Book The Ordeals of Isaac and Jacob

Download or read book The Ordeals of Isaac and Jacob written by Martin Sicker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical author had to demonstrate that the founding fathers of the model civilization-envisioned in Mosaic legislation intended as a model for emulation by other peoples and nations-were recognizably human-flawed as all humans are. One can empathize with Isaac or Jacob who are seen to be human with their faults and frailties-which one cannot do with a superhuman being. These stories illustrate dramatically there are no characters of mythic proportions, no superheroes, only normal people living in dysfunctional families, erring, doing acts that are occasionally senseless, and often embarrassing. Yet, these same people passed on an intellectual and spiritual heritage that will ultimately find full expression in the teachings found in the remaining books of the Pentateuch. The Ordeals of Isaac and Jacob focuses on what the biblical texts are telling us-explicitly and implicitly-about these men, the world in which they lived, and how they managed to preserve the covenantal heritage left to them by Abraham. Since biblical texts are not as clear as one might imagine, scholars have struggled for two millennia to comprehend what the texts are actually stating and attempting to convey to the reader. In re-examining these Texts, the author has consulted a wide range of commentaries and studies which approach the biblical narratives from a variety of perspectives, and offers some novel insights of his own.

Book excerpt: No nation has been subjected to a wider range of biblical attitudes and emotions than Edom. In some sources, Edom is perceived as Israel’s brother; in many others, the animosity toward Edom is tremendous. The book of Genesis introduces Isaac, his wife Rebecca, and their twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Rivalry between the brothers emerges even before their birth and escalates over the course of their lives. The question of which son should be favored also causes tension in the parents’ relationship, and most of the Genesis text concerning Isaac and Rebecca revolves around this issue. The narrative describes the fraternal conflict between Jacob and Esau at length, and many hold that this description is a reflection of the hostility between Edom and Israel. However, the relationship between the brothers is not always depicted as strained. The twofold relationship between the brothers in Genesis—brotherhood and fraternity coupled with hatred and rivalry—introduces a dichotomy that is retained throughout the Hebrew Bible. In this monograph, Assis elucidates the complex relationship between Edom and Israel reflected in the Bible, to attempt to clarify the source of this complexity and the function that this relationship serves in the various biblical texts and Israel’s early history. He shows how this relationship plays an important role in the formation of Israel’s identity, and how the historical interaction between the nations influenced the people’s theological conception, as reflected in prophetic literature, poetry, and biblical narrative.

Book excerpt: Isaac is the second of the patriarchs of Israel, the only son of Abraham and Sarah, as well as the father of Esau and Jacob. Although Sarah was past the age of childbearing, God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son, and Isaac was born. Later, to test Abraham's obedience, God commanded Abraham to sacrifice the boy. Abraham made all the preparations for the ritual sacrifice, but God spared Isaac at the last moment. In the Old and New Testaments, God is called the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because with them God's relationship of promise and purpose was fixed for all those who descended from them.Jacob, also called Israel, was a Hebrew patriarch as the grandson of Abraham, the son of Isaac and Rebekah, and also viewed as the traditional ancestor of the people of Israel. Jacob, through an elaborate double deception, managed to obtain his older brother's birthright from their father. After fleeing from his brother Jacob, he took refuge in Mesopotamia where he met his wives Rachel and Rebekah and fathered twelve sons, the twelve tribes of Israel.

Book The Three Princes of God

Download or read book The Three Princes of God written by RV and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does God require? A humble heart, a willing spirit, and a life that He can control. God called Abraham to be His chosen vessel. And from him came Isaac and Jacob, and Jacob became Israel, from whom the Messiah was born. Through the obedience of one man, God accomplished what He wanted. He loved His creation too much to let them be, so he came down and rescued his chosen ones from their own self destruction. God Almighty called Abraham when he was a pagan, deeply involved with the cult of his fathers era. He desperately wanted to get out, but that was his culture and attempting to escape would have left Abraham with nothing. His father owned everything and was in control of Abrahams life. And if he left, where would he have gone? How about you? Are you trying to escape from the One that can give you what world cant give you? The Bible is my inspiration. I took a journey with my Savior and He has guided me to write this book to let others know how much He loves us. God is serious about saving souls, for it is said in John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting Life.

Download or read book Jacob written by Yair Zakovitch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV A powerful hero of the Bible, Jacob is also one of its most complex figures. Bible stories recounting his life often expose his deception, lies, and greed—then, puzzlingly, attempt to justify them. In this book, eminent biblical scholar Yair Zakovitch presents a complete view of the patriarch, first examining Jacob and his life story as presented in the Bible, then also reconstructing the stories that the Bible writers suppressed—tales that were well-known, perhaps, but incompatible with the image of Jacob they wanted to promote. Through a work of extraordinary “literary archaeology,” Zakovitch explores the recesses of literary history, reaching back even to the stage of oral storytelling, to identify sources of Jacob's story that preceded the work of the Genesis writers. The biblical writers were skilled mosaic-makers, Zakovitch shows, and their achievement was to reshape diverse pre-biblical representations of Jacob in support of their emerging new religion and identity. As the author follows Jacob in his wanderings and revelations, his successes, disgraces, and disappointments, he also considers the religious and political environment in which the Bible was written, offering a powerful explication of early Judaism. /div
