Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iphigenia At Aulis Euripides - Euripides turned to playwriting at a young age, achieving his first victory in the dramatic competitions of the Athenian City Dionysia in 441 b.c.e. He would be awarded this honor three more times in his life, and once more posthumously. Together with Aeschylus and Sophocles, Euripides would provide the canon of Greek tragedy and thereby lay the foundation of Western theatre. Eighteen of Euripides' ninety-two works remain today, making his the largest extant collection of work by an ancient playwright. "Iphigenia at Aulis" is part of a trilogy which is the last remaining work of Euripides. It was produced a year after his death by his son or nephew, and received first place at the Athenian City Dionysia. The story takes place before and during the Trojan War, when Agamemnon must decide whether or not to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, for the sake of Troy's honor. It explores timeless themes of honor, sacrifice, hypocrisy and courage.

Book excerpt: The 17th century dramatist Jean Racine was considered, along with Moliere and Corneille, as one of the three great playwrights of his era. The quality of Racine's poetry has been described as possibly his most important contribution to French literature and his use of the alexandrine poetic line is one of the best examples of such use noted for its harmony, simplicity and elegance. While critics over the centuries have debated the worth of Jean Racine, at present, he is widely considered a literary genius of revolutionary proportions. In this volume of Racine's plays we find "Iphigenia," the ninth of twelve plays by the author. After a series of historical dramas Racine choose to return to mythological subject matter for his ninth play. As Agamemnon, King of the Greeks, prepares his navy to attack Troy, the gods quell the winds for their journey and demand the sacrifice of Iphigenia, Agamemnon's daughter. Based in part on Euripides' "Iphigenia in Aulis," Racine departs somewhat by substituting an alternative dramatic solution for the ending.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two versions of Euripides' masterpiece in a new verse translation by Andy Hinds, with Martine Cuypers. The first version of Iphigenia in Aulis in this volume is a translation of the complete text as it has come down to us via the only surviving manuscript – a highly corrupt text containing numerous interpolations by hands other than Euripides. The second, shorter version offers a tried and tested, more performable 'stage' version of the play. The translation is the result of a close collaboration between theatre director and playwright, Andy Hinds (author of Acting Shakespeare's Language), and Classics scholar, Dr. Martine Cuypers (Trinity College, Dublin). Whilst preserving a scholarly fidelity to the original Greek, the translation is written in a clear and energetic verse, designed to be as 'performable' in the theatre, as it is 'readable' in the home or study. It will be of equal interest and use, therefore, to teachers, students and academics, to actors and directors, and to the general reader. Companion Volume Iphigenia in Aulis is released as a companion volume to Hinds' translation of The Oresteia. Iphigenia represents Euripides' version of a key episode in the great saga, The Fall of the House of Atreus, while The Oresteia relates Aeschylus' version of the continuation and conclusion of the saga.

Book excerpt: A brilliant retelling of an ancient myth, The Songs of the Kings offers up a different narrative of the Trojan War, one devoid of honor, wherein the mission to rescue Helen is a pretext for plundering Troy of its treasures. As the ships of the Greek fleet find themselves stalled in the straits at Aulis, waiting vainly for the gods to deliver more favorable winds, Odysseus cynically advances a call for the sacrifice of Agamemnon’s daughter, Calchas the diviner interprets events for the reader, and a Homer-like figure called the Singer is persuaded to proclaim a tale of a just war to hide the corrupt motivations of those in power. But couched within the Singer’s spin is a message at once timely and timeless: “There is always another story. But it is the stories told by the strong, the songs of kings, that are believed in the end.”
