Book Aircraft Maneuvers for the Evaluation of Flying Qualities and Agility

Download or read book Aircraft Maneuvers for the Evaluation of Flying Qualities and Agility written by David J. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of aircraft maneuvers has been developed to augment evaluation maneuvers used currently by the flying qualities and flight test communities. These maneuvers extend evaluation to full aircraft dynamics throughout the aircraft flight envelope. As a result, a tie has been established between operational use and design parameters without losing control of the aircraft evaluation process. Twenty maneuvers are described as an initial set to examine primarily high-angle-of-attack conditions. Perhaps as important as the maneuvers themselves is the method used to select them. These maneuvers will allow direct measurement of flying qualities throughout the flight envelope instead of merely comparing parameters to specification values. Aircraft Maneuvers, Flight test, Flying qualities, Agility.

Book Flying beyond the stall

Download or read book Flying beyond the stall written by Douglas A. Joyce and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Book High Angle of Attack Aerodynamics

Download or read book High Angle of Attack Aerodynamics written by Josef Rom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamics of aircraft at high angles of attack is a subject which is being pursued diligently, because the modern agile fighter aircraft and many of the current generation of missiles must perform well at very high incidence, near and beyond stall. However, a comprehensive presentation of the methods and results applicable to the studies of the complex aerodynamics at high angle of attack has not been covered in monographs or textbooks. This book is not the usual textbook in that it goes beyond just presenting the basic theoretical and experimental know-how, since it contains reference material to practical calculation methods and technical and experimental results which can be useful to the practicing aerospace engineers and scientists. It can certainly be used as a text and reference book for graduate courses on subjects related to high angles of attack aerodynamics and for topics related to three-dimensional separation in viscous flow courses. In addition, the book is addressed to the aerodynamicist interested in a comprehensive reference to methods of analysis and computations of high angle of attack flow phenomena and is written for the aerospace scientist and engineer who is familiar with the basic concepts of viscous and inviscid flows and with computational methods used in fluid dynamics.

Book Design Criteria for the Future of Flight Controls

Download or read book Design Criteria for the Future of Flight Controls written by S. G. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings are reported of a symposium held in Dayton, sponsored by the Flight Dynamics Laboratory during 2-5 March 1982. The symposium was planned and ran by the Flight Control Division, specifically the Flying Qualities Group and the Control Techniques Group as part of an ongoing effort to revise and upgrade both MIL-F-8785C, Military Specification, Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes, and MIL-F-9490D, Flight Control System-Design, Installation and Test of Piloted Aircraft, General Specification For. Specialists from both the flying qualities and flight control system disciplines were gathered in Dayton from both industry and government agencies. Formal and informal presentations, plus workshop discussions, were structured around proposed draft versions of the new Flying Qualities MIL-Standard and Handbook and the new Flight Control Systems MIL-Specification and Handbook. This report contains a record of the presentations and discussions as submitted by the individual authors.
