Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A wonderful book about figuring out who we are and who we want to be when we grow up. It’s also about being an American—especially a first-generation American.” —Roz Chast This graphic-novel debut from an acclaimed picture book creator is a powerfully moving memoir of the author's experiences with family, religion, and coming of age in the aftermath of World War II, and the childhood struggles and family secrets that shaped her. It’s 1950s New York, and Marisabina Russo is being raised Catholic and attending a Catholic school that she loves—but when she finds out that she’s Jewish by blood, and that her family members are Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, her childhood is thrown into turmoil. To make matters more complicated, her father is out of the picture, her mother is ambitious and demanding, and her older half-brothers have troubles, too. Following the author’s young life into the tumultuous, liberating 1960s, this heartfelt, unexpectedly humorous, and meticulously illustrated graphic-novel memoir explores the childhood burdens of memory and guilt, and Marisabina’s struggle and success in forming an identity entirely her own.

NASA and the space agency have discovered a planet much like Mother Earth and can sustain the life of the Earth. They send six of their best astronauts to explore the new planet and set up a base camp. They then send thirty specially trained people to get a planet, seemingly void of all life except trees, mountains, oceans, and lakes, to ready it for Earth's people. When they get there, they realize that all messages from Earth are so garbled that they cannot understand. The underfunded NASA and space agency have to find ways to get their spaceship space-worthy. In the midst of this, a large international gang decides they want to be on the next ship. They are willing to get those tickets no matter the cost or life. They divide into groups. Each group has a different job to do, like steal, murder, and take control of the space agency's technicians in charge of the countdown procedure. One gang decides to kidnap the president of the United States and hold him hostage for the tickets. They managed to get by the inattentive guards. They got to the Oval Office. As soon as they started to get in the door, the president hit the panic button. They told him to stand up. When he stood up, he had his big gun in hand and started firing; the gang members did the same. The original group on Planet Alverst soon began to think they were not alone on the planet. 11

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a parent guide on a field trip for my daughter’s fifth grade class I had a few moments to chat and daydream with Tiffany, my daughter and two of her friends, J.J. and Kelley. The idea for a story came from that time of imagination. They spoke of the possible mystery in the old ghost town which was the seed to the story combining both current and historical Calico. The need for a little Si-Fi was to connect the two moments across time. The dedication for this book belongs to those three, who gave me a most memorable day at Calico Ghost Town and the following thirteen years of putting it all together.

Book Social Media and Living Well

Download or read book Social Media and Living Well written by Berrin A. Beasley and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is well-being? Is it a stable income, comfortable home, and time shared with family and friends? Is it clean drinking water and freedom from political oppression? Is it finding Aristotle’s Golden Mean by living a life of reason and moderation? Scholars have sought to define well-being for centuries, teasing out nuances among Aristotle’s writings and posing new theories of their own. With each major technological shift this question of well-being arises with new purpose, spurring scholars to re-examine the challenge of living the good life in light of significantly altered conditions. Social media comprise the latest technological shift, and in this book leading scholars in the philosophy and communication disciplines bring together their knowledge and expertise in an attempt to define what well-being means in this perpetually connected environment. From its blog prototype in the mid-to-late-2000s to its microblogging reality of today, users have been both invigorated and perplexed by social media’s seemingly near-instant propagation. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn have been hailed as everything from revolutionary to personally and societally destructive. In an exploration of the role social media play in affecting well-being, whether among individuals or society as a whole, this book offers something unique among academic tomes, an opening essay by an executive in the social media industry who shares his observations of the ways in which social communication conventions have changed since the introduction of social media. His essay is followed by an interdisciplinary academic exploration of the potential contributions and detractions of social media to well-being. Authors investigate social media’s potential influence on friendship, and on individuals’ physical, emotional, social, economic, and political needs. They consider the morality of online deception, how memes and the very structure of the internet inhibit rational social discourse, and how social media facilitate our living a very public life, whether through consent or coercion. Social media networks serve as gathering places for the exchange of information, inspiration, and support, but whether these exchanges are helpful or harmful to well-being is a question whose answer is necessary to living a good life.

Two weeks before Christmas, everyone busily completes the final touches on shopping and planning attire, as well as practicing new dance steps for the dinner finale of the year. In anticipation of Santa’s Christmas Eve ride, excitement seems to be everywhere ... until Uncle Hermes goes missing. The door to Mobil Land has been left ajar, and its interior is in shambles. These are not habits Uncle Hermes would abide. Robye Jax is the son of one of Happenstance’s founders. From early childhood, he has been educated in the discipline of scientific expression, so he recognizes the signs. There is no question: the ice moles are on the move. Every twelve years, the ice moles migrate through the cavern walls to reproduce. Forming into colonies of thousands, they activate in sync and begin a chaotic activity called “whorling.” The snow bobbies are capable of detecting the eminent whorling event, and they’ve been sending Robye frantic messages of warning. Oh, yes, Robye knows why Uncle Hermes has gone missing, and he now must get him back before Christmas is destroyed.
