Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iroquois Music and Dance: Ceremonial Arts of Two Seneca Longhouses In the longhouse, they are seated on wooden benches along the wall, but they are grouped according to their ancestral custom, with sexes and moieties separated. Singers occupy a plain wooden bench, but they beat ancient rhythms with instruments that for the most part are of traditional construction, and they sing melodies of um known antiquity. Feet tramp on wooden floors around two iron stoves, but they trace the patterns of rounds that were not brought overseas by the White invader. At this point I shall say no more about the structure of their ceremonialism and its social implications, but shall refer to past descriptions (morgan, 1901 Fenton, 1936, I shall introduce the chief artists and then proceed to the special problem - the songs and the dances, at their own value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midwinter ceremonial—the longest and most complex of the rituals of the Longhouse religion—is examined here in three parts. Following a short cultural history of the Iroquois and a description of the present geographical location of the various longhouses and tribes, Elisabeth Tooker discusses the principles of Iroquois ritualism. The second part of the book is devoted to detailed accounts of the Midwinter ceremonial as it is performed today at six Iroquois longhouses. The third part presents the historical perspective of the ceremony through excerpts from writings of Roman Catholic and Protestant missionaries, captives, travelers, local residents, and anthropologists.

Book Oneida Iroquois Folklore Myth and History

Download or read book Oneida Iroquois Folklore Myth and History written by Anthony Wonderley and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major book to explore uniquely Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and specifically Oneida, components in the Native American oral narrative as it existed around 1900. Drawn largely from early twentieth-century journals by non-Indigenous scholar Hope Emily Allen, much of which was published in Oneida Iroquois Folklore, Myth, and History for the first time. Even as he studies time-honored themes and such stories as the Haudenosaunee account of creation, Anthony Wonderley breaks new ground examining links between legend, history, and everyday life. He pointedly questions how oral traditions are born and develop. Uncovering tales told over the course of 400 years, Wonderley further defines and considers endurance and sequence in oral narratives.. Finally, possible links between Oneida folklore and material culture are explored in discussions of craft works and archaeological artifacts of cultural and symbolic importance. Arguably the most complete study of its kind, the book will appeal to a wide range of professional disciplines from anthropology, history, and folklore to religion and Native American studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six hundred years ago in what would become the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, five Iroquois tribes were locked in bitter warfare. From the ashes of violence, a great Peacemaker was born... Young Odion and his little sister, Tutelo, live in fear that one day Yellowtail Village will be attacked. When that day comes and Odion and Tutelo are marched away as slaves, their only hope is that their parents will rescue them. Their mother, War Chief Koracoo, and their father, Deputy Gonda, think they are tracking an ordinary war party herding captive children to an enemy village. Koracoo and Gonda do not know that Odion and Tutelo have fallen into the hands of a legendary evil: Gannajero the Trader. Known as the Crow, she is a figure out of nightmare, a witch who captures children for her own nefarious purposes. No one can stand against her powers—except perhaps the mysterious Forest Spirit whose tracks have crisscrossed their own throughout their journey. Odion and the other children struggle to survive their brutal captivity. They, too, have seen the Forest Spirit. But like their parents, they can't be sure if the Spirit is a friend—or is in league with Gannajero.... In People of the Longhouse, New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear continue the gripping saga of North America's Forgotten Past. • Author : Beverley Diamond
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9780226144757
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Visions of Sound written by Beverley Diamond and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive study ever undertaken of the musical instruments of native people in Northeastern North America, Visions of Sound focuses on interpretations by elders and consultants from Iroquois, Wabanati, Innuat, and Anishnabek communities. Beverley Diamond, M. Sam Cronk, and Franziska von Rosen present these instruments in a theoretically innovative setting organized around such abstract themes as complementarity, twinness, and relationship. As sources of metaphor—in both sound and image—instruments are interpreted within a framework that regards meaning as "emergent" and that challenges a number of previous ethnographic descriptions. Finally, the association between sound and "motion"—an association that illuminates the unity of music and dance and the life cycles of individual musical instruments—is explored. Featuring over two hundred photographs of instruments, dialogues among the coauthors, numerous interviews with individual music makers, and an appended catalogue of over seven hundred instrument descriptions, this is an important book for all ethnomusicologists and students of Native American culture as well as general readers interested in Native American mythology and religious life.
