Book Ionospheric Modification An Initial Report on Artificially Created Equatorial Spread F

Download or read book Ionospheric Modification An Initial Report on Artificially Created Equatorial Spread F written by Sidney L. Ossakow and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical simulation code for investigating equatorial Spread F in the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor regime is utilized to follow the evolution of artificial plasma density depletions injected into the bottomside nighttime equatorial F region. The 70 km diameter hole rapidly rises and steepens, forming plasma density enhancements at altitudes below the rising hole. The distribution of enhancements and depletions is similar to natural equatorial Spread F phenomena, except it occurs on a much faster time scale. (Author).

Book Space Physics and Aeronomy Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications

Download or read book Space Physics and Aeronomy Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications written by Chao Huang and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of global ionospheric research from the polar caps to equatorial regions It's more than a century since scientists first identified the ionosphere, the layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionized by solar and cosmic radiation. Our understanding of this dynamic part of the near-Earth space environment has greatly advanced in recent years thanks to new observational technologies, improved numerical models, and powerful computing capabilities. Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of historic developments, recent advances, and future directions in ionospheric research. Volume highlights include: Behavior of the ionosphere in different regions from the poles to the equator Distinct characteristics of the high-, mid-, and low-latitude ionosphere Observational results from ground- and space-based instruments Ionospheric impacts on radio signals and satellite operations How earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth cause disturbances in the ionosphere The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Book Nonlinear Equatorial Spread F

Download or read book Nonlinear Equatorial Spread F written by S. T. Zalesak and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by the observations of large horizontal scale length equatorial spread F 'bubbles', we have performed numerical simulations of the nonlinear evolution of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the nighttime equatorial ionosphere, using large horizontal scale length initial perturbations. The calculations were performed using a new, improved numerical code which utilizes the recently developed, fully multidimensional flux-corrected transport (FCT) techniques. We find that large horizontal scale initial perturbations evolve nonlinearly into equally large horizontal scale spread F bubbles, on a time scale as fast as that of the corresponding small horizontal scale length perturbations previously used. Further, we find the level of plasma depletion inside the large scale bubbles to be appreciably higher than that of the smaller scale bubbles, approaching 100%, in substantial agreement with the observations. This level of depletion is due to the fact that the plasma comprising the large scale bubbles has its origin at much lower altitudes than that comprising the smaller scale bubbles. Analysis of the polarization electric fields produced by the vertically aligned ionospheric irregularities show this effect to be due to fringe fields similar in structure to those produced at the edge of a parallel plate capacitor.
