Book excerpt: The bulk carrier "Amazon" left Prince Rupert, B.C., for Vancouver, B.C., on September 13, 1985. At 0230 on September 14, 1985 , course altered to 127 degree (T). The fishing vessel "Devotion" left Ucluelet, B.C., on September 14, 1985. After having fished on La Perouse Bank until 1300, the vessel set course to 099 degree (T) for the eastern edge of Swiftsure Bank. Both vessels were on auto-pilot. At about 1629 the same day in clear weather, the "Devotion's" 14 metre long, port side, trolling pole, which was swung outboard at an angle of 45 degrees above the horizontal, came into contact with the starboard main deck bulwark rail of the "Amazon". The pole broke on contact, scratching the paintwork of the "Amazon". The "Devotion" recovered her broken gear and returned to Ucluelet for repairs. No human injury or pollution resulted from this casualty.

Book excerpt: During the evening of August 14, 1985, the fishing vessel "Shauna A" and the barge "Irving Sealion", which was under tow fo the tug "Irving Elm", collided approximately 9.25 miles southwest of Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia. The "Irving Sealion" was enroute to Searsport Maine, U.S.A., from Halifax, Nova Scotia; teh "Shauna A" was returning to her home port of Woods Harbour, Nova Scotia from the Georges Bank fishing grounds. Slight superstructural damage was sustained by the "Shauna A" ; there was no damage to the "Irving Sealion". Both vessels continued and completed their voyages. There were no injuries or pollution as a result of this incident.

Book excerpt: In the early morning of September 29, 1986, the small fishing vessel "Vivian O", when returning from the fishing grounds north of Sand Heads light at the mouth of the southern entrance to the Fraser River, was in collision with the loaded barge "Seaspan 610" which was in tow of the tug "Seaspan Valiant". All three vessels concerned were proceeding in the same general direction up the river. The fishing vessel "Vivian O" capsized, trapping her crew of two inside the accommodation where their bodies were subsequently found and recovered. The "Vivian O" was recovered and is considered a constructive total loss with an insured value of approximately $40,000.

Book excerpt: On the evening of June 21, 1985 the Taiwan registered freighter "Tai Shing" outbound from Vanouver, British Columbia, with a full cargo of grain on board, was in collision with the loaded gravel barge "Delta Queen" under tow of the Canadian tug "Storm Wave". The tug and unmaned barge were inbound to the Fraser River, North Arm when the collision ocurred approximately 2.6 nautical miles N.W. off Sandheads Light. It was dark at the time but visibility was good. After the collision the "Tai Shing" proceeded to Royal Roads near Victoria, B.C. where she anchored to conduct a damage inspection, while the tug and barged proceeded to the Fraser River for inspection. Both vessels suffered relatively minor damage. There was no pollution nor were there any injuries as a result of the collision.
