Book Investigation the Effect of Cationic Surfactant on Heat Transfer Performance in Heat Exchanger

Download or read book Investigation the Effect of Cationic Surfactant on Heat Transfer Performance in Heat Exchanger written by Abdul Haffizh Zulkifli and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drag reducing surfactant fluids are known to suffer from heat transfer capabilities in recirculating system. In this experiment, the main purpose is to investigate the effect of cationic surfactant flow parameter on heat transfer performance in heat exchanger. In the present research, Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was tested with concentration level of 500 ppm, 1000 ppm and 1500 ppm at 50oC, 60 oC and 70 oC temperature for each concentration level. The experimental result showed that, temperature and concentration effect the heat transfer performance of the CTAB surfactant. At concentration of 1500 ppm, highest heat transfer obtained at temperature of 50oC. The same results were obtained at temperature of 60oC and 70oC with corresponding concentration value of 500 ppm and 1000 ppm. The results also showed that the heat transfer rate with existing of UV light upon cationic surfactant flow enhance the heat transfer rate with 11% increase at 50°C with 1500 ppm, 6% increase at 60°C with 500 ppm and 5% increase at 70°C 1000.

Book Investigation of the Effects of Surfactant Concentration on the Boiling Curve of Water

Download or read book Investigation of the Effects of Surfactant Concentration on the Boiling Curve of Water written by Darci Janelle Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boiling is a widely used heat transfer process in industry that allows for high heat transfer with a small temperature gradient. In this study the effects of two homologous series of surfactants (trimethylammonium bromide (TAB) and methylglucamine (MEGA)) on the boiling curve of water were explored. Heat transfer vs. temperature plots were obtained for five surfactants for various concentrations under the cricical micelle concentration (CMC). Plots of temperature vs concentration for specific heat fluxes showed the lowering of the superheat that improves heat transfer when surfactants were added, resulting in an overall left shift of the boiling curve. The shifting that occurs at low concentrations of surfactant seem correlated with the diffusion coefficients of the different surfactants. The large shifting that occurs at larger concentrations is correlated with the hydrophobic tail length of each of the surfactants. This supports the hypothesis that the lowering of the dynamic surface tension, which correlates with the diffusion coefficient, is responsible for part of the lowering of the superheat. The fact that the larger shifting is correlated with the hydrophobic tail length supports the hypothesis that part of the shifting occurs due to the surfactants adsorbing onto the surface, making it more hydrophobic, increasing the contact angle, and decreasing the nucleation energy. The results of this work add to the understanding of the effects surfactants have on the boiling of water and give engineers more tools to adjust heat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent drag reduction by additives has long been a hot research topic. This phenomenon is inherently associated with multifold expertise. Solutions of drag-reducing additives are usually viscoelastic fluids having complicated rheological properties. Exploring the characteristics of drag-reduced turbulent flows calls for uniquely designed experimental and numerical simulation techniques and elaborate theoretical considerations. Pertinently understanding the turbulent drag reduction mechanism necessities mastering the fundamentals of turbulence and establishing a proper relationship between turbulence and the rheological properties induced by additives. Promoting the applications of the drag reduction phenomenon requires the knowledge from different fields such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, municipal engineering, and so on. This book gives a thorough elucidation of the turbulence characteristics and rheological behaviors, theories, special techniques and application issues for drag-reducing flows by surfactant additives based on the state-of-the-art of scientific research results through the latest experimental studies, numerical simulations and theoretical analyses. Covers turbulent drag reduction, heat transfer reduction, complex rheology and the real-world applications of drag reduction Introduces advanced testing techniques, such as PIV, LDA, and their applications in current experiments, illustrated with multiple diagrams and equations Real-world examples of the topic’s increasingly important industrial applications enable readers to implement cost- and energy-saving measures Explains the tools before presenting the research results, to give readers coverage of the subject from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints Consolidates interdisciplinary information on turbulent drag reduction by additives Turbulent Drag Reduction by Surfactant Additives is geared for researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Turbulence, Chemical Engineering, Municipal Engineering. Researchers and practitioners involved in the fields of Flow Control, Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Experimental Fluid Dynamics, and Rheology will also find this book to be a much-needed reference on the topic.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
