Download or read book Investigation Report Into the Circumstances Attending the Grounding and Stranding of the Canadian Coastal Cargo Vessel Topsail Star in Bay of Exploits Newfoundland on August 29 1986 written by Transportation Safety Board of Canada and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 0200, on August 29, 1986, while enroute to Bridgeport, Newfoundland, the "Topsail Star" grounded and became stranded on a rock shoal off Bridgeport Harbour entrance. Extensive damage was incurred to her hull bottom plating and internal double bottom structure with ingress of sea water to some double bottom tanks. At 1824, on September 1, having dishcharged all ballast, remaining cargo and part of her fuel oil, she was refloated with the aid of two other vessels and proceeded to St. John's Newfoundland, under her own power and without further incident. After dry docking at St. John's estimates of permanent repairs were given at between 200,000 and 300,000 dollars, which was in excess of the vessel's insured value. Temporary repairs were made enabling the vessel to complete here time-charter which ended during the first week of December 1986. There were no injuries or pollution as a result of this casuality.

Book Newfoundland in the North Atlantic World 1929 1949

Download or read book Newfoundland in the North Atlantic World 1929 1949 written by Peter Neary and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of three dozen interviews conducted with gay men ranging in age from 24 to 84 who grew up in the rural Midwest, uncovering a much neglected aspect of the gay experience. The stories are at times touching and also deeply disturbing as they reminisce about the rigid gender roles common to farming communities, social isolation, racism, religious conservatism, and little information to help them make sense of their identities. The other side of the coin is the deep and loving feelings these men have for the land, their families, communities, and churches. Told sometimes from urban exile, and sometimes from the middle of the field, all the interviews have a brave openness in common. Lacks an index. Book The War Against the Pirates

Download or read book The War Against the Pirates written by Barry Gough and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on hitherto unused sources in English and Spanish in British and American archives, in this book naval historian Barry Gough and legal authority Charles Borras investigate a secret Anglo-American coercive war against Spain, 1815-1835. Described as a war against piracy at the time, the authors explore how British and American interests – diplomatic and military – aligned to contain Spanish power to the critically influential islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico, facilitating the forging of an enduring but unproclaimed Anglo-American alliance which endures to this day. Due attention is given to United States Navy actions under Commodore David Porter, to this day a subject of controversy. More significantly though, through the juxtaposition of British, American and Spanish sources, this book uncovers the roots of piracy – and suppression– that laid the foundation for the tortured decline of the Spanish empire in the Americas and the subsequent rise of British and American empires, instrumental in stamping out Caribbean piracy for good.

Book The Voice of Newfoundland

Download or read book The Voice of Newfoundland written by Jeff Webb and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-11-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similar to the CBC and BBC, the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland was a public broadcaster that was at the centre of a cultural and political change from 1939 to 1949, during which Newfoundland faced wartime challenges and engaged in a constitutional debate about whether to become integrated into Canada. The Voice of Newfoundland studies these changes by taking a close look at the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland's radio programming and the responses of their listeners. Making excellent use of program recordings, scripts, and letters from listeners, as well as government and corporate archives, Jeff A. Webb examines several innovative programs that responded to the challenges of the Great Depression and Second World War. Webb explores the roles that radio played in society and culture during a vibrant and pivotal time in Newfoundland's history, and demonstrates how the broadcaster's decision to air political debates was pivotal in Newfoundlanders's decision to join Canada and to become part of North American consumer society. An engaging study rich in details of some of twentieth-century Newfoundland's most fascinating figures, The Voice of Newfoundland is a remarkable history of its politics and culture and an important analysis of the influence of the media and the participation of listeners.
