Book Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony Classic Reprint written by Thomas Franklin Waters and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony I have tried to tell, accurately but in readable fashion, the Story of the builders of our Town: their homes and home life, their employments, their Sabbath keeping, their love of learning, their administration of Town affairs, their sterndelusions, and their heroism, in War and in resistance to Tyranny. The seventeenth century was a brilliant and thrilling period in Ipswich history, and it seemed best to me to consider it some what at length, and to close my historical study with the end Of that century rather than to attempt a briefer summary of the complete history of the Town. If this work finds favor, I shall begin at once to gather material for another volume, in which the historical and topographical studies will be carried on to completion. NO attempt has been made to construct a genealogical appendix. The magnitude Of the undertaking, properly carried out, seemed too great, and the forthcoming publication of the Vital statistics'of the Town, by the Essex Institute, renders it unnecessary. In Part Two, however, a topographical study has been made, from the beginning to the present generation. Nearly two thousand citations from the County Records have been carefully verified, and the likelihood of error has been reduced to the lowest possible degree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Vol. 2: A History of the Town From 1700 to 1917 The first volume of Ipswich history, entitled Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1633-1700, was published in 1905. It was received with so much favor that I have been encouraged to continue my study and research to the present day. To the end that the book may be interesting to many readers, beside students of history, and may be something more than a series of disconnected annals, the topical method, followed in the first volume, has been continued. I have endeavored to portray as graphically as possible the changing life of the community in successive periods, in the common course of Town affairs and in critical periods of Colonial and National existence, and have not hesitated to make frequent excursions into the contemporaneous history of other towns to secure illustrative material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prisoners of Fortune: A Tale of the Massachusetts Bay Colony On this day, the roth of August in the year of grace 1757, it being my sixtieth birthday and a hot and sticky one and the flies bothering me so that there was no comfort in dozing in my chair, after my light noon meal of pork and beans and cheese and meat pie, with a mug of cider and a pipe thereafter, I sat up of a sudden, to slap and to light my pipe over again; and thereupon formed, on the spur of the moment, an extraordinary resolution. Now I am fond of cogitating over the curious relation that events of importance in our lives bear to small and even silly ones, and how the lesser may be progenitor of the greater; and so I have often wondered since how much the biting of the flies had to do with the formation of this resolution. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... INDEX. Some ancient but familiar names, as Scott's Lane and Brook Street, are retained in the Index to secure uniformity with the diagrams, the language of old deeds, and the common usage of the book. The identification of the grantors and grantees in many conveyances is very difficult, if not impossible. DEGREES This is due to the absence of middle names, the constant recurrence of the same Christian name through generations, and the large number of individuals who bore the surname of some of the old Ipswich families. Dates have been inserted frequently, as the only basis of classification and identification, but a large measure of uncertainty still remains. in the chapter on The Body Politic, several contemporaneous lists were given: of the freemen, or those entitled to full franchise, of the commoners, who had a vote only in questions concerning the common lands, and of residents. In the Index, the voters and commoners are always designated, and the words " resident in 1678 " indicate that the persons to whose names this is appended are mentioned only in the third list, and had, therefore, no civic privilege. Abbe, Joseph, bought lot of Thomas Perrin, 452; grant of lot on river bank, 457, 458, 459; garden lot, 463. Abbey, Thomas, in Major Applet on's Co., 199. Abbot, Daniel, execution on Newmarch property, 404. Abbott, Arthur, his wife fined for wear- ing finery, 42, 280; a voter in Town affairs, 92; bought house of George Dutch, 322; house of Benjamin Dutch, 332: Samuel Waite house, 341; land of Perkins, 402; house of Isaac Fitts, 457. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Puritan Age and Rule in the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay, 1629-1685 The Preface of a book is usually that part of it which is the last to be written, and the first to be read. The author makes use of it to supply any possible oversight in his pages in the statement of his purpose, or to anticipate any misapprehension of it. The reader turns to it with a view to find in it a brief and comprehensive exposition of the design of the book, and the reason why it has been written and put forth. A few words here may answer both these intents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Life of John Winthrop the Younger: Founder of Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1633 At his suggestion, also, I have taken pains to provide suitable illustrations. The frontispiece is an unusually successful repro duction of the well-known but much discolored portrait of John Winthrop, J r., in early life, -the only authentic likeness of him at any period, and still in possession of a branch of his descend ants. The facsimiles of manuscripts relating to Ipswich are taken from originals given by me a number of years ago to the Essex Institute. Two of them are reproduced in full size, the others have been a little reduced to avoid folding. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
