Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After-school advocates and practitioners face a seemingly continual struggle for adequate funding. While there have been successes, budgets have tightened at all levels of government, and advocates must be prepared to demonstrate that after-school programs are a worthy investment. This report highlights benefits of these programs by pointing out that a struggling student is not the sole bearer of the cost of academic difficulty: remedial education, absenteeism, grade repetition, drop-outs, crime, drug use, teen pregnancy and income lost are some of the costs taxpayers bear when a young person does not succeed in school. These costs start tallying when school begins and last for a lifetime. As manufacturing jobs dwindle, the next generation of workers will need more education and advanced skills in order to succeed as productive members of the workforce. If future workers come out the end of the education pipeline unable to meet these standards, businesses bear the cost of retraining. Studies and evaluations continue to demonstrate that after-school programs are cost-effective and save money by addressing risky and expensive (for society) behaviors by keeping youth busy during the hours they are most likely to get into trouble, and providing young people with access to caring adults who provide the support they need to succeed, whether in homework help or learning how to say no to drugs. Children and youth who regularly attend quality after-school programs have better grades and conduct in school, are more likely to graduate, and have lower incidences of drug-use, violence and pregnancy. The flexibility of after-school programs means that they are uniquely able to tailor themselves to what their community needs. Beyond the bottom line, many benefits to individual students, teachers, schools and communities cannot be assigned a dollar value. Time to find a passion or a skill, better self-esteem, teamwork skills, confidence, a greater sense of curiosity, a lifelong love of learning: society will reap the benefits of making an investment to create future generations of scientists, teachers, leaders, artists and thoughtful citizens. Quality after-school programs, like schools themselves, need quality staff, effective curricula and community collaboration in order to succeed. Federal, state and local governments need to put their weight behind developing policies that support staff and curriculum development and regular evaluation so programs can best serve today's youth and tomorrow's adult citizens. Book Roadmap to Afterschool for All

Download or read book Roadmap to Afterschool for All written by Alison Earle and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality afterschool programs are improving and transforming the lives of children and youth across the nation. Research shows that afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working parents. They give children opportunities to see new worlds, put school lessons into practice, discover their talents and explore career paths, and help them develop the academic, social and professional skills they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy. With the help of researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Afterschool Alliance initiated the "Roadmap to Afterschool for All"--a scientific study that for the first time assesses the current investment in afterschool programs from the public sector, parents, foundations and businesses, and estimates the additional investment needed from each sector to provide quality afterschool programs for all children. This survey-based research project was designed to meet the following goals: (1) Better understand current funding for afterschool; (2) Create a funding roadmap that will help sustain and expand quality afterschool programs; (3) Inform a long-term legislative agenda at every level; and (4) Create real benchmarks for measuring progress. Fifty school districts from which to interview afterschool program staff were randomly selected from a list of school districts available from the National Center for Education Statistics. Findings reveal that parents are paying the lion's share of afterschool costs. This is true even among programs serving high poverty children. Greater investment from all sectors is needed to help ensure that all children and especially the neediest children are able to access quality, affordable afterschool programs--programs that keep kids safe, inspire learning and help working families. Appendixes include: (1) Detailed Sampling Methodology; and (2) List of Districts. (Contains 1 table and 1 footnote.).

Book Afterschool Programs Strengthen Communities Afterschool Alert Issue Brief

Download or read book Afterschool Programs Strengthen Communities Afterschool Alert Issue Brief written by Afterschool Alliance, Washington, DC. and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some say America's attention to community is in decline. As people work longer hours, endure longer commutes, and have less time to socialize and join community organizations, they are not getting to know their neighbors and communities. Schools exist in a vacuum, having little or no association with the surrounding neighborhood, and many neighborhoods lack safe places for youth to gather and socialize without parents being concerned about violence, drug use, abduction, traffic or other dangers. After school programs are uniquely suited to fill this void and become America's new neighborhood, a safe space for both kids and parents to gather to learn, play and connect. By giving schools, community based organizations and communities a sound investment in one another, after school programs have the power to reduce crime, increase safety, bring neighbors together, and foster community pride and ownership. Successful after school programs help young people become productive adults, get parents involved in their children's education, produce safer streets, address community needs, foster civic responsibility, strengthen community groups and rally residents around a common goal. In short, after school programs make communities safer and stronger. Book Estimating Supply and Demand for Afterschool Programs

Download or read book Estimating Supply and Demand for Afterschool Programs written by Elisabeth Wright and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In communities all over the country, afterschool programs play an important role in keeping children and youth safe, providing them with important learning opportunities, and helping them become successful adults. Federal, state, local, and private investments in afterschool programs have grown in recent years due both to widespread public support and a better understanding of the crucial role such programs play in serving children and youth and the communities in which they live. Afterschool programs come in many different shapes and sizes, from tutoring to drop-in sports leagues to more comprehensive programs that provide an array of activities for children as well as their families. Positive youth development, prevention, child care, education, skills development, mentoring?whatever the program approach, a growing body of evidence points to the important role quality afterschool programs play in helping children succeed both academically and socially. Despite the growth in attention and funding for afterschool programs, many questions remain about availability and accessibility. As policymakers consider funding for afterschool programs, they often want to know more about the current need for these services?especially among low-income families. Among the questions policymakers ask are: What programs are currently out there? How many children are being served? How many children would like to be in afterschool programs but for one reason or another are not? What resources currently support existing programs, and are they sufficient? This tool draws upon those experiences to outline concrete steps in the process of estimating supply and demand. It provides examples of states and communities that have undertaken this task, outlines a five-step process for planning and collecting data, and offers guidance and lessons learned from the field.

  • Pages : 4 pages

Download or read book Afterschool Programs written by Afterschool Alliance, Washington, DC. and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investing in afterschool programs helps children of rural communities break out of the cycle of poverty and creates opportunities for at-risk youth. In areas where prospects and resources are limited, afterschool programs are often the only source of supplemental enrichment in literacy, nutrition education, technology, and preparation for college entrance exams. Afterschool programs offer an effective and affordable way of overcoming obstacles confronting rural communities and helping children realize their full potential. Twenty-one percent of the nation's children attend public schools in rural areas. Children attending rural schools have the lowest median per-student funding for afterschool programs under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers federal grants program, as compared to their urban and suburban counterparts. Additionally, rural schools have fewer financial resources--largely as a result of diminished local property tax bases and inequitable distributions of state funds. This disparity underscores the fact that children living in persistently poor rural America need greater attention. This issue brief highlights several afterschool programs that have successfully addressed rural community needs. (Contains 22 endnotes.).

Book excerpt: The authors survey the current afterschool landscape and bring to light important issues and practices within the field, explore the challenges and opportunities facing afterschool education programs, and point to future directions for these burgeoning educational ventures. Afterschool education has grown in recent years into a vast and diverse enterprise. In the United States, young people spend almost a third of their organized time (including school hours) in afterschool and summer programs. Yet there is little clear and conclusive research on afterschool programs—research that would help guide the practice of existing afterschool programs and establish guidelines for the creation of new programs. An indispensable guide for practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and parents, Afterschool Education will serve as the cornerstone for all future accounts of and proposals for this crucial educational field.

Book A Practical Guide to the Science and Practice of Afterschool Programming

Download or read book A Practical Guide to the Science and Practice of Afterschool Programming written by Joseph L. Mahoney and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Closing the gap between scientific research on afterschool programming and the practices occurring in these settings is the goal of this volume. Both sources of knowledge are critical to developing the afterschool workforce’s ability to provide high-quality programming. On the one hand, this means afterschool staff should not work with young people until they have been adequately prepared—which includes training in evidence-based practices—and properly supervised. On the other hand, it requires that scientists understand and study those aspects of afterschool programming most relevant to the needs of practitioners. This volume includes perspectives from the afterschool workforce, scientists who discuss the current research, and the practitioners who know how afterschool programs operate in practice. This is the 144th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

Book After School Programs to Promote Child and Adolescent Development

Download or read book After School Programs to Promote Child and Adolescent Development written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-10-12 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the presentations and discussion at a workshop entitled Opportunities to Promote Child and Adolescent Development During the After-School Hours, convened on October 21, 1999. The workshop was organized by the Board on Children, Youth, and Families and its Forum on Adolescence of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine, with funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. This workshop brought together policy makers, researchers, and practitioners to examine research on the developmental needs of children and adolescentsâ€"ages 5 to 14 yearsâ€"and the types of after-school programs designed to promote the health and development of these young people. Intended to provide a forum for discussion among the various stakeholders, the workshop did not generate conclusions about the types of programs that are most effective, nor did it generate specific recommendations about after-school programs or promote a particular approach. The workshop coincided with release of the Packard Foundation's fall 1999 issue of The Future of Children, entitled "When School Is Out." Focusing on after-school programs, the journal provided some context for the workshop, providing a backdrop for discussing the importance of after-school programs, the types of programs that exist across the country, and the policy climate that surrounds after-school programs. This report summarizes the workshop.

Book Community Programs to Promote Youth Development

Download or read book Community Programs to Promote Youth Development written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-12 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After-school programs, scout groups, community service activities, religious youth groups, and other community-based activities have long been thought to play a key role in the lives of adolescents. But what do we know about the role of such programs for today's adolescents? How can we ensure that programs are designed to successfully meet young people's developmental needs and help them become healthy, happy, and productive adults? Community Programs to Promote Youth Development explores these questions, focusing on essential elements of adolescent well-being and healthy development. It offers recommendations for policy, practice, and research to ensure that programs are well designed to meet young people's developmental needs. The book also discusses the features of programs that can contribute to a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. It examines what we know about the current landscape of youth development programs for America's youth, as well as how these programs are meeting their diverse needs. Recognizing the importance of adolescence as a period of transition to adulthood, Community Programs to Promote Youth Development offers authoritative guidance to policy makers, practitioners, researchers, and other key stakeholders on the role of youth development programs to promote the healthy development and well-being of the nation's youth.
