Book Investigation of Ferroelectric Domain Structure and Nonlinear Optical Properties in Barium Titanate Epitaxial Thin Films

Download or read book Investigation of Ferroelectric Domain Structure and Nonlinear Optical Properties in Barium Titanate Epitaxial Thin Films written by David J. Towner and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ferroelectric material barium titanate exhibits exceptional electro-optic and dielectric properties, making it desirable for electro-optic applications, especially in thin film form. The effective nonlinear optical and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 films are determined by the ferroelectric domain structure. The ferroelectric domain structures of epitaxial BaTiO3 films on MgO (100) substrates were investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electro-optic properties of epitaxial BaTiO3 and KTa xNb1-xO3 thin films were investigated to determine their utility as the active medium in electro-optic (EO) devices. The relationship between the EO properties, both static and dynamic, and the ferroelectric (FE) domain structure of the films was determined. A theoretical model was developed to describe the magnitude and dynamic response of the EO effect and dielectric properties of multidomain FE films. The effective linear EO coefficient of each film, reff, was modeled as a linear superposition of the EO response of each FE domain variant, and the dynamic EO response was described in terms of a statistical distribution of domain relaxation times.

Book Ferroelectrics Literature Index

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the nano metric resolution of atomic force microscopy techniques, this work explores the rich fundamental physics and novel functionalities of domain walls in ferroelectric materials, the nano scale interfaces separating regions of differently oriented spontaneous polarization. Due to the local symmetry-breaking caused by the change in polarization, domain walls are found to possess an unexpected lateral piezoelectric response, even when this is symmetry-forbidden in the parent material. This has interesting potential applications in electromechanical devices based on ferroelectric domain patterning. Moreover, electrical conduction is shown to arise at domain walls in otherwise insulating lead zirconate titanate, the first such observation outside of multiferroic bismuth ferrite, due to the tendency of the walls to localize defects. The role of defects is then explored in the theoretical framework of disordered elastic interfaces possessing a characteristic roughness scaling and complex dynamic response. It is shown that the heterogeneous disorder landscape in ferroelectric thin films leads to a breakdown of the usual self-affine roughness, possibly related to strong pinning at individual defects. Finally, the roles of varying environmental conditions and defect densities in domain switching are explored and shown to be adequately modelled as a competition between screening effects and pinning.

Book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity

Download or read book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a joint effort of the Research Materials Information Center (RMIC) of the Solid State Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Libraries and Information Systems Center at Bell Telephone Laboratories (BTL) Murray Hill, N. J. The Research Materials Information Center has, since 1963, been answering inquiries on the avail ability, preparation, and properties of inorganic solid-state research materials. The preparation of bibliographies has been essential to this function, and the interest in ferroelectrics led to the compila tion of the journal and report literature on that subject. The 1962 book Ferroelectric Crystals, by Jona and Shirane, was taken as a cutoff point, and all papers through mid-1969 received by the Center have been included. The Libraries and Information Systems Center of BTL has, over a period of years, developed a proprie tary package of computer programs called BELDEX, which formats and generates indexes to biblio graphic material. This group therefore undertook to process RMIC's ferroelectric references by BELDEX so that both laboratories could have the benefit of an indexed basic bibliography in this important research area.

Book Microstructure and Superlattice Effects on the Optical Properties of Ferroelectric Thin Films

Download or read book Microstructure and Superlattice Effects on the Optical Properties of Ferroelectric Thin Films written by Jussi Hiltunen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the microstructure effects on the optical properties of (i) polycrystalline Nd-modified lead-zirkonium-titanate (PNZT) and (ii) highly oriented BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films together with the stacking structure influence on the optical properties of (iii) BaTiO3-SrTiO3 (STO) superlattice thin films. All the films were grown on MgO(001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Different structures were obtained by tuning the thin film processing conditions. PNZT thin films were deposited at room temperature and different crystallite size distributions were produced by varying the post-annealing temperature. The refractive index and electro-optic responses were found to increase with increasing mean crystallite size. Oxygen pressure during the film deposition at 700 °C was found to be a very critical parameter to modify the crystallographic and consequent other physical properties of BTO thin films as suggested by the dielectric and optical measurements. Low oxygen pressure films were epitaxial, with elongated lattice parameters along the surface normal, while increased working oxygen pressure produced non-epitaxial films with lattice elongation along the in-plane orientation. An effective electro-optic coefficient of ~21 pm/V was measured for the BTO films. Periodic BTO-STO superlattices were deposited with varying stacking periodicity between 27 and 1670 A. Birefringence decreased with increasing stacking periodicity, due to relaxation of the lattice strain induced by the layer interfaces. The electro-optic response was found to reach a maximum at a specific stacking periodicity and it decreases with both increasing and decreasing individual layer thickness. The operation of a Mach-Zehnder waveguide intensity modulator based on the BTO-STO superlattice with effective electro-optic coefficient of 73 pm/V was also demonstrated.

Book Structure and Transport Properties of Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films

Download or read book Structure and Transport Properties of Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films written by Junsoo Shin and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epitaxial thin films and heterostructures based on perovskite oxides have attracted significant attention in physics since perovskites exhibit an enormous range of electrical, magnetic, and optical properties, making them exciting systems for studies of the fundamental physical mechanisms of interactions between electron, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom. This dissertation has been focused on ferroelectricity in low-dimensional ferroelectric materials using ultra-thin ferroelectric epitaxial films (BaTiO3) with a metallic electrode (SrRuO3) by studying polarized ordering of the crystal structure and electronic transport through the films. High quality and highly oxidized epitaxial films are a prerequisite for the clear observation of physical properties such as ferroelectricity which depends on a sensitive balance of lattice structure, dynamics, and charge distribution. Measurements in low dimensional, ultra-thin films require a controlled surface status through in-situ characterization. As is demonstrated here, fundamental physical phenomena on surfaces and in ultra-thin films are easily modified due to reactivity in ambient air, even for oxide materials generally considered inert. This study is centered on in-situ low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy of BaTiO3 films grown on SrRuO3 electrodes on a SrTiO3 substrate. Results show out-of-plane polarized structure and polarization switching, which provide evidence of ferroelectricity in films down to 4 ML. Surface reconstruction in 1-2 ML thick BaTiO3 films is seriously affected by the interface between BaTiO3 films and SrRuO3 bottom electrode. Our observation in epitaxial BaTiO3 films indicates the existence of ferroelectricity with a lower limit (4 ML) for the minimum thickness than theoretical expectation (6 ML), which results from the difference of film stress, termination on films, and depolarizing screening.
