Book excerpt: Dillon J. Carroll’s Invisible Wounds examines the effects of military service, particularly combat, on the psyches and emotional well-being of Civil War soldiers—Black and white, North and South. Soldiers faced harsh military discipline, arduous marches, poor rations, debilitating diseases, and the terror of battle, all of which took a severe psychological toll. While mental collapses sometimes occurred during the war, the emotional damage soldiers incurred more often became apparent in the postwar years, when it manifested itself in disturbing and self-destructive behavior. Carroll explores the dynamic between the families of mentally ill veterans and the superintendents of insane asylums, as well as between those superintendents and doctors in the nascent field of neurology, who increasingly believed the central nervous system or cultural and social factors caused mental illness. Invisible Wounds is a sweeping reevaluation of the mental damage inflicted by the nation’s most tragic conflict.

This book takes a look at psychosis, and contends that although the delusions and hallucinations of the psychotic person are misguided and confused, they are understandable when viewed in the context of a person's life. Using real life examples, Capps covers the prevalence of psychotic illness; the long-range effects of deinstitutionalization on mentally ill persons, their families, and their communities; family members' responses to their mentally ill relative; rehabilitation and prevention approaches and methods; the nature of delusions and hallucinations; the delusional belief that one is someone else; and the realization of mental stability.

Dan Levy is famous at Harvard for his inclusive learning environment, which leaves students feeling not just confident about using statistics in the real world, but also seen, heard and loved. Written from the perspective of the student, the book is a fly-on-the-wall case study of the course. It argues that the learning environment is composed of invisible bonds between students and teacher, and considers how he strengthens those bonds and uses them to maximise learning. Book Portraits of the Insane

Download or read book Portraits of the Insane written by Robert Snell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1820s, in the gloomy aftermath of the 1789 Revolution and the Napoleonic wars, the French Romantic painter Theodore Gericault (1791-1824) made five portraits of patients in an asylum or clinic. No depictions of madness before or since can compare with them for humanity, straightforwardness and immediacy. The portraits challenge us to find responses in ourselves to the face and the embodied mysteries of the other person, and to our own internal (unsconscious, disavowed) otherness: in this sense, Gericault was a "painter-analyst". The challenge could not be more urgent, in our world of suspicion of the stranger, and of the medicalisation of madness. The book sketches the history of this last process, from the Enlightenment through to the Revolution and its public health policies, to the birth of the asylum in its interface with the penal system. But there was also a new medico-philosophical conviction that the mad were never wholly mad, and their suffering and disturbance might best be addressed through relationship and speech.

Book Horror and Science Fiction Films IV

Download or read book Horror and Science Fiction Films IV written by Donald C. Willis and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth title in a unique series that combines reference and analytical qualities in chronicling the horror and science fiction genres, Horror and Science Fiction Films IV brings the earlier three volumes in the series up to date, concentrating on the period from 1984-1994, as well as updating entries from the previous volumes and adding newly-discovered titles from 1900-1983. Entries in the main list include credits, cast, synopsis, and annotation. The introduction lists 1995 releases in the genres and 1996 releases through the summer, cites the more memorable films in the genres for both the current period and 1900-1984, and serves as an index to key titles in the main list, including long-lost titles such as the -obscure silent Were Tiger and the 1931 The Phantom. Willis includes many films from around the world that are not found in any other English-language film reference work. One appendix provides thumbnail descriptions of problem and peripheral films; another updates entries in the first three books with alternate titles; and a third appendix serves as an index to the approximately 7,000 films listed in the first three volumes in the series as well as in the current volume, thus bringing the total number of films covered in this series to roughly 11,000 titles.
