Book Isaiah s Political Message

Download or read book Isaiah s Political Message written by Olof Bäckersten and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have traditionally identified two fundamental, and somewhat separate, discourses in Isaiah 1-39. In what might be labelled the social-critical discourse, we supposedly encounter a prophet who condemns the Jerusalemite elite for their complacent attitudes and decadent life-style in general, and for their more or less systematic oppression of the less fortunate in particular. This lack of social justice, Isaiah emphasises, will indeed be punished by YHWH. In the discourse that might preferably be labelled foreign-political, scholars have found that the prophet repeatedly discourages Judahite participation in anti-Assyrian rebellions, since such strategies are offensive to YHWH and their plans will therefore come to nothing.Olof Backersten presents an attempt to question the existence of a social-critical discourse in Isaiah 1-39. He argues that the texts that have been proffered as proofs for such a discourse relate instead, with surprisingly few although notable exceptions, to the critique of Judah's anti-Assyrian policy. The result of this investigation has implications for our understanding of the book of Isaiah as a whole. A social-critical emphasis can only be detected in Isaiah 1 and Isaiah 56-66, whereas Isaiah 2-39(55) provides variations on a foreign-political theme in the sense that the focus falls on the relationship between nations in general and Judah's position on the international arena in particular.

Book Isaiah and His Interpreters

Download or read book Isaiah and His Interpreters written by John J. Schmitt and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah and his interpreters sympathetically presents and analyzes what scholars have proposed as the main thrust of Isaiah's preaching--Doom, Conversion, Promise, Purification--and shows that they all have a solid base in the text of the book of prophets. The different interpretations of Isaiah, and other aspects, such as the prophet's use of language, the theory of his connection with the wisdom tradition in ancient Israel, and the processes by which his words have come down to us, are all clearly treated in this volume. This comprehensive survey brings the reader up-to-date with all modern schools of thought about Isaiah. Dr. Scmitt enables us to see Isaiah, not only as one who foretold the company of the Messiah, but, most importantly, as a fellow believer who guides us in our religious strivings.--from back cover.

Book Writing and Reading the Scroll of Isaiah Volume 1

Download or read book Writing and Reading the Scroll of Isaiah Volume 1 written by Craig C. Broyles and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first part of a 2-volume work, this study combines recent approaches that treat the formation and early interpretation of the final form of the book of Isaiah with the more conventional historical-critical methods that treat the use of traditions by Isaiah's authors and editors. Studies investigate Isaiah's use of early sacred tradition, the editing and contextualization of oracles within the Isaianic tradition itself, and the interpretation of the book of Isaiah in later traditions (as seen in the various versions of the text and various communities). Contributors of this volume include virtually all of the major scholars of Isaiah and the leading scholars of biblical interpretation in the intertestamental, New Testament, and early Jewish periods.

Book excerpt: The Book of Isaiah speaks in troubled times. Its message for God’s people Israel stretches across prosperity, loss, disaster and the beginnings of a fresh hope. It is rooted in the events of its time and conveys God’s message about how to be faithful people and how to be a part of God’s people in their time. As Christians try to serve the kingdom in our own time, the Book of Isaiah speaks to us of the need to seek God, to listen and to understand his word. This commentary seeks to explore some of these themes and reflections. It looks to create a space in which Christian readers can think and reflect about what God is calling us to now as we seek to serve the Kingdom of our God. Engaging with critical scholarship but designed to be accessible for those beginning formal theological study or Christians who want to go deeper in their understanding of the book, The Kingdom of Our God demonstrates that the words of the prophets can still speak to us today

Book excerpt: Pointing out striking correlations between the catastrophe of 9/11 and the destruction of ancient Jerusalem, Brueggemann shows how the prophetic biblical response to that crisis was truth-telling in the face of ideology, grief in the face of denial, and hope in the face of despair. He argues that the same prophetic responses are urgently required from us now if we are to escape the deathliness of denial and despair. --from publisher description.
