Book excerpt: Milt Gross (1895-1953), a Bronx-born cartoonist and animator, first found fame in the late 1920s, writing comic strips and newspaper columns in the unmistakable accent of Jewish immigrants. By the end of the 1920s, Gross had become one of the most famous humorists in the United States, his work drawing praise from writers like H. L. Mencken and Constance Roarke, even while some of his Jewish colleagues found Gross’ extreme renderings of Jewish accents to be more crass than comical. Working during the decline of vaudeville and the rise of the newspaper cartoon strip, Gross captured American humor in transition. Gross adapted the sounds of ethnic humor from the stage to the page and developed both a sound and a sensibility that grew out of an intimate knowledge of immigrant life. His parodies of beloved poetry sounded like reading primers set loose on the Lower East Side, while his accounts of Jewish tenement residents echoed with the mistakes and malapropisms born of the immigrant experience. Introduced by an historical essay, Is Diss a System? presents some of the most outstanding and hilarious examples of Jewish dialect humor drawn from the five books Gross published between 1926 and 1928—Nize Baby, De Night in de Front from Chreesmas, Hiawatta, Dunt Esk, and Famous Fimmales—providing a fresh opportunity to look, read, and laugh at this nearly forgotten forefather of American Jewish humor.

Book Nonlinear and Optimal Control Theory

Download or read book Nonlinear and Optimal Control Theory written by Andrei A. Agrachev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-06-24 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectures gathered in this volume present some of the different aspects of Mathematical Control Theory. Adopting the point of view of Geometric Control Theory and of Nonlinear Control Theory, the lectures focus on some aspects of the Optimization and Control of nonlinear, not necessarily smooth, dynamical systems. Specifically, three of the five lectures discuss respectively: logic-based switching control, sliding mode control and the input to the state stability paradigm for the control and stability of nonlinear systems. The remaining two lectures are devoted to Optimal Control: one investigates the connections between Optimal Control Theory, Dynamical Systems and Differential Geometry, while the second presents a very general version, in a non-smooth context, of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. The arguments of the whole volume are self-contained and are directed to everyone working in Control Theory. They offer a sound presentation of the methods employed in the control and optimization of nonlinear dynamical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The LNCS journal Transactions on Rough Sets is devoted to the entire spectrum of rough sets related issues, starting from logical and mathematical foundations, through all aspects of rough set theory and its applications, such as data mining, knowledge discovery, and intelligent information processing, to relations between rough sets and other approaches to uncertainty, vagueness, and incompleteness, such as fuzzy sets and theory of evidence. This first volume of the Transactions on Rough Sets opens with an introductory article by Zdzislaw Pawlak, the originator of rough sets. Nine papers deal with rough set theory and eight are devoted to applications in various domains.

Book The Information Security Dictionary

Download or read book The Information Security Dictionary written by Urs E. Gattiker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Special attention is paid to terms which most often prevent educated readers from understanding journal articles and books in cryptology, security and information systems, and computer science, in addition to applied fields that build on these disciplines, such as system design, security auditing, vulnerability testing, and role-based management. The emphasis throughout The Information Security Dictionary is on concepts, rather than implementations. Since concepts often complicate matters, readers may find a definition makes sense only after it has been illustrated by an example which the author provides in this dictionary." "The Dictionary of Information Security is designed for researchers, students, and practitioners in industry, as well as educated readers interested in the security field."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to Nervous Systems reassess contemporary artists' and critics' engagement with social, political, biological, and other systems as a set of complex and relational parts: an approach commonly known as systems thinking. Demonstrating the continuing relevance of systems aesthetics within contemporary art, the contributors highlight the ways that artists adopt systems thinking to address political, social, and ecological anxieties. They cover a wide range of artists and topics, from the performances of the Argentinian collective the Rosario Group and the grid drawings of Charles Gaines to the video art of Singaporean artist Charles Lim and the mapping of global logistics infrastructures by contemporary artists like Hito Steyerl and Christoph Büchel. Together, the essays offer an expanded understanding of systems aesthetics in ways that affirm its importance beyond technological applications detached from cultural contexts. Contributors.
