Book excerpt: - Discusses the most advanced techniques for diamond growth - Assists diamond researchers in deciding on the most suitable process conditions - Inspires readers to devise new CVD (chemical vapor deposition Ever since the early 1980s, and the discovery of the vapour growth methods of diamond film, heteroexpitaxial growth has become one of the most important and heavily discussed topics amongst the diamond research community. Kobashi has documented such discussions with a strong focus on how diamond films can be best utilised as an industrial material, working from the premise that crystal diamond films can be made by chemical vapour disposition. Kobashi provides information on the process and characterization technologies of oriented and heteroepitaxial growth of diamond films.

Book Non Classical Crystallization of Thin Films and Nanostructures in CVD and PVD Processes

Download or read book Non Classical Crystallization of Thin Films and Nanostructures in CVD and PVD Processes written by Nong Moon Hwang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to a recently-developed approach to the growth mechanism of thin films and nanostructures via chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Starting from the underlying principles of the low pressure synthesis of diamond films, it is shown that diamond growth occurs not by individual atoms but by charged nanoparticles. This newly-discovered growth mechanism turns out to be general to many CVD and some physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes. This non-classical crystallization is a new paradigm of crystal growth, with active research taking place on growth in solution, especially in biomineralization processes. Established understanding of the growth of thin films and nanostructures is based around processes involving individual atoms or molecules. According to the author’s research over the last two decades, however, the generation of charged gas phase nuclei is shown to be the rule rather than the exception in the CVD process, and charged gas phase nuclei are actively involved in the growth of films or nanostructures. This new understanding is called the theory of charged nanoparticles (TCN). This book describes how the non-classical crystallization mechanism can be applied to the growth of thin films and nanostructures in gas phase synthesis. Based on the author’s graduate lecture course, the book is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in the field of thin film and nanostructure growth or crystal growth. It is hoped that a new understanding of the growth processes of thin films and nanostructures will reduce trial-and-error in research and in industrial fabrication processes.

Book Fundamental Studies of the Chemical Vapor Deposition of Diamond

Download or read book Fundamental Studies of the Chemical Vapor Deposition of Diamond written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plasma or thermally enhanced low pressure chemical vapor deposition of diamond films is an exciting development with many challenging fundamental problems. The early stages of nucleation is relevant to the initial growth rate and the perfection and morphology of the deposit. To isolate one of the factors that influence nucleation, we have studied the effect of surface topography on the nucleation process. Our earlier work has shown preferential nucleation on sharp convex features and we have proposed several possible reasons for this behavior, including dangling bonds at the convex features. In our recent work, we have extended our investigation to include a novel patterning of silicon substrates used to pattern silicon solar cells. The results are consistent with our earlier observations that the majority of nucleation events occur on protruding surface features. In an effort to establish whether dangling bonds at the protruding surfaces may be responsible for the selective nucleation, we have evaluated the dangling bond concentration using electron spin resonance. We have carried out deposition under nominally identical surface topography, but with different concentrations of dangling bonds at or near the surface. The results of this study indicate that dangling bonds play a minor role in enhancing nucleation, in contrast to a substantial role played by special surface topographical features. In the course of the past year, we have submitted four manuscripts for publication and have made six presentations.

Book Diamond Thin Films An Emerging Technology Past Present and Future

Download or read book Diamond Thin Films An Emerging Technology Past Present and Future written by Ashok Kumar Dua and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2004-08-08 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diamond, as well as being a precious gem, is a versatile material par excellence. No other material comes anywhere near to matching its properties, which are both extreme, and also expressed in rare combinations. However, natural diamonds, and those synthesised under high sandpressure temperatures, are too expensive or small for many technological applications. These limitations can be overcome by using large-area diamond coatings; chemically bonded to inexpensive non-diamond surfaces. The consequent economic advantages provide the driving force for much diamond-related research and technology.

Book Nucleation and Growth of Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposited Diamond Film

Download or read book Nucleation and Growth of Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposited Diamond Film written by Inderjeet Kaur and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleation density and the growth rates were monitor using scanning electron micrographs. It was discovered that nucleation was both dense and fast on the diamond scratched silicon surface. On the other hand, on the untreated silicon surface nucleation was both sparse and slow. The SiC scratched surface gave a slight enhancement in nucleation density over the untreated surface. A complete results of the study will be presented together with a detailed discussion of the possible mechanisms involved in the nucleation behavior of diamond on silicon surfaces.
