Book Investigations and Tests to Determine Hydrodynamic Forces and Moments on Ships Moored in a Current Volume 2 Phase 1

Download or read book Investigations and Tests to Determine Hydrodynamic Forces and Moments on Ships Moored in a Current Volume 2 Phase 1 written by DANISH HYDRAULIC INST HOERSHOLM. and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments with 1:50-scale models produced data on the horizontal force and the yawing moment exerted by a steady current on ships moored in shallow water. Data were obtained for one ship with various headings and for two ships arranged side by side in a beam current. The models were restrained by elastic lines simulating real mooring; for a single ship, rigid support were also used. The experiments included brief investigations of the minimum flume width, turbulence, flow patterns, and flow-induced motions. Keywords: ship models; Water currents; Mooring; Loads(force); Motion; Model tests.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work consisted of an extensive series of experiments with ship models that were either fixed or moored in a current in shallow water. The experiments were designed to shed light on apparent contradictions in published data on the hydrodynamic force coefficients and to provide data for two ships moored side by side. The objectives of Phase I, which experiments with a single model, were to test the effect of the Reynolds number, define the effect of the width of the flume, and investigate the potential for ship motions in the shallow water. Phase II consisted of 116 experiments with one vessel and with two vessels side by side, using both fixed models and models restrained by elastic moorings. Phase II objectives were: 1) To determine the horizontal force components as functions of time and as time averages for one vessel and for two vessels in various positions and flow conditions. 2) To discover and define significant details of the flow around the ships(s) with the intent to further develop the understanding of the hydrodynamics of the actual situation. and 3) To investigate limiting conditions, which mark the transitions between negligible vessel motion and instability-type oscillations.

Book Twenty Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Twenty Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-03-02 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book Forces and Moments on Ships to be Moored at Diego Garcia

Download or read book Forces and Moments on Ships to be Moored at Diego Garcia written by TAGGART (ROBERT) INC FAIRFAX VA. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technique used to calculate wind forces and moments on a given ship is delineated in Chapter XII, Section 1 of the forthcoming book Ship Design and Construction . The pertinent material is reproduced in Appendix A of this report. Basically the abovewater area is divided into layers of equivalent area. A wind velocity profile is assumed wherein the velocity varies as the one-fifth power of the height above the surface of the water and the drag forces for a bow-on and for a beam-on wind are calculated. Multipliers, derived from past experience and model tests, are applied to these forces to derive the resultant forces and moments for winds acting at various angles from bow-on to stern-on. Current forces are also derived. The ships on which these calculations were made are the Maine Class Ro/Ro merchant ships (MarAd Designation C7-S-95a) and the Challenger II Class General Cargo Ships (MarAd Designation C4-S-64a).
