Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unhappy the Land Liam Kennedy poses fundamental questions about the social and political history of Ireland and challenges cherished notions of a uniquely painful past. Images of tragedy and victimhood are deeply embedded in the national consciousness, yet when the Irish experience is viewed in the larger European context a different perspective emerges. The author’s dissection of some pivotal episodes in Irish history serves to explode commonplace assumptions about oppression, victimhood and a fate said to be comparable ‘only to that of the Jews’. Was the catastrophe of the Great Famine really an Irish Holocaust? Was the Ulster Covenant anything other than a battle-cry for ethnic conflict? Was the Proclamation of the Irish Republic a means of texting terror? And who fears to speak of an Irish War of Independence, shorn of its heroic pretensions? Kennedy argues that the privileging of ‘the gun, the drum and the flag’ above social concerns and individual liberties gave rise to disastrous consequences for generations of Irish people. Ireland might well be a land of heroes, from Cúchulainn to Michael Collins, but it is also worth pondering Bertolt Brecht’s warning: ‘Unhappy the land that is in need of heroes.’

Book A History of the Irish People

Download or read book A History of the Irish People written by Dennis Sommers and published by Writers Club Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Celts, The Vikings, The Normans, The mythical gods, The English, and The Popes have all had an interesting influence upon the history of this very unique island we now call Ireland. As you walk among the ruins of literally hundreds of ancient monasteries, you can feel the historical and spiritual presence of great Saints and Scholars. Many of these monasteries such as Clonmacnoise, Armagh, and Glendalough were in their time among the world leaders of scholastic, spiritual, and social endeavors, with each housing thousands of monks and teachers. As you wander among the hundreds of abandoned castles you can sense the presence of Medieval Kings and Warriors; and, a turbulent past that has dramatically influenced Irish history, and still influences Irish life to this very day, as we shall see. Both of these eras and their monuments, as well as the many elaborate remaining settlements and cemetaries of the various Neolithic peoples (aligned to precise astronomical projections 10,000 years ago), force us to realize there is a substantial amount of research and knowledge yet to be secured regarding this complex and fascinating island. I sincerely hope you enjoy this presentation and find interest in the project!
