Book Grammar Lessons

Download or read book Grammar Lessons written by Michele Morano and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the thirteen personal essays in Grammar Lessons, Michele Morano connects the rules of grammar to the stories we tell to help us understand our worlds. Living and traveling in Spain during a year of teaching English to university students, she learned to translate and interpret her past and present worlds—to study the surprising moments of communication—as a way to make sense of language and meaning, longing and memory. Morano focuses first on her year of living in Oviedo, in the early 1990s, a time spent immersing herself in a new culture and language while working through the relationship she had left behind with an emotionally dependent and suicidal man. Next, after subsequent trips to Spain, she explores the ways that travel sparks us to reconsider our personal histories in the context of larger historical legacies. Finally, she turns to the aftereffects of travel, to the constant negotiations involved in retelling and understanding the stories of our lives. Throughout she details one woman’s journey through vocabulary and verb tense toward a greater sense of her place in the world. Grammar Lessons illustrates the difficulty and delight, humor and humility of living in a new language and of carrying that pivotal experience forward. Michele Morano’s beautifully constructed essays reveal the many grammars and many voices that we collect, and learn from, as we travel.

Book Educating Iowa s English Language Learners ELLs

Download or read book Educating Iowa s English Language Learners ELLs written by Iowa State Department. of Education, Des Moines and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook for Iowa school districts was first published many years ago. Since that time, several significant sociopolitical and educational changes have occurred. For example, there has been an increase in the number of languages and cultures represented both in Iowa and in the political arenas of the nation. Immigrants and refugees from impoverished or war-torn homelands have come to this nation seeking the American Dream. Balances among minority group populations have shifted, and even greater shifts are likely in the future. In both society and educational institutions, a better understanding of the implications of the linguistic and cultural differences in learners who participate in available programs have been acquired. More than ever is known about language acquisition, cultural change, competencies, testing, affective states of the learner, and individual assessments. The changes in this handbook attempt to reflect these new understandings. The writers seek to give Iowa educators a picture of the unique needs of English language learners (ELLs) and to offer a guide for providing equal access to the quality education available in the state. The handbook will primarily benefit those responsible for designing and implementing programs in local school districts. This handbook is organized into the following chapters: (1) Legal and Educational Rationale; (2) Funding Sources; (3) Procedures; (4) Educational Programs; (5) Involving Parents and Community; and (6) Program Evaluation. The following are appended: (1) Bibliography of Language Tests for ELLs; (2) Enrollment Status Descriptors; (3) List of Resource Agencies, Centers, and Organizations; (4) Publishers of Bilingual/ESL/Multicultural/Multilingual Materials; (5) Print and Online Resource List; (6) Limited English Proficiency Laws and Rules; and (7) English Language Learners (ELL) District/Building Self-Study Guide. (Contains 3 tables, 1 chart, and 1 footnote.).

Book Congotronic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shane Book
  • Publisher : University of Iowa Press
  • Release : 2014-09
  • ISBN : 1609383079
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Congotronic written by Shane Book and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2014-09 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once original, strange, funny, and unnerving, Shane Book’s Congotronic takes the reader into unstable territory, where multiple layers of voice, diction, and music collide. Some of these poems have the sparse directness of a kind of bleak prayer; others mingle the earthbound rhythms of hip-hop with the will-to-transcendence of high Romanticism. Harnessing techniques of the cinematic and audio arts, Book’s poems splice, sample, collage, and jump-cut language from an array of sources, including slave narratives, Western philosophy, hip hop lyrics, and the diaries of plantation owners. In fusing disparate texts, each poem in this collection attempts to create a community in language. Thus, at its core, the project is utopic—or more precisely, to borrow from Duke Ellington—the project is “blutopic.” The book’s anchoring series contains an apocryphal narrative grounded in the journey of the Middle Passage and an older mythic history from the West African epic of Sundiata. Here elements of Afrofuturism coagulate with an R&B grin as social forces challenge a sense of personhood, prompting free-jazz inflected conversations between the pieces of a shattered, polyvocal self. Here is a world poet of the Sonic Global South sheathed in a Northern Hemispheric glow suit, high “on Coltrane, on Zeus” but also on the old and new schools of Descartes, M.I.A., Cecil Taylor, Gilbert Ryle, Freud, and Jay Z, among others—or as one poem puts it, the “aural truths.”
