Book Is History Past Politics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Is History Past Politics Classic Reprint written by Herbert B. Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is History Past Politics? A brief review of Mr. Freeman's Philosophy of History will serve to set our chosen motto in a'clear light. He regarded Greek politics as the beginning of the world's state life. For him the Achaian League of Greek cities was the historic fore runner of the Federal Union of these United States. For him the real life of ancient history lay not in its separation from the affairs of our own time, but in its close connection with them. (office of the Historical Professor, For him the records of Athenian archons and Roman consuls were essential parts of the same living European history as the records of Venetian doges and English kings. It mattered little to this large-hearted, broad-minded historian of Comparative Politics whether he was writing of free Hellas or free England, of Magna Graecia or the United States. He wrote political articles on the Eastern Question and the Danube provinces for the Manchester Guardian or Saturday Review in the same spirit in which he wrote historical essays. But the latter had been used by all the earlier political writers, and it is hoped that no one will see anything invidious in a mere technical phrase. The reader's considerate judgment is requested upon all de ficiencies and omissions, beyond those which have been compelled by the necessity for condensation. Book American Political History

Download or read book American Political History written by Viola A. Conklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Political History: To the Death of Lincoln Every book, it has been said, should have a preface wherein is offered an apology for presenting another literary venture. The excuse for this volume is the newly awakened interest in our country's past. It owes its origin to a course of parlor lectures which resulted from the remark of a cultured woman who entered actively into the opportunities of her New York life. I have attended, she declared, parlor classes for the study of the great men, the historical epochs, the music, the art, the literature, and even the drama of nearly every land of Europe, but remain lamentably ignorant of the history of my own country. Write a course of lectures upon the political history of the United States and I promise to form a class of women all as ill-in formed as I am, and equally anxious to learn. It was an appeal that demanded compliance, and the interest aroused by the lectures suggested a fuller treatment of the subject in a more permanent form. The thanks of the author are due to Professor E. G. Bourne, of Yale University, for some suggestions made after reading the manuscript. The book is sent forth in the hope that it will meet the demand for a concise ac count of our political history, and that it may prove of value to the man who votes, and to the woman who often influences the voter. Book Politics History Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Politics History Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by John Viscount Morley and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Politics History, Vol. 4 Universities have been boldly ranked by competent historians with trial by jury and parliaments, among leading institutions of the Middle Ages. At any rate in England the power of universities and the public schools that feed them, has been immeasurable in the working of other institutions. They have been main agents in moulding both our secular and ecclesiastical politics. They have worked too often for darkness as well as light. Too often and too long have they been the mirror of stolid prejudice and childish convention; the appendages of old social form and institution, rather than great luminaries dispensing knowledge, and kindling that ardent love of new truth for which youth is the irrevocable season. Power of this high dimension is not likely to be missing in our new universities, though its forms are undergoing rapid revolution. Well was it said, "C'est toujours le beau monde qui gouveme le monde." That is still a great deal more true than people think, even in countries like our own where aristocratic polity has in large degree gone down. But the privileges of the fine world of social class must yield henceforth to the forces that shape temper, judgment, and range of public interest, in educational centres such as yours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latent Impulse in History and Politics In reading over this work before sending it to press, I am affected by some small misgivings. I feel that if I wrote it over again I might write it somewhat differently, for I have not yet arrived at the age when ideas begin to permanently crystallise. Any faults of style and exaggerations of opinion I beg the reader to ascribe to immaturity; any errors in fact to the defect of circumstances, for the book was written in the heart of South Africa. In spite of all, however, I put forward my general theories of latent impulse with good heart, for every subsequent experience I have met with has tended to confirm them. Book The New Politics and Other Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Politics and Other Papers Classic Reprint written by William Garrott Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Politics, and Other Papers The case of the United States is not in point. In a country Where the necessities of life are cheap and the wages of labor high, where a man who has no capital but his legs and arms may expect to become rich by industry and frugality, it is not very decidedly even for the immediate advantage of the poor to plunder the rich; and the punishment of doing so would very speedily follow the offense. But in countries in which the great majority live from hand to mouth, and in which vast masses of wealth have been accumulated by a comparatively small number, the case is widely dif ferent. The immediate want is, at particular seasons, craving, imperious, irresistible. In our own time it has steeled men to the fear of the gallows, and urged them on the point of the bayonet. And, if these men had at their command that gallows, and those bayonets, which now scarcely restrain them, what is to be expected? Nor is this state of things one which can exist only under a bad government. Therefore, the better the government, the greater is the inequality of condi tions; and the greater the inequality of conditions, the stronger are the motives which impel the populace to spoliation. As for America, we appeal to the twentieth century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facts and Suggestions, Biographical, Historical, Financial, and Political, Addressed to the People of the United States Duced the late civil war; that a knowledge of the past may have its preper influence on the future. If, as I believe, the organization of a sectional Northern party, for the purpose of a corrupt, sectional, polit ical control of the government, in violation of the fundamental princi ples of the Constitution, necessarily led to the organization of a Southern party, in defence of the interest and principles which it was the purpose of that Northern party to assail and subvert - then, if the civil war was the consequence of that conflict, the censure should rest on the men, who, by organizing a sectional Northern party for the pur pose of aggression, compelled the counter organization of a Southern party in defence of the rights, interests, and principles thus assailed. Download or read book A True Republic Classic Reprint written by Albert Stickney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A True Republic This book is not the work of a scholar. It concerns mat ters which lie outside of my profession, and which I have never studied with thoroughness. To its writing I have been able to give only such time from day to day as could be taken from professional practice. It is not what I wish I might make it; no doubt it has many faults of which I have no knowledge or suspicion. But it is written for a purpose. Its purpose must be the excuse for its existence. The people of the United States have a new and great problem to solve. That they will solve it I make no doubt. The immense growth of party which we have had in this country is something new in history. I do not think its evils have been duly weighed; nor do I think its causes have been carefully studied. It has been too readily assumed that political parties are desirable things in the State. We speak of the abuses of party government. Is it certain that party government now has its uses? Download or read book Archive Wars written by Rosie Bsheer and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the Saudi Arabian monarchy’s efforts to construct and disseminate a historical narrative to legitimize its rule. The production of history is premised on the selective erasure of certain pasts and the artifacts that stand witness to them. From the elision of archival documents to the demolition of sacred and secular spaces, each act of destruction is also an act of state building. Following the 1991 Gulf War, political elites in Saudi Arabia pursued these dual projects of historical commemoration and state formation with greater fervor to enforce their postwar vision for state, nation, and economy. Seeing Islamist movements as the leading threat to state power, they sought to de-center religion from educational, cultural, and spatial policies. With this book, Rosie Bsheer explores the increasing secularization of the postwar Saudi state and how it manifested in assembling a national archive and reordering urban space in Riyadh and Mecca. The elites’ project was rife with ironies: in Riyadh, they employed world-renowned experts to fashion an imagined history, while at the same time in Mecca they were overseeing the obliteration of a thousand-year-old topography and its replacement with commercial megaprojects. Archive Wars shows how the Saudi state’s response to the challenges of the Gulf War served to historicize a national space, territorialize a national history, and ultimately refract both through new modes of capital accumulation. Praise for Archive Wars “An instant classic. With incredible insight, creativity, and courage, Rosie Bsheer peels away the political and institutional barriers that have so long mystified others seeking to understand Saudi Arabia. Bsheer tells us remarkable new things about the exercise and meaning of power in today’s Saudi Arabia.” —Toby Jones, Rutgers University, author of Desert Kingdom: How Oil and Water Forged Modern Saudi Arabia “There are now two distinct eras in the writing of Saudi Arabian history: before Rosie Bsheer’s Archive Wars and after.” —Robert Vitalis, University of Pennsylvania, author of Oilcraft “Archive Wars explores with conceptual brilliance and historical aplomb the various forms of historical erasure central not just to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but to all modern states. In a finely-grained analysis, Rosie Bsheer rethinks the significance of archives, historicism, capital accumulation, and the remaking of the built environment. A must-read for all historians concerned with the materiality of modern state formation.” —Omnia El Shakry, University of California, Davis, author of The Great Social Laboratory: Subjects of Knowledge in Colonial and Postcolonial Egypt

Book Politics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Politics Classic Reprint written by Charles Austin Beard and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Politics Every science begins by laying hold of some definite and tangible facts, and advances by tracing their myriad relations until they are lost in the great complex of things. So politics starts with the government which, in final analysis, is a determinate number of persons in a political community charged with certain public duties, and it advances to a consideration of the phenomena which condition the organization and operations of the government. It is evident at a casual glance that official performances are not really separable from other actions of the governmental agents themselves or from many of the actions of citizens at large. For instance, the declaration of war against Spain was a political act, but clearly it was only an incident in the sum total of events which led up to the armed conflict. For months before the official proceeding, social forces had been gathering strength, and impinging on the minds of persons charged with transmuting the feeling and will of the nation into the legal state of war. It was by a mere formal process that social realities passed over into political facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
