Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation with philological notes is the revised version of a dissertation presented in 1973 to the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome. Its method is that of comparative Northwest Semitic philology, who have elucidated many obscure and often emended biblical texts with the aid of Ugaritic and Phoenician. It is intended as a contribution to the better understanding of the Hebrew of Is 28-33 and as an addition to the ever growing materials for a thorough overhaul of biblical Hebrew lexica and grammars. These chapters provide a good but manageable sampling of isaian poetry together with a fine example of the so-called prophetic liturgy genre in chap. 33.

Book Under Every Green Tree

Download or read book Under Every Green Tree written by Susan Ackerman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By focusing on the forms of religious expression which the sixth-century prophets condemn, we can begin to apprehend the diversity which characterized exilic religion. Moreover, by recognizing the polemical nature of the prophetic critiques and by resolving to read these critiques without prophetic prejudice and instead with a non-judgmental eye, we can place ourselves in a position to re-evaluate the traditional descriptions of the sixth-century cult. Our task, then, is to read anew; our aim is to judge afresh. With this goal in mind, we turn our attention to the major prophetic texts which will comprise our study: Jeremiah 7 and 44, Ezekiel 8, Isaiah 57, and Isaiah 65." - From the Introduction

Book Literary Motifs and Patterns in the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Literary Motifs and Patterns in the Hebrew Bible written by Shemaryahu Talmon and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection gathers together Professor Shemaryahu Talmon’s contributions to the literary study of the Bible, and complements his acclaimed Literary Studies in the Hebrew Bible: Form and Content: Collected Studies (Jerusalem: Magnes / Leiden: Brill, 1993). The articles included herein span a broad range of topics, closely and comprehensively assessing fundamental themes and stylistic conceits present in biblical literature. Each study picks up one of these motifs or patterns, and traces its meaning and usage throughout the entire Bible. In Talmon’s estimation, these literary markers transcend all strata of the Bible, and despite diachronic developments, they retain their basic meanings and connotations throughout, even when employed by different authors over a span of hundreds of years. He demonstrates this convincingly by marshaling dozens of examples, each of which is valuable in its own right, and when taken all together, these building-blocks form a solid edifice that validate his approach. He judiciously employs this synchronic method throughout, frequently invoking an exegetical principle according to which one biblical verse can be employed to interpret the other, if they are found in similar contexts and with overlapping formulation. To use an expression that he coined elsewhere, his hermeneutical method can be described first and foremost as “The World of the Bible from Within.” Throughout the articles that appear in this volume, one is repeatedly struck by his sensitivity to the language and style of the biblical authors. He was blessed with a rich literary intuition, and shares with his readers his ability to see, hear, and understand the rhythms and poetics of biblical literature. In this volume, many of Talmon’s contributions are made accessible in fresh form to the benefit of both those who already know his work and to a newer generation of scholars for whom his work continues to prove important.

Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

The Song of Songs is featured alongside the prophetic voices of Amos, Hosea and Isaiah, and essays on the Binding of Isaac and on the book of Ruth. • Author : Mark W. Hamilton
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck

Download or read book A Kingdom for a Stage written by Mark W. Hamilton and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political rhetoric of ancient Israel took several literary, architectural, and graphic forms. Much of the relevant material concerns kingship, but other loci of authority and submission also drew significant attention. Mark W. Hamilton illustrates how these "texts" interacted with other political rhetorics, especially those of the great Mesopotamian empires. By paying close attention to the argumentation of the Israelite literature as well as their function as epideictic oratory building solidarity with hearers he reveals the complexity of Israelite intellectual activity both during and after the period of the monarchy. By doing this he shows that this body of thought lies at the heart of Western political thought even today.

Book A Handbook on Isaiah

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jan de Waard
  • Publisher : Eisenbrauns
  • Release : 1997-01-01
  • ISBN : 157506023X
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book A Handbook on Isaiah written by Jan de Waard and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the first of a projected series on the Hebrew Bible, de Waard aims to give translators better insight into the viewpoint of the textual critic to help them find a good base for translation. Though of primary interest for translators, students and scholars will also be pleased to find that de Waard summarizes the arguments and ratings of the Hebrew Old Testament Text Project. Because the final report of the HOTTP was published in French and was the work of textual critics rather than translation specialists, its valuable contribution was found to have practical limitations. DeWaard's work is also valuable because it examines three major Jewish versions in addition to the Christian versions selected by the Project for study. Future volumes are planned to cover other portions of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.

Book The marz a in the Prophetic Literature

Download or read book The marz a in the Prophetic Literature written by John McLaughlin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marzēaḥ existed for 3000 years in the Semitic world, but is only mentioned in the First Testament at Amos 6:7 and Jer 16:5. Other prophetic texts have been proposed as allusions that do not use the term, but without using any consistent criteria. This study analyzes those allusions in light of the extra-biblical references. The extra-biblical marzēaḥ references indicate three consistent features: upper-class drinking within a religious context. These elements provide the minimum criteria for evaluating possible allusions in the books of Amos, Hosea, Isaiah and Ezekiel, plus the direct references at Amos 6:7 and Jeremiah 16:5. Combining all known references with the biblical allusions provides a single point of reference for future work on the marzēaḥ. This volume will be of special value to those interested in ancient Semitic religion.
