Book Investigation of a Hypersonic Flow of Slightly Rarefied Viscous Gas Around a Flat Plate

Download or read book Investigation of a Hypersonic Flow of Slightly Rarefied Viscous Gas Around a Flat Plate written by V. S. Galkin and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculation of drag coefficient of a flat semi-infinite heat-insulated plate in a hypersonic gas flow with slip is described. It is assumed that the region of flow between joined strong jumps of the packing and the plate consists of a non-viscous zone and laminar boundary layer. The strong interaction of the jump with the layer is considered. In calculation of the boundary layer the integral form of equation of pulses with linear profile of speed is used and taking into account the speed of slip. Parameters of flow on the external boundary of the boundary layer are calculated by the method of tangential wedges.

Book Numerical Study of Rarefied Hypersonic Flow Interacting with a Continuum Jet

Download or read book Numerical Study of Rarefied Hypersonic Flow Interacting with a Continuum Jet written by Christopher E. Glass and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An uncoupled CFD-DSMC technique is developed and applied to provide solutions for continuum jets interacting with rarefield external flows. The technique is based on a correlation of the appropriate Bird breakdown parameter for a transitional-rarefield condition that defines a surface within which the continuum solution is unaffected by the external flow-jet interaction. The method is applied to two problems to assess and demonstrate its validity: one of a jet interaction in the transitional-rarefied flow regime and the other in the moderately rarefield regime. Results show that the appropriate Bird breakdown surface for uncoupling the continuum and non-continuum solutions is a function of a non-dimensional parameter relating the momentum flux and collisionality between the two interacting flows.

Book Research on Nonisentropic Gas Dynamics

Download or read book Research on Nonisentropic Gas Dynamics written by Robert J. Vidal and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four problems that were investigated are (1) the development of a probe to measure molecular speed ratio and its application in nozzle flows and free-jet expansions, (2) surface measurements (heat transfer, skin friction, and surface pressure) on a sharp flat plate and on wedges in hypersonic flows in the transition from free-molecule to continuum flow, (3) pseudo-transpiration at an orifice and its effect on measured pressures, and (4) studies using speed-ratio probes to determine the structure of the viscous shock layer on a sharp flat plate. The report summarizes the results of those investigations.

Book An Experimental Model for the Sharp Leading Edge Problem in Rarefied Hypersonic Flow

Download or read book An Experimental Model for the Sharp Leading Edge Problem in Rarefied Hypersonic Flow written by W. J. McCroskey and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow field studies of the shock wave and boundary layer development on a sharp flat plate are presented for a region of rarefied flow that bridges the gap between a classical hypersonic boundary layer downstream and a kinetic flow model at the leading edge. The measurements give a comprehensive picture of the flow pattern in the 'merged layer' or 'viscous layer' regime, which exists upstream of the region of validity of hypersonic viscous interaction theory. The results are derived from a combination of several probing and optical techniques and surface pressure measurements. From the detailed measurements, a true scale physical model of the flow field is constructed for the merged layer regime. One of the main features of the model is a thick, curved shock wave which decreases in strength as the leading edge is approached, even though the shock angle increases. Density profiles across the shock and viscous layers show that the structure of the flow field is quite different from the classical picture of a hypersonic boundary layer beneath an oblique Rankine-Hugonio shock wave. Book Surface Measurements on Sharp Flat Plates and Wedges in Low density Hypersonic Flow

Download or read book Surface Measurements on Sharp Flat Plates and Wedges in Low density Hypersonic Flow written by Robert J. Vidal and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of surface pressure, skin friction, and heat transfer are presented for sharp flat plates at zero angle of attack and at large and small wedge angles in a hypersonic flow. These data largely span the transition from continuum to near-free-molecule flow. The magnitude of slip velocity and energy jump at the surface are inferred from the data. The inferred slip velocity compares favorably with independent measurements by other investigators of slip velocity obtained with pitot probes. The data are compared with relevant theories ranging from the continuum to the free-molecule flow regimes and are used to check the validity of Reynolds analogy. The flat plate data at zero angle of attack are in good agreement with continuum theory when the appropriate Chapman-Rubesin constant is used, and the data are in reasonable agreement with available theories in the viscous layer regime. Heat transfer data are presented which completely define the transition to the free-molecule limit. The data obtained at large wedge angles agree reasonably with viscous shock layer theory which spans the transition from continuum to near-free-molecule flow. Discrepancies appear to be traceable to assumptions in the theory regarding Prandtl number, the Chapman-Rubesin constant, and boundary-layer displacement effects. Data obtained at small wedge angles compare favorably with theory in the continuum limit. Low-density departures of pressure from continuum theory are predicted reasonably by a momentum integral theory. Author).

Book Introduction to Hypersonic Flow

Download or read book Introduction to Hypersonic Flow written by G. G. Chernyi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Hypersonic Flow has been made available to the English speaking reader because of its usefulness for those individuals desirous of obtaining an introduction to the subject. Written by an internationally acknowledged expert in the field of hypersonic flow, the book makes available heretofore unpublished Soviet work, as well as published work little known outside the Soviet Union. The author has however made every effort to include, where appropriate. Western references for the work he discusses. Starting with a general introductory chapter on hypersonic aerodynamics and aerodynamic problems, the remainder of the book concentrates on the inviscid, perfect fluid aspects of hypersonic flow, with emphasis on the fundamental concepts and rational methods of calculation. The book is directed to students of aerodynamics and gas dynamics, as well as to scientists and engineers interested in problems of hypersonic flight. The level of approach is such that it should prove particularly useful as an undergraduate and introductory graduate text.
