Book Edge Ion Heating and Parametric Decay During Injection of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency Power on the Alcator C Mod Tokamak

Download or read book Edge Ion Heating and Parametric Decay During Injection of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency Power on the Alcator C Mod Tokamak written by Jon Christian Rost and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A population of suprathermal ions has been observed in the scrape-off layer during injection of power in the ion cyclotron frequency range on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. These ions generated energetic neutrals measured with a charge-exchange neutral particle analyzer. In the hydrogen minority heating regime, fast particles were generated only when the injected power was above 500kW. Fast particles were observed at a low level of injected power when the frequency was a multiple of the ion cyclotron frequency in the scrape-off layer. The power deposited in the edge was always less than a few percent of the injected power and did not increase impurity levels. The theoretical threshold of parametric decay instabilities for decay of the pump wave in the antenna near field into an ion Bernstein wave and an ion cyclotron quasimode matches the observed threshold for fast ion production under a variety of conditions.

Book Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies Mode Conversion Electron Heating in Deuterium hydrogen Plasmas in the Alcator C Mod Tokamak

Download or read book Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies Mode Conversion Electron Heating in Deuterium hydrogen Plasmas in the Alcator C Mod Tokamak written by Yijun Lin and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Localized direct electron heating by mode-converted ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) waves in D(H) tokamak plasmas has been clearly observed for the first time in Alcator C-Mod. Both on- and off-axis (high field side) mode conversion electron heating (MCEH) have been observed. The MCEH profile was obtained from a break in slope analysis of electron temperature signals in the presence of rf (radio frequency) shut-off. The temperature was measured by a 32-channel high spatial resolution (7 mm) 2nd harmonic heterodyne electron cyclotron emission (ECE) system. The experimental profiles were compared with the predictions from a toroidal full-wave ICRF code TORIC. Using the hydrogen concentration measured by a high-resolution optical spectrometer, TORIC predictions were shown qualitatively in agreement with the experimental results for both on- and off-axis MC cases. From the simulations, the electron heating from mode converted ion cyclotron wave (ICW) and ion Bernstein wave (IBW) is examined.

Book ICRF Heating and Wave Generation in the ATC Tokamak Part 1

Download or read book ICRF Heating and Wave Generation in the ATC Tokamak Part 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results and their theoretical interpretations of rf heating experiments in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies are presented. The presentation is in two parts, with this part describing the experimental facilities and characteristics of fast compressional Alfven waves in the tokamak, and a subsequent paper which will deal with the pricipal heating results. It is shown that a simple coupling structure which consists essentially of a semi-circular metal strip and a pair of bumper limiters is sufficient to efficiently couple rf power to the plasma. The major part of the coupled power is radiated as the fast wave, and there is no evidence that parasitic loading, if any, accounts for a significant amount of the power. A coupling efficiency (net coupled power/incident power) in excess of 90% is routinely obtained.

Book Ion Heating in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies in the Wisconsin Tokapole II

Download or read book Ion Heating in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies in the Wisconsin Tokapole II written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion temperatures of 75 eV, a doubling of the ohmic heating temperature in a normal discharge, have been achieved using the fast magnetosonic wave heating at the second, third, and fourth harmonics of the cyclotron frequency in a single component hydrogen plasma. The wave launching structure is a single turn, shielded, insulated loop which constitutes the inductor of the rf source tank circuit. Power levels of 800 kW have been applied to the plasma for periods of up to 1.1 milliseconds. Good agreement has been found between theory and experiment for loading and wave propagation in the plasma for m = 0 and m = +1 modes. Eigenmodes have been observed by peaking of both the rf wave amplitude and the loading of the oscillator, as well as by oscillator frequency shifts imposed by their passage.
