Book The Ants of Southern Australia

Download or read book The Ants of Southern Australia written by Alan Neil Andersen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1991 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ants are among Australia's most familiar and conspicuous insect groups, and play many vital roles in the functioning of our ecosystems. Their activities influence soil structure, accelerate nutrient-cycling and affect plant growth and reproduction. They interact with other arthropods and are prey to a variety of reptiles, birds and mammals. However, despite their importance, little is known about the biology of Australia's exceptionally rich ant fauna, and hundreds of species remain unnamed. Few people are able to identify even the most common genera due to the shortage of popular guides.

Book Venomous Animals and Their Venoms

Download or read book Venomous Animals and Their Venoms written by Wolfgang Bücherl and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venomous Animals and their Venoms, Volume III: Venomous Invertebrates provides a comprehensive presentation of the entire field of the venomous members of the animal kingdom and chemistry and biochemistry of their venoms, including their pharmacological actions and antigenic properties. This volume focuses on venomous invertebrates, such as insects, centipedes, spiders, scorpions, venomous mollusks, and marine animals. Animals that possess at least one or more venom glands and mechanisms for excretion or extrusion of the venom, as well as apparatus with which to inflict wounds or inject the venomous substances are characterized in this book as "actively venomous, while creatures that have venom glands and venom-excreting ducts, but lack adequate apparatus for inflicting wounds or injecting venom, such as toads, frogs, and salamanders are identified as "passively venomous. This publication is a valuable reference for physicians and veterinarians seeking information on the injuries caused by venomous animals.

Book excerpt: From the Arctic to South Africa - one finds them everywhere: Ants. Making up nearly 15% of the entire terrestrial animal biomass, ants are impressive not only in quantitative terms, they also fascinate by their highly organized and complex social system. Their caste system, the division of labor, the origin of altruistic behavior and the complex forms of chemical communication makes them the most interesting group of social organisms and the main subject for sociobiologists. Not least is their ecological importance: Ants are the premier soil turners, channelers of energy and dominatrices of the insect fauna. TOC:The importance of ants.- Classification and origins.- The colony life cycle.- Altruism and the origin of the worker caste.- Colony odor and kin recognition.- Queen numbers and domination.- Communication.- Caste and division of labor.- Social homeostasis and flexibility.- Foraging and territorial strategies.- The organization of species communities.- Symbioses among ant species.- Symbioses with other animals.- Interaction with plants.- The specialized predators.- The army ants.- The fungus growers.- The harvesters.- The weaver ants.- Collecting and culturing ants.- Glossary.- Bibliography.- Index.

Book Echidnas

  • Author : Mervyn Griffiths
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2015-08-26

  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Echidnas written by Mervyn Griffiths and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echidnas, Volume 38 presents the scientific classification of the mammal echidnas. This book describes the characteristics, behavior, reproduction, embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the spiny anteaters, Tachyglossidae. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the natural history, classification, and physical characteristics of echidnas. This text then examines the food intake and digestion mechanisms of echidnas whereby the ground-up insects in the buccal cavity are permeated with saliva secreted by the sublingual, subaxillary, and parotid salivary glands. Other chapters describe various stages in the development of echidna embryos and pouch young. This book discusses as well the primary division of the central nervous system of echidnas, including the prosencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon. The final chapter deals with the similar anatomical characteristics that anteaters exhibit, and describes also their differences in the grinding techniques, forelimb anatomy, and stomach structures. This book is a valuable resource for biologists and zoologists.

Book The Physiology of Insecta

Download or read book The Physiology of Insecta written by Morris Rockstein and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Insecta, Second Edition, Volume III, is part of a multivolume treatise that brings together the known facts, the controversial material, and the many still unsolved and unsettled problems of insect physiology. Since the first edition of this multivolume treatise was published, there has been a notable expansion of scientific endeavor in each of the various aspects of insect physiology. The original three-volume work has now grown to a thoroughly revised six-volume treatise. The book contains seven chapters that focus on the impact of environmental factors on the physiology of insects. The first chapter discusses insect behavior, including habitat selection, reproduction, orientation in space and time, motivation, and learning. This is followed by separate chapters on social life and mutual communication, insect pheromones, migration, mechanisms of locomotion in land and in water, and the physiology of flight.

Book Atlas of Butterflies and Diurnal Moths in the Monsoon Tropics of Northern Australia

Download or read book Atlas of Butterflies and Diurnal Moths in the Monsoon Tropics of Northern Australia written by Michael Braby and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Australia is one of few tropical places left on Earth in which biodiversity—and the ecological processes underpinning that biodiversity—is still relatively intact. However, scientific knowledge of that biodiversity is still in its infancy and the region remains a frontier for biological discovery. The butterfly and diurnal moth assemblages of the area, and their intimate associations with vascular plants (and sometimes ants), exemplify these points. However, the opportunity to fill knowledge gaps is quickly closing: proposals for substantial development and exploitation of Australia’s north will inevitably repeat the ecological devastation that has occurred in temperate southern Australia—loss of species, loss of ecological communities, fragmentation of populations, disruption of healthy ecosystem function and so on—all of which will diminish the value of the natural heritage of the region before it is fully understood and appreciated. Written by several experts in the field, the main purpose of this atlas is to compile a comprehensive inventory of the butterflies and diurnal moths of northern Australia to form the scientific baseline against which the extent and direction of change can be assessed in the future. Such information will also assist in identifying the region’s biological assets, to inform policy and management agencies and to set priorities for biodiversity conservation.
