Book Investigation of Exposure Based Pedestrian Accident Areas

Download or read book Investigation of Exposure Based Pedestrian Accident Areas written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous FHWA research on pedestrian exposure identified four problem areas as promising candidates for accident reduction: intersections without marked pedestrian crosswalks, major arterial streets, local streets, and locations lacking sidewalks or pedestrian pathways. This report describes the results of a project undertaken to examine those four problem areas. The objectives of the project were to: evaluate past research on pedestrian crosswalk markings and develop guidance for when and what type of crosswalk markings should be provided; investigate traffic engineering improvements for major arterial streets to increase pedestrian safety; investigate traffic engineering improvements for local streets to increase pedestrian safety; and examine existing guidance/warrants for the provision of pedestrian pathways and sidewalks and prepare revised guidance/warrants.

Book Pedestrian Accidents in Arizona

Download or read book Pedestrian Accidents in Arizona written by Judson S. Matthias and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigated the causes of pedestrian accidents in Arizona to discover why Arizona's pedestrian accident rate is higher than the national average. All pedestrian accidents for 1981, 1982, and 1983 that were computerized in the state accident report system were examined. All acccidents (37,784) that could be located *2.6% could not be located) were plotted by location and reported cause. Accident rates for urban areas were higher than for rural areas. The only identified pattern was that urban accidents and fatalities tend to occur on wide, high speed arterial streets. Causes of approximately 50% of all accidents were failure to yield by motorist or pedestrian and not using a crosswalk. It was concluded that there are no engineering countermeasures that would be useful. Education of the public, particularly children under 14 years of age seems to be the only useful countermeasure. Arizona is heavily urbanized with very little rural population to offset the larger than average rate. The Indian reservations are similar to the rural counties and do not contribute to the high rate, although the rate of Indian reservations is higher than that of rural counties. Volume I contains the text and summary figures relevant to the discussion of the results of the research. Volume II, 113 pages, contains the appendices.

Book Pedestrians and Traffic control Measures

Download or read book Pedestrians and Traffic control Measures written by Charles V. Zegeer and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, safety engineers, and others concerned with pedestrian safety. Information is presented on the traffic-control measures being used by states and local agencies to enhance pedestrian safety. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of all highway fatalities are pedestrians, and although most pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas, all agencies should pay more attention to the needs of pedestrians. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes and discusses more than 20 traffic-control measures and their effects on pedestrian safety, including the advantages and disadvantages of each and the conditions under which each is most and least likely to be of benefit.
