In this area, modern Iraq was created by Britain but was virtually kept in a land-locked position. Successive Iraqi rulers have staked their claims on Kuwaiti territory to be able to be free from Iranian hegemony. Soon after the 1958 revolution Qassem claimed Kuwait which led to Baghdad's isolation but was partly repaired by the Arif brothers. The Baathist regime, since 1968, revived Iraqi claims over Kuwait. The author examines the reasons why Kuwaiti rulers were so determined in rejecting Iraqi demands. The Iranian revolution and the eight year war brought Saddam Hussein none of the gains he was expecting. The author believes that just as there is a direct link between the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war, the 1990-91 Kuwaiti crisis would not have erupted but for the same. Soon the UN sanctions began to slowly strangle Iraq. The author reasons that Saddam Hussein and his regime survived since 1991 due to his resourcefulness and his capacity for survival. Although many states began to normalise ties with Iraq, the US was determined to bring down Saddam Hussein and his Baathist regime mainly to control the Iraqi oil. By 2003, the UN sanctions had reduced Iraq from a booming nation to a shadow of its former self. These and many other crucial issues are presented in an impassioned and penetrating analysis. This book has both historical relevance and contemporary significance.

Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes the historical process that culminated in the 1972 nationalization of the Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC) -- a consortium that included four of the world's largest and most powerful corporations. I draw on IPC archives, recently declassified U.S. Government documents, and the Arab press to trace the impact of Iraq's 1958 "Free Officers' Revolution" on IPC interests in Iraq. I show that the Revolution set in motion a process of institutional development that resulted in the complete nationalization of the Iraqi oil industry at a relatively early date, and I emphasize the agency of a particular group of Western-trained Iraqi technical experts in producing this outcome. Moreover, I examine U.S and IPC efforts to counter Iraq's radical movements and offer an original interpretation of the relationship between the American government and the international oil industry. I show that the Iraqi challenge to the IPC undermined the stability of an implicit "corporatist bargain" between the U.S. State Department and the major American oil companies, and that the breakdown of this relationship was part of a larger crisis of American hegemony in the early 1970s. In so doing, I reveal powerful underlying factors that continue to drive the historical encounter between the U.S. and the Middle East.

However, relatively little research exists on the topic. This book provides a timely, empirical analysis of the intersections between extractive industries, oil imaginaries, and identity formation in one of the most coveted energy frontiers worldwide. It shines a light on relations between the global production networks of petro-capitalism and extractive localities. Besides the strained federal relationship with the Iraqi central government, the transformative effects the petroleum industry has had on Kurdish society are also explored in depth. Moreover, the book fills a gap in the literature on Kurdish Studies, which has devoted scant attention to energy-related issues in the re-imagination of Kurdish self-determination. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the extractive industries, energy studies, conflict studies, Middle Eastern politics, and political ecology.
