Book A History of Ireland in International Relations

Download or read book A History of Ireland in International Relations written by Owen McGee and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential new history of the Irish state synthesises existing research with new findings, and adopts fresh perspectives based on neglected European and American debates. It examines the evolution of Irish diplomacy from six consulate officers in the 1920s to sixty ambassadors in the 2010s, and provides an overview of a century of Ireland's diplomatic history that has previously only been examined in a piecemeal fashion. The author's original research findings are focussed particularly on Ireland's struggle for independence in a global context, and his original analysis gives an account of how the economic performance of the Irish state formed a perpetual context for its role in international relations even when this was not a priority of its diplomats. Equal attention is paid to the history of international Irish trade, the operations of bilateral Irish relations, and multilateral diplomacy. It highlights how the Irish state came to find its role in international relations mostly by means of the UN and EU, and analyses this trend in the light of international relations theory and European history.

Book Ireland and Europe 1919 1948

Download or read book Ireland and Europe 1919 1948 written by Dermot Keogh and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1988 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish affairs have been overshadowed by the British presence, and Anglo-Irish relations have usually been seen as central to Irish history. However, the wider continental influence on Ireland has been very considerable and has been unjustly neglected in the past. Dermot Keogh's book rectifies this situation by examining critically the connections between continental Europe and Ireland from the Treaty of Versailles and the influence of European Roman Catholicism to the formal declaration of the Irish republic. Ireland & Europe provides a valuable source for studying Irish political life during the first thirty years of independence. Contents: Introduction; From D-il ...ireann to Saorst-t: Continental Europe and the Development of Irish Diplomacy, 1919-32; De Valera and Foreign Policy Idealism: Apprenticeship in Classical Diplomacy, 1932-36; Ireland and the Popular Fronts, 1936-39; De Valera: Neutrality and the Retreat to Realism, 1939; The Diplomacy of Survival, 1939-40; Europe and the Path of 'Friendly' Neutrality, 1941-45; Epilogue: Ireland and the Diplomacy of Normalcy in Europe, 1945-48; References; Bibliography; Index^R

Book Letters Speeches and Tracts on Irish Affairs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters Speeches and Tracts on Irish Affairs Classic Reprint written by Edmund Burke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters, Speeches and Tracts on Irish Affairs Who now reads Bolingbroke? Burke once asked; and if the same question were at this day asked in respect to Burke himself, what would be the answer? Certainly not that he is read anything like as much as he deserves to be read. We English make far too little use of our prose classics, - far less than the French make of theirs. The place which a writer like Pascal, for instance, fills in French education, and in the minds of cultivated Frenchmen in general, how different is it from the place which Burke fills in our reading and thoughts, and how much larger! Shakespeare and Milton we are all supposed to know something of; but of none of our prose classics, I think, if we leave stories out of the account, such as are the Pilgrim's Progress and the Vicar of Wakefield, are we expected to have a like knowledge. Perhaps an exception is to be made for Bacon's Essays, but even of this I do not feel sure. Our grandfathers were bound to know their Addison, but for us the obligation has ceased; nor is that loss, indeed, a very serious matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unintended Consequences reveals how America’s door closed on legal Irish immigration in the 1960s, and how America’s Irish mounted a counterattack when nation-changing political forces were sweeping the country during the era of civil rights, political assassinations, and the Vietnam War. This book looks at the full historical background to Irish migration across the Atlantic, how it helped shape the young republic, and how the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 brought a near total halt to this westward flow. Nevertheless, the Irish would not be denied and continued to make the journey, no longer into the light of a full and legal American life, but rather into the shadows of an undocumented existence. Successive organisations championed the undocumented Irish, and the fight continues to this day, but this is a new America, where, in recent years, there has been growing hostility to immigrants of every nationality. Ray O’Hanlon has spent over three decades reporting on battles over comprehensive U.S. immigration reform, and Unintended Consequences is the story of the Irish past, its present, and most uncertain future in the ‘land of the free,’ now in the presidency of Joe Biden, a man who fully embraces his Irish immigrant family story. Through Biden, the great Irish of America story continues, and with renewed hope.
