Book excerpt: In this beautifully illustrated and closely argued book, a completely updated and much expanded third edition of his magisterial survey, Curl describes in lively and stimulating prose the numerous revivals of the Egyptian style from Antiquity to the present day. Drawing on a wealth of sources, his pioneering and definitive work analyzes the remarkable and persistent influence of Ancient Egyptian culture on the West. The author deftly develops his argument that the civilization of Ancient Egypt is central, rather than peripheral, to the development of much of Western architecture, art, design, and religion. Curl examines: the persistence of Egyptian motifs in design from Graeco-Roman Antiquity, through the Medieval, Baroque, and Neo-Classical periods rise of Egyptology in the nineteenth and twentieth-century manifestations of Egyptianisms prompted by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb various aspects of Egyptianizing tendencies in the Art Deco style and afterwards. For students of art, architectural and ancient history, and those interested in western European culture generally, this book will be an inspiring and invaluable addition to the available literature.

So where did she come from and what really happened to her eight surviving children, four of whom were daughters? By carefully studying the documents mentioning members of the family and including all the material mentioning the women of the New Kingdom village of Deir al-Medina and other sources, the author once again puts to the forefront the remarkable role played by ordinary women in ancient Egypt.

Book Protecting Pharaoh s Treasures

Download or read book Protecting Pharaoh s Treasures written by Wafaa El Saddik and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in Egypt's Nile Delta, Wafaa El Saddik was fascinated by the magnificent pharaonic monuments from an early age, and as a student she dreamed of conducting excavations herself and working in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. At a time when Egyptology was dominated by men, especially those with close connections to the regime, she was determined to succeed, and secured grants to study in Boston, London, and Vienna, eventually becoming the first female general director of the country's most prestigious museum. She launched the first general inventory of the museum's cellars in its more than hundred-year history, in the process discovering long-forgotten treasures, as well as confronting corruption and nepotism in the antiquities administration. In this very personal memoir, she looks back at the history of her country and asks, What happened to Egypt? Where did Nasser's bright new beginning go wrong? Why did Sadat fail to bring peace? Why did the Egyptians allow themselves to be so corrupted by Mubarak? And why was the Muslim Brotherhood able to achieve power? But her first concern remains: How can the ancient legacy of her country truly be protected?

Book Egypt in the Eastern Mediterranean During the Old Kingdom

Download or read book Egypt in the Eastern Mediterranean During the Old Kingdom written by Karin Sowada and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2009 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a revised view of Egyptian foreign relations in the eastern Mediterranean during the Old Kingdom (3rd-6th Dynasties) based on an extensive analysis of old and new archaeological data, and its relationship to the well-known textual sources. The material demonstrates that while Egypt's most important relationships were with Byblos and the Lebanese coast generally, it was an active participant in the geo-political and economic affairs of the Levant throughout much of the third millennium BCE. The archaeological data shows that the foundation of these relationships was established at the beginning of the Early Dynastic Period and essentially continued until the end of the 6th Dynasty with ebbs, flows and changes of geographical and political emphasis. It is argued that, despite the paucity of textual data, the 4th Dynasty represents the apogee of Egypt's engagement in the region, a time when the centralised state was at the height of its power and control of human and economic capital. More broadly, this study shows that Egyptian interaction in the eastern Mediterranean fits the pattern of state-to-state contact between ruling elites which was underpinned by official expeditions engaged in gift and commodity exchange, diplomatic endeavours and military incursions.

Book excerpt: This volume is a study of ceramic changes in the stratified settlement at Kom Rabia, Memphis, during the Late Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period. The pottery is presented by sectors, following the archaeological narrative of Giddy's report (The Survey of Memphis VI), and quantitative analysis of a random sample taken from 73% of all contexts is used to plot ceramic changes through time. The fine points of this development are discussed in the commentary for each corpus, while Appendices 1 and 2 show the distribution of types within the sequence and of pottery within single contexts. Within the Egyptian pottery assemblage there were classes that required discussion of all occurrences and these are presented in two separate chapters: vessels with marks incised before and after firing (Chapter 12, Carla Gallorini) and large handmade oval plates with incised decoration ('fish dishes') (Chapter 13, Bettina Bader). Three further chapters discuss the non-Egyptian pottery: Nubian Pottery (Chapter 14, Janine Bourriau and Serena Giuliani); Aegean and Cypriote Fine Wares (Chapter 15, Kathryn Eriksson) and Middle Bronze Age Canaanite Jars (Chapter 16, Mary Ownby).
