possible. They will be useful to both the experienced researcher using MRI and the clinician or researcher with no previous knowledge of the technology.

Book Stroke Prevention and Treatment

Download or read book Stroke Prevention and Treatment written by Jeffrey L. Saver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is the second leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability worldwide. This invaluable reference provides clinicians caring for stroke patients with ready access to the optimal evidence for best practice in stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and stroke recovery. Now an edited volume, the editors and authors, many of whom are members of the Cochrane Stroke Review Group, describe all available medical, endovascular, and surgical treatments; the rationale for using them; and the strength of the evidence for their safety and effectiveness. New chapters cover key, rapidly advancing therapeutic topics, including prehospital stroke care and regionalized stroke systems, endovascular reperfusion therapy, and electrical and magnetic brain stimulation to enhance recovery. This is an essential resource for clinicians translating into practice the many dramatic advances that have been made in the treatment and prevention of stroke, and suggesting the most appropriate interventions.

Book Ischaemia Reperfusion Injury

Download or read book Ischaemia Reperfusion Injury written by Pierce A. Grace and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999-02-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ischaemia-Reperfusion Injury is concerned with the consequences of interrupting and restoring blood flow to tissues. Many common clinical conditions are caused by interruption of blood flow to tissues (eg, ischaemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke); blood flow is also interrupted deliberately in many surgical procedures (eg, cardiac surgery, arterial surgery, transplant surgery, limb surgery with tourniquet). In treating such conditions or after performing such operations the aim of the clinician is to restore the blood supply to the ischaemic tissue. Paradoxically, restoration of blood flow to ischaemic tissues can lead to further tissue damage with the potential for severe local and systemic injury. This book focuses on the clinical, pathological and biochemical processes involved in ischaemia-reperfusion injury and gives an overview of the strategies that may be adopted to mitigate or prevent such injury. This book will be of interest to both clinicians and scientists who have to deal with or have interest in this difficult but important problem.

Book Sports Related Concussions in Youth

Download or read book Sports Related Concussions in Youth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, few subjects at the intersection of medicine and sports have generated as much public interest as sports-related concussions - especially among youth. Despite growing awareness of sports-related concussions and campaigns to educate athletes, coaches, physicians, and parents of young athletes about concussion recognition and management, confusion and controversy persist in many areas. Currently, diagnosis is based primarily on the symptoms reported by the individual rather than on objective diagnostic markers, and there is little empirical evidence for the optimal degree and duration of physical rest needed to promote recovery or the best timing and approach for returning to full physical activity. Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture reviews the science of sports-related concussions in youth from elementary school through young adulthood, as well as in military personnel and their dependents. This report recommends actions that can be taken by a range of audiences - including research funding agencies, legislatures, state and school superintendents and athletic directors, military organizations, and equipment manufacturers, as well as youth who participate in sports and their parents - to improve what is known about concussions and to reduce their occurrence. Sports-Related Concussions in Youth finds that while some studies provide useful information, much remains unknown about the extent of concussions in youth; how to diagnose, manage, and prevent concussions; and the short- and long-term consequences of concussions as well as repetitive head impacts that do not result in concussion symptoms. The culture of sports negatively influences athletes' self-reporting of concussion symptoms and their adherence to return-to-play guidance. Athletes, their teammates, and, in some cases, coaches and parents may not fully appreciate the health threats posed by concussions. Similarly, military recruits are immersed in a culture that includes devotion to duty and service before self, and the critical nature of concussions may often go unheeded. According to Sports-Related Concussions in Youth, if the youth sports community can adopt the belief that concussions are serious injuries and emphasize care for players with concussions until they are fully recovered, then the culture in which these athletes perform and compete will become much safer. Improving understanding of the extent, causes, effects, and prevention of sports-related concussions is vitally important for the health and well-being of youth athletes. The findings and recommendations in this report set a direction for research to reach this goal.

Book ABC of Arterial and Venous Disease
