Book excerpt: Pumping tests, chemical and biological analyses of water samples, and well screen inspection by means of a borehole TV camera were conducted in 1969 as part of a study of the efficiency of the relief well system along the Mississippi River between Alton and Gale, Illinois. The purposes of this study are to determine the extent and causes of well deterioration and to investigate methods for improving and maintaining the efficiency of the well system. The relief wells were designed by personnel of the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station and built under the supervision of the U.S. Army Engineering District, St. Louis (SLD). The wells included in this investigation were installed between 1953 and 1955. Since then, SLD has performed a series of well pumping tests, periodically inspected the relief well system, and observed the operation of the wells during high river stages of the Mississippi River. Book excerpt: "The computer program, MODFLOW, was used to simulate the performance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - St. Louis District levee system from Alton to Gale, Illinois. The gravel pack hydraulic conductivity of these relief wells was found to decrease at an average rate of 0.375 feet per second/feet per second/year. This rate was based on the assumption that the initial hydraulic conductivity of the gravel pack was 1.6 x 10−4 feet per second. An equation was developed to convert specific capacity (data obtained during a pumping test) to specific flow (data obtained during a high-water event). A procedure was developed to predict flow within the levee system during high-water events. Two types of analysis can be applied to the procedure. A present-day analysis predicts the efficiency of a relief well in its current, existing condition. A future-date analysis predicts the efficiency of a relief well at some future time. The results of either analysis could be used to predict pore pressures and uplift gradients within the levee system"--Abstract, leaf iv
