Book excerpt: The "Algosoo" was under repair during the winter lay-up in the Welland Canal entrance at Port Colborne. 'Hot work' repairs were in progress in the cargo self-unloading lower loop belt casing and transfer belt areas. During the lunch break, fire was discovered in the loop belt casing and the Port Colborne fire Department was called. They had problems fighting the fire due to heat and flames, difficulty of access and locked accommodation doors. Flooding the engine room with foam saved most fo the machinery, but severe damage was sustained in the self-loading machinery and after accommodation. Repairs have been estimated to be in the range of 9 to 10 million dollars. This is the second major fire in 18 months in the conveyor belt system of a Canadian self-unloading vessel.
