Book Investigation of the Effect of Large Core Changes in Toroidal Plasma Rotation and Radial Electric Field on Confinement in H mode Discharges in the DIII D Tokamak

Download or read book Investigation of the Effect of Large Core Changes in Toroidal Plasma Rotation and Radial Electric Field on Confinement in H mode Discharges in the DIII D Tokamak written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plasma toroidal rotation and the radial electric field in the core ([rho]{approx lt}0.9) of H-mode discharges in DIII-D are greatly altered by the drag produced by application of static, resonant magnetic field perturbations from an external coil (the n = 1 coil''). Transport loss due to turbulent fluctuations can in theory be reduced by E{sub r} shear stabilization or suppression. This is tested experimentally in DIII-D by using the magnetic breaking'' of rotation (with concomitant change in E{sub r}) as an independent control. The magnetic braking produces reversal of the core radial electric field, E{sub r}, and E{sub r} shear. However, the plasma maintains a negative edge ([rho]{approx lt}0.95) E{sub r} and E{sub r} shear and remains in H-mode with insignificant changes in global confinement, density profile and temperature profiles. The H-mode confinement is remarkably robust to the increasing error fields and the slowed toroidal rotation up to the onset of a locked mode which induces a transition to L-mode, the virtual cessation of plasma rotation and large reconnected islands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of a vast and clean source of thermal power drove physics research for over fifty years and has finally come to collimation with the international consortium led by the European Union and Japan, with an agreement from seven countries to build a definitive test of fusion power in ITER. It happened because scientists since the Manhattan project have envisioned controlled nuclear fusion in obtaining energy with no carbon dioxide emissions and no toxic nuclear waste products. This large toroidal magnetic confinement ITER machine is described from confinement process to advanced physics of plasma-wall interactions, where pulses erupt from core plasma blistering the machine walls. Emissions from the walls reduce the core temperature which must remain ten times hotter than the 15 million degree core solar temperature to maintain ITER fusion power. The huge temperature gradient from core to wall that drives intense plasma turbulence is described in detail. Also explained are the methods designed to limit the growth of small magnetic islands, the growth of edge localized plasma plumes and the solid state physics limits of the stainless steel walls of the confinement vessel from the burning plasma. Designs of the wall coatings and the special 'exhaust pipe' for spent hot plasma are provided in two chapters. And the issues associated with high-energy neutrons — about 10 times higher than in fission reactions — and how they are managed in ITER, are detailed.

Book Toroidal Rotation and Core Ion Confinement with RF Heating in DIII D

Download or read book Toroidal Rotation and Core Ion Confinement with RF Heating in DIII D written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shear in the E x B flow velocity can stabilize turbulent transport[1], and so it is of interest to understand the physics behind electric field generation and modification in the tokamak. In DIII-D the core radial electric field in many regimes is generated by flow velocities driven by momentum input from neutral beam injection (NBI). In a variety of conditions it is observed that direct electron heating is accompanied by a reduction in the NBI driven toroidal rotation velocity, U[sub[phi]], and the ion temperature, T[sub i], primarily in the core, [rho]

Book Observations of Toroidal Rotation Suppression with ITB Formation in ICRF and Ohmic H mode Alcator C Mod Plasmas

Download or read book Observations of Toroidal Rotation Suppression with ITB Formation in ICRF and Ohmic H mode Alcator C Mod Plasmas written by John E. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-current central toroidal rotation has been observed in Alcator C-Mod plasmas with on-axis ICRF heating. The rotation velocity increases with plasma stored energy and decreases with plasma current. Very similar behavior has been seen during Ohmic H-modes, which suggests that the rotation, generated in the absence of an external momentum source, is not principally an ICRF effect. A scan of the ICRF resonance location across the plasma has been performed in order to investigate possible influences on the toroidal rotation. With a slight reduction of the toroidal magnetic field from 4.7 to 4.5 T and a corresponding shift of the ICRF resonance from r/a = -0.36 to -0.48, the central toroidal rotation significantly decreased in concert with the formation of an internal transport barrier (ITB). During the ITB period, the electrons and impurities peaked continuously for . Comparison of the observed rotation and neo-classical predictions indicates that the core radial electric field changes from positive to negative during the ITB phase. Similar rotation suppression and ITB formation have been observed during some Ohmic H-mode discharges.

Book H mode and VH mode Confinement Improvement in DIII D Investigations of Turbulence Local Transport and Active Control of the Shear in the E times B Flow

Download or read book H mode and VH mode Confinement Improvement in DIII D Investigations of Turbulence Local Transport and Active Control of the Shear in the E times B Flow written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypothesis of stabilization of turbulence by shear in the E[times] B drift speed successfully predicts the observed turbulence reduction and confinement improvement seen at the L to H transition. This same hypothesis is the best explanation to date for the further confinement improvement seen in the plasma core when the plasma goes from H-mode to VH-mode. Consequently, the most fundamental question for H-mode studies now is: how is the electric field E[sub r] formed? The radial force balance equation relates E[sub r] to the main ion pressure gradient[triangledown]P[sub i], poloidal rotation[nu][sub[theta]i], and toroidal rotation[nu][sub[phi]i]. In the plasma edge, direct measurements show[triangledown]P[sub i] and[nu][sub[theta]i] are the important terms at the L to H transition, with[triangledown]P[sub i] being the dominant, negative term throughout most of the H-mode. Since E[sub r] is observed to change prior to the change in[triangledown]P[sub i], the authors infer that main ion rotation, probably[nu][sub[theta]i], changes first, triggering the transition. E[sub r] is seen to change prior to the change in fluctuations, consistent with E[times] B shear causing the change in fluctuations and transport. In the plasma core, E[sub r] is primarily related to[nu][sub[phi]i]. There is a clear temporal and spatial correlation between the change in E[times] B shear and the region of local confinement improvement when the plasma goes from H-mode to VH-mode. Direct manipulation of[nu][sub[phi]i] and E[times] B shear using the drag produced by a non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbation has produced clear changes in local transport consistent with the E[times] B shear stabilization hypothesis. The implications of these results for theories of the L to H and H to VH transitions will be discussed. 83 refs., 5 figs.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Core plasma rotation of both L-mode and H-mode discharges with ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) minority heating (MH) scheme was measured with a tangential X-ray imaging crystal spectrometer on EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak). Co-current central impurity toroidal rotation change was observed in ICRF-heated L- and H-mode plasmas. Rotation increment as high as 30 km/s was generated at ∼1.7 MW ICRF power. Scaling results showed similar trend as the Rice scaling but with significant scattering, especially in L-mode plasmas. We varied the plasma current, toroidal field and magnetic configuration individually to study their effect on L-mode plasma rotation, while keeping the other major plasma parameters and heating unchanged during the scanning. It was found that larger plasma current could induce plasma rotation more efficiently. A scan of the toroidal magnetic field indicated that the largest rotation was obtained for on-axis ICRF heating. A comparison between lower-single-null (LSN) and double-null (DN) configurations showed that LSN discharges rendered a larger rotation change for the same power input and plasma parameters.
