Book excerpt: During the morning of September 9, 1985, a fire broke out in the engine room of the Japanese fishing vessel "Daishin Maru N0.16" while she was secured alongside a fueling berth in St. John's, Newfoundland. Efforts to control the blaze by the vessel's crew and subsequently by the St. John's City Fire Department were unsuccessful. The "Daishin Maru No. 16" was towed out of the harbour and sank early the following morning. The vessel was a total loss. The casualty resulted in the death of one crewmember and in minor injuries to three other crewmembers. Several firemen required treatment for smoke inhalation and ammonia gas irritation. Some pollution was reported when the vessel sank, however, this was rapidly dissipated in the existing sea conditions.
