Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Life and Humour in Anecdote and Story "Scottish Life and Character in Anecdote and Story" was received with so much favour, alike by press and public, that the author formed the idea of preparing a similar volume illustrative of the wit and humour so characteristic of the Land of the Shamrock. This has now been done, and the author hopes that the book will be as cordially welcomed as was the earlier work. In its preparation many volumes dealing with the subject have been laid under contribution. Newspaper and magazine articles have been drawn upon freely. Of his indebtedness to all these the author here makes due acknowledgment. His endeavour has been to illustrate the main features of Irish character, and as a general rule he has given the anecdotes exactly as he found them - without comment or observation - leaving them to speak for themselves. A notable feature of the book is the series of splendid illustrations in colour. The pictures are reproduced with remarkable fidelity from studies by the late Erskine Nicol, R.S.A., the Scottish painter, who was so eminently successful in his interpretation of Irish life and character. The author hopes that the volume - compiled by a Scot, and illustrated by a Scot - will give pleasure to Irishmen at home and abroad, as well as to many who cannot claim to have been born in the Emerald Isle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Life and Character I hope I have achieved the object which I have had in view in writing this book, namely, to give a clear, full and faithful picture of Irish life and character, illustrated by anecdotes and by my own recollections and experiences during a twelve years' connection with Irish journalism. Hitherto no attempt has been made to do for Ireland what Dean Ramsay, in his ever popular Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character, has done so well for Scotland. There is no complete collection of real, genuine Irish anecdotes which throw light on the character, customs, manners, and ways of thought of the Irish people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lighter Side of Irish Life Mr. W. B. Yeats, who IS A wit AS well as a poet, once found himself called upon to discuss the opinion which the English people have formed of the Irish. They insist, he said, in presenting us with all the good qualities which they do not want for themselves. For instance, they will have it that we are an island of saints. The saying is two-edged, cutting deep into the self-satisfaction of English and Irish alike. For the English, so Mr. Yeats seems to think, admire saintliness only in other peoples, while the Irish, so he went on to ex plain, have a glory thrust on them which they by no means deserve. I am not sure that Mr. Yeats' example is the best he could have chosen. I seldom meet English people who insist much on our saintliness. They are more inclined to credit us with a kind of non-moral Puckishness of nature, a mischievous irresponsibility for which they do not blame us, though they find it inconvenient. But Mr. Yeats' general prin ciple is quite unassailable. The English are al ways most generous in endowing us with ami. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handy Andy: A Tale of Irish Life A few short papers, under the title of this little venture, appeared, at intervals, in Bentley's Miscellany. Frequent inquiries have' been 'made Why Handy Andy was not continued? And, indeed, I myself regretted the abandonment of what I thought a fruitful subject for fun and whimsicality, though, from various causes, needless to particularise here, the papers were discontinued still, from time to time, recurred the question Why Handy Andy Was not continued 'q and the frequency of the demand has produced the supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Irish Life The following Tales, with others, were written many years ago, before I became a resident of Hongkong, and when I had more leisure to devote to literary pursuits than I have since had; they were all, however, written more or less hurriedly in fact, during intervals between the hours of professional duty, usually devoted to exercise and relaxation. All of them, save The Story of an Orange Lodge, appeared from time to time in periodicals of the day. The story named was published in a separate volume in 1864; my object in writing it being, to decry the Orange Confederation, which I then thought, and still consider, a senseless and mischievous organization, alike disgraceful to its members as to Ireland. Conscious as I am of all their faults and 1mper fections, I have reproduced some of these tales in this volume, for private circulation only: they serve to recall younger and happier days, and should their perusal afford the reader a small share of the pleasure their production has given me, I shall be well repaid for my trouble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moy O'brien: A Tale of Irish Life This story (under a nom de plume) first appeared in December, 1878, when it began in the Dublin Weekly Freeman, and continued, until completed in the summer of 1879, when it was republished in America by Messrs. Harper Brothers, of New York. A few words now seem necessary by way of preface, as "Moy O'Brien" was written more than three years before Mr. Gladstone's Land Act of 1881 came into force, and allusions are made to a state of affairs which that and succeeding Acts did much to alter. Tbe Land Act mentioned, in these pages, is Mr. Gladstone's of 1870, an Act so very cruelly crippled in its passage through the House of Lords, that it soon became evident that another was imperatively necessary. 1878 was a memorable year for Ireland. The Political Prisoners (through the intercession of the American Minister) were released, and for the second year in succession the failure of the harvest was bringing dread and disaster to many an Irish home! The harsh landlords had not yet commenced in dreadful earnest the shower of those "sentences of death" which rained thick and fast in the winter of 1879-80, but the fanners were heavily borrowing to pay the claims upon them, and in every direction the outlook was a gloomy one! In Parliament, the Irish National Members were warning the Government of the coming distress, but as usual, a deaf ear was turned to them.
