Book excerpt: Fe-Cu model alloys (0, 0.05, 0.15, 0.30 and 1.00 wt.%Cu) of Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels irradiated by fast neutrons (8.3x1018 n/cm2) at about 100°C are studied by positron annihilation spectroscopy, positron lifetime and coincidence Doppler roadening, in order to analyze the irradiation-induced vacancy-Cu aggregation. We have observed nanovoids (vacancy clusters) whose inner surfaces are covered by Cu atoms in not only high and medium Cu (0.15-1.0 wt.%) alloys but also low Cu (0.05 wt.%) alloys. The typical size of the nanovoids and the fraction of the covering with Cu on the inner surfaces depend on the Cu content. The dissociation of vacancies from the nanovoids by the post-irradiation isochronal annealing at about 400°C leads to the formation of the ultrafine Cu precipitates even for the Fe-0.05wt.%Cu alloy.

Book excerpt: To study the formation of microvoids and Cu precipitates in Fe-Cu mode alloys (0-1.0 wt. % Cu) and A533B reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel, positron lifetime and Vickers microhardness have been measured after fast neutron irradiation to a fluence of 8.3x1018n/cm2 below 150°C. Long positron lifetimes for the Fe-Cu alloys ranging from 300 to 420 ps and 270 to 350 ps for A533B RPV steels have been observed, which show microvoid formation. The long lifetimes in the Fe-Cu alloys depend on the Cu content and thermal aging at 550°C before irradiation. This fact suggests incorporation of irradiation-induced vacancies at Cu atoms and their precipitates leading to suppression of the microvoid formation. The long lifetime component for the Fe-Cu alloys recovers around 350°C, while that for A533B steel recovers around 300°C. To estimate the microvoid sizes, superimposed-atom model calculations of positron lifetimes in microvoids consisting of 1 (V1) to 66 (V66) vacancies have been performed, respectively. Based on these calculations, the formation and post-irradiation annealing behaviour of microvoids are examined.

Book excerpt: The microstructure of Fe-Cu-Ni-P model pressure vessel steels after neutron irradiation and thermal aging has been characterized by atom probe field-ion microscopy and augmented by transmission electron microscopy. High densities of small, roughly spherical or disc shaped copper clusters/precipitates were observed in the neutron irradiated alloys that contained copper. Small spherical phosphorus clusters were observed in the irradiated copper-free alloys, and copper phosphides were observed in a high phosphorus Fe-Cu-Ni-P alloy. None of these clusters/precipitates were observed in the thermally aged materials. The increases in the tensile and yield strengths that were observed after neutron irradiation resulted from these clusters and other lattice defects.

The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field.
