What causes the iridescence of a hummingbird's throat? of a peacock's train? of a Morpho butterfly's wings? Why do so many brightly colored birds in museum collections soon fade to a dim washed-out hue, while the hummingbird and the peacock retain their brilliance almost indefinitely? Here we touch on the fundamental difference between structural and pigmentary, physical and chemical colors - a difference which is the main theme of this book - and the various ways in which these structural colors are produced in the tissues of living beings. Also unusual are the means and method of illustration and reproduction. Most illustrators desiring colored reproductions of their art paint colored pictures, and then turn these paintings over to the engraver or lithographer, who uses elaborate cameras with filters to separate the colors so that they can be printed in different inks. Instead of relying on mechanical filters, Hilda Simon translates in her mind each color into the percentages of its component colors. She then prepares in black pencil one separation for each of the four or five colors used in her illustrators. The results are astonishing and original. She has captured some of the most elusive colors as no other process can. Book excerpt: Unlike most natural colours that are based on pigment absorption, the striking iridescent and intense colouration of many butterflies, birds or beetles stems from the interaction of light with periodic sub-micrometer surface or volume patterns, so called “photonic structures”. These “structural colours” are increasingly well understood, but they are difficult to create artificially and exploit technologically. In this thesis the field of natural structural colours and biomimetic photonic structures is covered in a wide scope, ranging from plant photonics to theoretical optics. It demonstrates diffractive elements on the petal surfaces of many flowering plant species; these form the basis for the study of the role of structural colours in pollinator attraction. Self-assembly techniques, combined with scale able nanofabrication methods, were used to create complex artificial photonic structures inspired by those found in nature. In particular, the colour effect of a Papilio butterfly was mimicked and, by variation of its design motive, enhanced. All photonic effects described here are underpinned by state-of-the-art model calculations.

Book excerpt: Sagalassos, once the metropolis of the Western Taurus range (Pisidia, Turkey), was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian team directed by K. Lanckoronski. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-Belgian team co-directed by Dr. Stephen Mitchell (University College of Swansea) and by Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven). In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian project and a leading center for interdisciplinary archaeological and archaeometrical research. Due to its altitude, the site is one of the best preserved towns from classical antiquity, with a rich architectural and sculptural tradition dating from the second century BC to the sixth century AD. From early Imperial times until the early Byzantine period a complete range of coarse and red slip wares was produced locally. Excavations are concentrated on the upper and lower agoras to document the political and commercial life in the town and also in the area where a late Hellenistic fountain house, which still functions to date, and a Roman library were discovered. Major efforts are undertaken to restore the excavated monuments in their old glory. Several disciplines integrate the town again within its ancient environment and document the central role which Sagalassos played in the area.
